H O K A R O U N D T H E W O R L DMany of our clients are expanding around the world. These companies need global solutions and local delivery.
Many years ago we recognized that serv-ing these clients requires having people on the ground in locations where companies need work environments. We are constantly
expanding our capabilities in Europe, Asia-Pacifi c, and Latin America. Today, about 700 HOK people – nearly one-third of our staff – reside in offi ces outside the U.S.
We shape our international offi ces into local practices, led and staffed by professionals who speak the native language and who know the culture and customs.

“The building is very successful in achieving what we wanted and what it actually delivers. The elements that we had hoped for: a collaborative environment, interaction between research teams, views of laboratories from offices and other labs, access to daylight – are all there. This is one of the best designed labs that I have ever seen.” - Keld Sorensen, Director Research and Development, Sigma-Aldrich

Moving the design of science
environments forward is a
driving force of the HOK
Science + Technology group.
Thought leadership, conveyed
by speaking at and leading
conferences/seminars,
publishing articles, and
collecting benchmark data on
lab design, construction, costs
and trends, enables HOK to

HOK has grown up with the pharmaceutical industry. We’ve been planning and
designing places for people in
research organizations since
1968, when we began work on
Bristol-Myers Squibb’s landmark
campus in New Jersey.
Pharmaceutical industry trends
continue to affect facility
needs. With R&D costs rising—
companies are looking for ways to:
• Increase productivity and cut
real estate and facilities costs
• Build modular, fl exible labs
to accommodate changes in
research programs
• Maximize opportunities for
interaction across multiple
disciplines under one roof
PARTNERSHIPS
Partnerships between pharma and
biotech companies, as well as with
academia, require collaborative
workplaces to streamline the
discovery process and help
companies deliver products to the
market faster and cheaper.
PLANNING
No matter the size, culture,
and space requirements,
pharmaceutical companies
share a need for thoughtfully
designed research environments
that are scalable and fl exible to
accommodate changes in the way
they do business.
CONSOLIDATION
Consolidation is shaping the
industry and it creates new real
estate and facility challenges as
pressure increases to strike the
right balance between assets,
facilities and workforce.

Utilizing the third floor space of
an existing speculative office
building, HOK designed lab
and office space to support
Genzyme’s 24-7 genetic disease
testing services for hospitals
and research centers.
Significant sustainable design
strategies included daylighting,
variable air flow fume hoods,
energy star appliances and lab
equipment where available, and
a heat recovery system.

HOK’s challenge was to
create a wholly new kind of
research community, one that
would sustain innovation and
exploration while eschewing
conventional thinking.
Integral to the design was the
concept of the “work-home”
environment; essential to
creating an atmosphere to
sustain the core company values
of innovation and commitment
to the community. hok .com
