Junior Prizegiving 2019 My thanks to all the parents, family members and community supporters who packed out our school hall for the Junior Prizegiving on Friday 6th December.

Congratulations to all those receiving certificates, trophies and prizes and special note of our top Aca-demic Year 9 Student - Newrea Yong and our top Academic Year 10 Students – Millie Thompson.

Mobile Phone Rules 2020 After consulting with the community and staff, the Board of Trustees has approved new school rules restricting the use of mobile phones in the school from the start of the 2020 school year. The following poster information which will be up in classrooms, outlines the new rules and processes.

School Rules Phones are not be on or used by students between the first bell at 8.40am and the last bell of the day at 3.10pm. This includes class time, admin time, assemblies, interval and lunchtime.

Earphones are not be worn at any of the above restricted times unless approved by a teacher for class use. They may only be connected to a school approved device eg BYOD Device or School Computer.

If students do carry phones concealed in their bags or clothing, then they must be switched off. We will be also be targeting wrist-watch phones with texting functions and blue tooth ear-pieces that may be linking to phones.

Parents Contacting Students In emergencies please contact the school office on 09 2358139. We will pass on the message. For other calls we ask that you limit these to before and after school to student phones. Students who wish to contact parents during the day can ask for permission from their dean or the school office.

School Values and Strategic Goals During 2019 we consulted widely about our school values and the Board has endorsed the following new set of values, some of which I spoke about at the Junior Prizegiving.

Whanaungatanga - relationships, responsibility

Whakaute - pride, respect and appreciation

Kaitiakitanga - guardianship, safety, care and sustainability

As a result of these changes in our values we have amended one of our strategic goals to reflect a greater commitment to sustain-ability in the school and we intend to review and amend our Waiuku Way guidelines for students in the new year as well.

Property Grant We were pleased to receive notification that the college will receive a $400,000 property top up grant from the government. This will hopefully allow us to fast track the modernization projects for our Technology and Art blocks. It cannot be used for new buildings.

MOE Donations Scheme The college will no longer ask parents to make a $150 donation towards school running costs. This new scheme also limits us from asking for subject costs on food related subjects, so this will mean a significant saving for parents of students choosing those subjects. There will still be subject fees where there is a take-home component such as an art supplies pack or materials for technology projects that students keep. Camps and trips will still carry costs but these are all ‘recommended activities’ and not compulsory.

School Magazine We will continue to publish an annual school magazine and include the optional charge of $20 on our school invoices to cover the costs associated with its publication.

Uniform Sales – The Warehouse Pukekohe From the end of this week uniform sales will only be available from the Warehouse in Pukekohe. We will be holding some stock of Year 13 white polos and sleeveless uniform burgundy vests.

YEAR 10 CAMP

Year 10 campers had a great time of sun and activities up the peninsula at the Awhitu Camp last week.

Students were involved in paddle boarding, tramping, wood turning, fishing, raft building and team challenges.

A teacher even made up a cardboard dummy phone for one wee cherub who had phone separation anxiety! Roll on 2020.

DONATION Thank you to the Class of 62 College Third Form who donated $100 to the student hardship fund. Our DP, Gowan Ditchburn gave them a conducted tour of the College and they had a great time reminiscing their school days of 57 years ago.

STUDENTS CAN TOP UP THEIR NCEA CREDITS Study online with Te Kura Summer School

Don’t let a few missing credits get in the way of your students’ future. Te Kura (The Correspondence School) accepts short-term enrolments over the summer break for students to earn additional credits or specific internal standards in NCEA.

Courses are delivered online, so with access to a computer and the internet, students can learn anywhere and anytime.

Equestrian cup teams event. The girls competed at the Papatoetoe pony club. All riders placing in every one of their events.

Scarlet Byrne placed 1st and 5th in show jumping. Paris McDonell Murdie 4th and 5th in show hunter. Shaylin Homes 2nd and 5th in show hunter. Leah Kelly 2nd and 3rd in show-jumping.

They then went on to win the event overall receiving a trophy, sashes, $100 each towards lessons, and a rug for their horses. Congratulations girls!

A big thank you goes to Mr Kew for organising the team and supporting them on the day.

10RG VISIT TO ESTUARY VILLAGE On Tuesday our form class 10RG took a trip to the Estuary Village Retirement home as part of our Take Action project for health. We decided that visiting the residents at the Estuary Village would be the perfect way to express our thanks and to give back to the community that has raised us.

We had home-baked morning tea for the residents to enjoy and played games like Pass the Parcel, quizzes and more. We had also organised Carollers from the music department to perform in light of Christmas. Before we left, we gave the residents a special Christmas card and present, leaving them with huge smiles and some teary eyes.

Our class is so proud of our choice to visit the Estuary village. It not only brought the residents happiness and Christmas cheer, but also taught us students how good it feels to make someone’s day and give back to the community.

Congratulations to our Head Boy Liam Sargent who was a finalist at the Auckland College Sport Young Sportsman of the Year, in the Active Student Official of the Year.

He made it to the Top 3 out of the 111 schools represented.

The evening was held at Eden Park and Liam went with his parents, DP Mr Mark Nickless and Mr Antony Petrie who is Liam’s CMRFU Referring Mentor.

We are extremely proud of what Liam has achieved with his Rugby Refereeing and know that he has a huge future ahead of him.

For all girls not wishing to trial, who want to make up their own team, please advise Mrs Coe ASAP. We are happy to take you under the College Club Name.

Uniforms, bibs, balls, first aid supplied to all teams. We require each team to have at least 8 players and a named adult coach and manager.

TRIALS FORMAT: We are running a different format for our trials this year.

Trial 1: This is for all Year 10, 11, 12 and 13. Held at the Waiuku Netball Courts - 5.30 – 7.00pm Dates: Monday 17th, Tuesday 18th, Wednesday 19th, Monday 24th, Tuesday 25th February 2020.

At the conclusion of these trials Gold and Silver will be announced. From here we will name Bronze, Brass, Ivory (numbers depending).

Trial 2: This is for all Year 9 Students. Held at the Waiuku Netball Courts - 5.30 – 7.00pm Dates: Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th March 2020.

Depending on numbers we may need 1 more. From here we will name Platinum and all the other Year 9 teams.

Waiuku Netball Centre Opening Day for 2020 is Saturday 2nd May .

School Uniform Changes Uniform sales will cease at the college from the end of this school year and in future will take place at the Warehouse in Pukekohe. We have entered into a contract with SchoolTech to manufacture and sell our items through the red shed. This will mean lower prices for a range of items and availability on weekends and out of school hours. There is one new uniform item which is a grey monogrammed hoody which we believe will be popular with the students especially in winter. Non uniform hoodies will not be acceptable.
