OPEN LETTER
TO THE CHAPTER From the new Director
“I want to say THANK YOU! For electing me as the new Director of the Paris Chapter. It is with great enthusiasm that I accept this posi-tion.
Again, I want to THANK our past Director, Andy Fasken, for the fine job he did for our chapter for the past two years.
With your help we can make 2004 a great year for the Paris chapter and still have a lot of fun.
The newly elected officers and I will be meeting soon to plan sev-eral activities for this year. So, get ready, roll up your sleeves and let’s have a great 2004.
One of the first events we will be working on is the Second Annual Harley-Davidson MDA Chili Cook-Off, and we will be selecting teams for this event as well as asking eve-ryone to participate. I would ap-preciate any suggestions that you may have to make this a great fundraiser for the MDA and lots of fun at the same time.”
Update : The Chili Cook-Off was held on Saturday, March 27th, see winners on page five.

Allen Poole Gone But Not Forgotten This corner of the world was a better place, because Allen Poole was here. Always quick to lift the spirits of those he met, it was hard to be down cast in the pres-ence of his broad smile and infec-tious laughter. A friend to saint and sinner alike, one could al-ways count on his sincere and honest loyalty. If ever you needed a friend, Allen could be counted on to be that friend. Space does not permit the recall of the many miles we rode to-gether, but the ride was more fun because Allen was there. From the rain soaked hills of Okla-homa, to the hot dusty roads of South Dakota, he was there. With the words “Paris, Texas” emblazoned upon his Harley windshield, he was proud of who he was, proud of his biker friends and proud of his Savior Jesus Christ. We will miss you, Allen.
It was 10 years ago—May, 1994 when the Paris Harley Owners Group was formed. It was started by a few hardy and road-ready bik-ers. With a lot of sorting out details with Chapter Support in Milwaukee and the blessings, hard work and support of the Chapman’s, it was off and running. Below is a list of the first officers and in the next col-umn a list of the Charter Members.

Paris Harley Davidson recently entered the Texas cus-tom bike building scene and was promptly rewarded at the Easy Riders bike show on March 20th, 2004. Bob Ables of Paris, who commissioned Paris Harley for the build, entered the bike in the show and promptly grabbed a second place trophy in the “In The Wind” class. Not bad for the fist time out! Pictured here, the bike is a frame up custom-built soft tail, that sports a fat tire look and a metallic Stars and Stripes paint theme. Congratulations Doc! The Vault is where it’s happ’nin’
The Paris HOG Chapter will meet the last Tuesday of every month at 6:30 P.M.. in the “Vault.” The Vault was once a bank then a drug store. Located on the southeast corner of the Plaza in down town Paris, it is now the favorite haunt of the Paris HOGs.
Some meetings will have food available and sometimes we plan dinner rides after the meetings. A big thanks to Cody and Steve and associates for mak-ing the facilities available to us!
Mark your calendar, the last Tuesday each month at 6:30 in The Vault.

Foote Notes: Three rather inebriated “bubbas” were at a baseball game and as luck would have it, were seated behind three nuns. Trying to see who could be the most obnoxious, one of the three said loudly, “I’ve decided to move to Montana, there’s only 50 nuns in the whole state.” The nuns ignored the crass comment. Not to be out done, another of the three stooges said, “ I’m going to Colorado, there ain’t but 25 nuns there.” No response from the nuns. The third “Coor’s head” said, I’m moving to Wyoming, there’s only 10 nuns in the whole damned state.” Finally, one of the nuns turns around and says softly, “Why don’t you go to Hell, there aren’t any nuns there.” Famous Last Words: I’ll get a world record for this. I think I can make it. So you’re a cannibal. Don’t worry, it’s fireproof. He’s probably just hibernating. Pull the pin and count to what? That’s odd. This doesn’t taste right. Nice doggie. Remember, never kick a cow patty on a hot summer day and never squat with your spurs on.

Remember that if you are rid-ing with a passenger, it is best
if the passenger gives the hand signals while you con-centrate on the road.”
There is a video and hand-book made available by the Harley-Davidson Rider’s Edge Academy of Motorcycling at the dealership on this very subject and is available to check out to review in the comfort of your own home…..so, check it out to-day!!
If you haven’t already done so, you are encouraged to take a motorcycle safety course sponsored by Texas DPS and Honda.
The following article is taken from the June, 1994 edition of the Paris H.O.G. newsletter and it bears repeating over and over again.
“Remember that when riding in a group, ride in a stag-gered forma-tion. The lead bike occupies the left tire-track of the lane while the second bike is approximately 1-second behind and in the right-tire-track of the lane.
The third bike is in the left track, 2 seconds behind the lead and so on.
The rule of thumb to remem-ber is that you should be able to see the face of the rider

SAFETY TIPS
Destinations: Ain’t God good. He has created an unending array of interesting sites and locations, all for us to enjoy! Of course, He leaves it up to us to decide how and when we choose to enjoy His handy work. The location of the site will dictate the “how” we visit, the climate is a major factor as to the “when.” Though some locations can only be viewed aboard a ship, train, or air-plane, those viewed from astraddle a Harley-Davidson are the most fun to HOGs. As to climate, July and Au-gust are the best times to go north of the Mason-Dixon line, many moun-tain passes are closed from mid-October to mid-April. But don’t just
get on your Harley and start riding, though that will work too. Give some thought and planning to your destination. Don’t know where to go? Start at the local library, or get a road atlas, talk to friends and fellow HOGs, do some research. Every state has a travel bureau with loads of free guides and information that they will gladly mail to you, just pick up the phone and call their 800 number. And don’t forget the internet. The National Parks Ser-vice (www.nps.gov) lists all the parks and visitor information and most have park photos. Many cit-ies have web sites designed to lure the traveling public. The site will usually be www.city.com.
Paris Harley-Davidson has a copy of all past HOG newsletters and most contain articles with exciting destinations. Spend some time browsing the fascinating newsletter articles and then add your own trips to the collection. Here’s a brief list of some of my favorite U.S. rides (western Canada is also great). Colorado cities and highways: Salida (hwys 24 north or 50 west) Buena Vista (hwy 82 to Aspen) South Fort (hwy 149 to Gunnison) Durango (hwy 550 to Ouray; Mesa Verde) Montana Red Lodge (hwy 212 to Bear Tooth Pass) Kalispell (Glacier Nat. Park; hwy 2 west) Oregon coast and Crater Lake Bend (hwy 26 to Ontario; Crater Lake) Florence (hwy 101 south to California) Ashville, N. Carolina— Smoky Mountains Costal Maine and U.S. Hwy. 1
To Terry Christian, a special thanks for the wonderful Christ-mas experience that we were all able to share with the families that we helped.
The Chili Cook-Off was a great success with only a short time to plan it.
We couldn’t have pulled it off without you!
Evalyn Battey, you have the jobs that no one else wants, and you are great! We can’t thank you enough. You not only keep us together as a group , but your planning of group activities is especially wonderful.
This begins a new year for all of the Paris H.O.G. Chapter.
We have had a wonderful year with new beginnings and so many new things to work to-ward for the 2004 year. Our ap-preciation and thanks go out to each officer for your dedication to the cause and the work you have done.
It is a huge commitment from each of you to accept the re-sponsibility of being an officer.
To Andy Fasken—a job well done! The last 2 years you have gone beyond the call of duty and we all thank you!
Every position is special and re-quires the help from all officers and members.
We appreciate you sharing your time with us!
To all of the remaining directors and volunteers, THANK YOU!
This year’s Chili Cook-Off was held on Saturday, March 27th at Paris Harley-Davidson and was well attended. Some “old faces” and new ones as well, but all seem to agree that it was the “best danged chili this side of Terlingua and that’s no stretch.”
If you were lucky, you got of bowl of the winning chili cooked up by Red Holmes (apron) representing People’s National Bank, followed by the Liberty National Bank and in 3 rd place, our own “Head HOG,” Andy Fasken. They tell me that many a Coor’s lite were devoured to try and put out the “internal fires.”

There weren’t many motorcycles in Paris at that time—Roger Powell, Mac Cleere and John Carr almost names them all.
We sold our very first motorcycle , a Honda S65, on June 5, 1968 to Mr. Long from Cooper, TX., the begin-ning of 35 great years!
Todd came along in 1969 and Cody a few years later. Not only did our family grow, but also our motorcy-cle world.
We moved to our present location in 1982 and purchased Yamaha and Harley-Davidson in 1987 and our growth began. And, to our amazement, it was much greater than we imagined! The clothing, the new customers, the fun—it was

Glen & Donna Chapman began a journey of hard work, determina-tion, lots of fun and millions of won-derful friends and memories.
We were not old (or smart] enough to be scared. Looking back, we now know that we would have been terrified had we known the obsta-cles before us.
Our Honda dealership was located at 3680 Lamar, the location where Eckerd’s Drug Store now stands. Glen worked 2 jobs for a while and drove back and forth between Bon-ham and Paris.
Timmy was 2 and started his life in the motorcycle world with us.
a different and wonderful motorcycle world in the 90’s. It got to be much more than we could handle with just the few employees we had—we needed help!
Thanks to 3 special sons, Tim, Todd and Cody. They each offer their own unique talents to the team and have taken the motorcycle world that we have lived into their own hands and have made it grow beyond our expec-tations.
It has been a wonderful ride which will continue until…….and we thank each one of you for letting us share your sport, your lives and your joy.
