Omaha Lancers forward Jake Henderson has committed to play NCAA hockey at Providence College following his USHL career.

Henderson has recorded five points (3g, 2a) over 26 games for the Lancers this season. He scored his first USHL goal on November

8th which proved to be the game-winner in the 5-2 victory over the Tri-City Storm. The 16-year-old came to the League this season after being signed to a “tender” by Omaha. He had previously played in the St. Louis AAA Blues youth organization.

“I knew Providence was the right place for me,” said Henderson. “I loved the area, loved the fact it’s a smaller school, and to play in Hockey East was big. It is a huge weight off my shoulders. Now I can focus on finishing

high school and really enjoy the rest of my time in the USHL.”

Henderson is joined by Lancers team-mate Ryan Tait who is also committed to Providence College following his time in Omaha.

“Jake is a great young hockey player and this is a huge step in his development,” said Lancers head coach Brian Kaufman. “Providence is a great fit for Jake and we’re very excited for what the future holds for him.”

Five other current USHL players are also commit-ted to Providence College, including Dylan McLaughlin (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders), Brian Pinho (Indiana Ice), Terrance Amorosa (Sioux City Musketeers), Thomas Aldworth (Tri-City Storm), and

Truman Reed (Youngstown Phantoms).Providence College is a member of Hockey

East and has nine USHL alumni on the Friars roster this season; John Gilmour (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders), Mark Adams (Chicago Steel), Kyle McKenzie (Dubuque Fighting Saints), Trevor Mingoia (Tri-City Storm), Tom Parisi (Team USA), Stefan Demopoulos (Omaha Lancers), Nick Saracino (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders), Jon Gillies (Indiana Ice), and Nick Ellis (Des Moines Buccaneers).

This weeks Joe Boccardi’s Hockey Stop Co-Teams of the Week are the Varsity teams from Chaminade and DeSmet High School.

One of the best things that keeps so many of us enthralled with Mid-States High School Hockey in St. Louis are the great traditions that connect the fans to the players, teams and schools. Of the many rivalries and tra-ditions, two games have been a constant among fans of the Original Eight club teams. These rivalry games are what connect the student bodies to the game on ice each year. And for 42 years the Jesuit Cup (DeSmet vs. SLUH) and the Marianist Cup (Chaminade vs. Vianney) have been staged.

This week the Joe Boccardi’s Ristorante Co-Teams of the Week are a pair of Mid-States High School teams that prevailed in their respective tradition on ice to honor each school’s heritage. The Jesuit Cup honors the order of Jesuit priests that founded each pres-tigious institution and this year DeSmet raised the Cup in a thrilling 5-4 win over St. Louis University High School. In the Marianist Cup tilt, Chaminade held on for a 3-2 win in their 42nd consecutive meeting against Marianist rival, Vianney Golden Griffins, in the game played this year at the Hardee’s Iceplex.

On the ice, the games will give p a r t i c i p a t -ing teams a mid-season m e a s u r i n g stick in their p r e p a r a -tion for the post season C h a l l e n g e Cup. And it hasn’t hurt over the 42 years that these four schools play the game pretty well. DeSmet has taken home 14 Mid-States titles while SLUH captured its first Mid-States crown a year ago. Chaminade is still waiting for its first sip of the Cup while Vianney has won two championships along with 10 trips to the finals.

JESUIT CUPDeSmet trailed by two goals three different

times during the contest, but a Jeff Makowski goal with just 6.8 seconds left in regulation,

sealed the Spartans first Cup Championship since 2010. Makowski chipped in three assists as well to lead DeSmet (14-3-1) to the vic-tory at Queney Park in a game that featured some spectacular play by both teams. Other DeSmet goals were scored by Charley Combs who notched two, while Trent Frederic and Joseph Gindhart each tallied one.

The defending Mid-States champs, St. Louis University High Billikens (12-4-2) received two goals from freshman Luke Gassett, and single goals from Andrew Ott and Patrick Pence.

“We have a young team that made mistakes that cost us. But the kids are still learning and you have to play a full three periods to beat an experienced team like DeSmet. I’m sure we will see them again in the playoffs,” said SLUH head coach Kevin Fitzpatrick, coaching in his second Jesuit Cup.

The 2013-14 Varsity DeSmet Spartans are Aaron Brickman, Brent Feltes,Thomas Amato, Joseph Gindhart, Tanner Pederson, Jake Schulte, Charles Combs, Jeff Makowski, Jared Westcott, William Carter, Kevin Pallacic, Grant Wilhelm, Matthew Wahle, Brenden Thomeczek, Mike Troll, Connor Walsh, Trent Frederic, Joseph Wiele, Alex Benben, Michael Joyce, and Tim Makowski.

MARIANIST CUPWhat a battle as both teams jockeyed

back and forth throughout the game, but Chaminade (14-2-1) survived a late Vianney flurry to hold on for a 3-2 win. The Golden Griffins with third period goals by seniors Nick Allgeyer and Chris Brown rallied but the effort fell short. Vianney (7-9-2) now has only two wins in the last ten years of the Marianist Cup

HOCKEY: Invented By Boys, Perfected By Girls

When girls lace up their skates, they put their heart into it. It’s not just about winning. It’s about heading out to the rink to have fun. It’s about building friendships and learn-ing new skills. These are reasons girls have such great hockey memories...

For 17 year old St. Louisan Jincy Dunne it was fun to return to St Louis over the holi-days to see old friends, think back to special moments, key practices, or the excitement of heading out to the rink with family and teammates. Now a member of the United States Women’s National team, Jincy also paid back a tribute to one of her original hockey clubs where she got her start.

Jincy started out playing roller hockey when she was five years old and at the age of nine, Dunne started playing ice hockey with the St. Louis Cyclones girls hockey club. And to the Cyclones this week Jincy made a donation of hockey equipment to thank the club that gave her a start on ice.

Each member of the United States Women’s National Team had an opportu-nity to designate an organization to which USA Hockey would provide sets of beginner equipment to further grow the game. Jincy of course chose the club that gave her her start, the St Louis Cyclones.

Jincy stated that she picked her original ice hockey club because “I started ice hockey

with the Cyclones organization, and I want these girls to realize anything is possible if they believe and work hard. I hope this gives

more girls the opportunity to play hockey and enjoy the game like I have.”

Among other teams, Jincy has also played for the AAA Lady Blues, 97’ AAA Blues (boys), the US National U18 Girls team, and current-ly is skating with the US Women’s National team.

as Chaminade has cut the Griffins overall lead in the series to 23-19.

Vianney goalie Brendan Shuck stopped 16 shots while Chaminade backstopper Dan Kern was called upon to save 29 shots with several key saves in a late flurry by Vianney with the netminder pulled. Scoring for Chaminade were Matt Trunko, Michael Parisot, and Trey Schneider.

“Vianney really made us work for this win. Our boys really fought hard and I thought we got a really good effort from everyone. Dan (Kern) was outstanding in the nets and the Vianney keeper matched his effort. Another great Marianist game,” said Chaminade coach Nathan Hirsch.

Chaminade’s 2013-14 Varsity team is Dan Kern, Matthew Johnson, Bradley Johnson, Ian Wolverton, Adam Roeder, Michael Parisot, John Schwartz, Thomas Schneider, Bobby Hogan, Andrew Acree, Ellis Burgett, Mitchell LoCigno, Kenneth Behlman, Jake Carothers, Lee Holtzman, Luke Radetic, Jacob Debus, Matthew Trunko, John Sheehan, Sam Johnson and Noah Catt.

St. Louis Jr. Blues defenseman Adam Roeder has received a weekend call-up to play for the NAHL’s Janesville Jets.

This is Roeder’s second call-up to the Jets this season and he has already signed a ten-der to play for Janesville in 2014-15. Roeder will join the Jets in Janesville to practice with them before heading to Michigan for a two-game set with the Michigan Warriors.

On December 31st, Roeder was named the NA3HL’s Central Division Star of the Week. The 17-year-old native of Ballwin, Missouri, is one of the team leaders in plus/minus with

a +18 rating and is second in defensive scor-ing with 23 points.

“Adam is so good offensively, and when you combine that with his responsible play on the defensive end, you get one heck of a defenseman,” said Jr. Blues head coach Chris Flaugher. “He is never satisfied and is always working hard to become a better hockey player.”

Roeder has played three games with the Jets this season and has no points. He is one of over three dozen NA3HL alumni that is currently playing in the NAHL this season.

The object of the game of hockey is to score more goals than the opposing team. Throughout the history of hockey there have been many pure goal scorers. Common traits would be speed, agility, power, shooting

the puck and accu-racy. But the ability to get the puck off the stick and on net is a skill r e s e r v e d for goal s c o r e r s . St. Louis University High for-ward Luke Gassett dis-

played many of the notable skills of a prime time player as the SLUH freshman had some very big goals in several big games in Mid-States play this past week.

Gassett, only a freshman, leads the Junior Bills in scoring this year with 11 goals and nine assists, but his biggest surge in scor-ing has come in the last four games. In a losing effort, Gassett scored twice in a 5-4 Jesuit Cup loss to DeSmet. But the 5’8’’ 130 pound winger scored the game winning goals in victories over Vianney and Oakville and a game tying goal against Lindbergh. In SLUH’s 5-3 win over Oakville, Gassett scored twice and his third period goal 42 seconds into the third period was the difference in a 2-1 win over Vianney.

“He has been playing some big minutes this year for us. We have 12 newcomers in the lineup this year and Luke (Gassett) has been a pleasant surprise to say the least,’’ said SLUH head coach Kevin Fitzpatrick.
