HOBY IllinoisAlumni Association
Outstanding IL Alum!
The first question HOBYs ask
themselves when they complete their
seminar is What now? With the
creation of the HOBY Illinois Alumni
Association, we hope to answer that
question and provide a strong networkthat all Illinois alumni can be a part of
for years to come. Our president,
Mitch Dickey, says it best: Our goal
is to make the Alumni
Association a way for all HOBYs
to connect and stay involved with
the great people who also went
through HOBY. We are excited for
you to be a part of this association and
cant wait for the future! Feel free to
contact us at [email protected],
or join our group on Facebook!
A 2000 Connecticut alum, Russ is thekind of volunteer and person you love
to have around. He has a dry sense ofhumor and loves to joke, but always
works hard and has innovative ideasready to put into use. He often goes out
of his way to make others laugh orfeel comfortable, and is very
passionate about HOBY. Aside fromHOBY and his personality, Russ haspassed the BAR exam in two states,
Illinois and Connecticut, and currentlypractices in Chicago. Recently, he was
named the 2013 WLC Chairman.Outstanding, Russ!

2012 WORLD LEADERSHIP CONFERENCECreate Yourself was this summers theme at the 2012 HOBY WLC. 427 outstanding
ambassadors and over 100 outstanding staff members from all over the world came
together at Loyola University in Chicago for one intense week. There, they learned how tobetter themselves and in turn better their community. Seven differentservice projects
were completed and a great number ofinspiring speakers changed the lives of all the
ambassadors. Cheers and laughs were ever-present throughout the week, along with tears
following the speeches of those who have struggled in the process of growing to be who
they are today. Through many sleepless nights andjam-packeddays, bonds were formed
that will never be broken. At an emotional closing banquet, the ambassadors beautifully
sang For Good and said their final good-byes to theirnew HOBY family.
HOBY IL-N134 ambassadors from 96 different schoolsworked hard to improve their leadership skillswith 56 staff members help at IL-N this year.
A 20-minute walk to a nearby beach proved tobe worth it when everyone was able to shovel
sand blocking a handicapped walkway!
HOBY IL-CSWith 125 ambassadors and about 70staff members, IL-CS definitely made animpact on its community this summer. 4lemonade stands were held for ALSF andmore than 200 cards were made for theChildrens Miracle Network. Outstanding!

Mitch Dickey: President
My name is Mitch Dickey and I am honored to serve this year as your Alumni
Association President. Hailing from Bourbonnais, Illinois I just completed my
senior year of high school and will be attending the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign to study political science and business administration. I am
a 2010 alum from ILN and WLC, and have volunteered at ILN, ILCS, and WLC
my past two years of being an alumnus. Along with being your president, I am
serving as the Assistant to the WLC Chair for 2013. On the side, I love playing
soccer and volleyball (sand and indoor). I also am an avid photographer and a
computer nerd; so if you need any help finding a laptop for school, or want to
build a desktop of your own, shoot me an e-mail. I am extremely excited to be
working with all of you to create a unified Illinois alumni base, and hope to see
many of you at the events we plan for you in the coming year. If you have any
questions or would like to get more involved with the Alumni Association, shoot
me an e-mail. [email protected].

senior chemistry major at Northwestern University bound for graduate studies
in computational chemistry. I am a proud member of the Northwestern
University Marching Band and I'm involved in managing all of the
information/mail desks at my school. Beyond school, I enjoy photography,
running, and my fiance Ashton! If you have any ideas or want to get involved
in HOBY, feel free to get in touch!
Graham Peck: IL-CS Alumni AdvisorI am beginning my second year as Alumni Advisor for Illinois. While I

Lauren Nagle: Treasurer/Secretary
Hi! I am a senior at John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights. I was an
ambassador at the HOBY Illinois North seminar in 2011 and I loved HOBY
so much that I had to come back in 2012 to be a part of the Junior Staff! This
year, I hold the position of Secretary/Treasurer on the Alumni Association
Executive Board. As Secretary/Treasurer I will assist in managing our
budget and funds as well as document our meetings and help out with the
database. I am so excited to be a part of the Alumni Association and am
looking forward to what's to come!
Selena Kowalski: Vice President
I was a HOBY 2010 IL-N ambassador from New Trier Township High School
in Winnetka, IL. Since my local seminar, I have served as a junior staff
member at the 2011 and 2012 HOBY IL-N seminars. Going forward I hope to
attend the IL-CS seminar in 2013 and years beyond, continue to attend IL-N
seminars, and volunteer as a staff member at HOBY's World Leadership
Congress. In 2010 the seminar changed my life, and I keep coming back to
HOBY with hopes to help change the lives of others through the seminars. In
my free time, I love horseback riding and dancing and will be attending the
University of Virginia in the fall of 2012.
Kelly Holem: Events Chair
Hi fellow HOBY people! My name is Kelly and I am your Events

since returned stateside, graduated high school, and am currently
working on my bachelor's degree in Anthropology at the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Go Illini! I am so excited to return to HOBY
by planning super fun events for all of our wonderful alumni! I know all of
you have been up to amazing things since your seminars and we all
want to hear about them! I hope to see you there!
Ozakh Ahmed: Communications Chair
In 2011, HOBY ILN made a huge impact in my life, and I couldnt help but
come back for more! This summer, I was on the junior staff at ILNs seminar
and most recently I have been elected to be your Communications Chair. Iwill be piecing together this quarterly newsletter as well as advertising
events throughout Illinois and reaching out to active alumni. If you ever have
an idea for an article for this newsletter, please feel free to email it to me at
