1. What Model To Build

Here you have to decide what to build. The two main categories are propeller aircraft, and jets. The propeller aircraft are mainly World War One and Two aircraft – the most famous is probably the Supermarine Spitfire. The jets are like our Lockheed martin F16s to the Concorde supersonic jets.

2. Scale

Next question is the scale which are normally 1/144, 1/72, 1/48, 1/32, and 1/24. The main scale 1/72 came about 1 inch (2.5cm) to 6 feet (180cm) which is rough the height of a man.

3. Basic Tools Required

A. Swann-Morton Trimaway knife or cutter B. Nail clipper C. A pair of scissors D. Rough and course grade sandpaper, or emery paper E. Humbrol cement or other modeling glue F. Humbrol enamel or other modeling paints

BUILDING SCALE AIRCRAFT MODELS

4. Plan

You have to decide what do you want to do with your model. Do you want it straight from the box, following the instructions, and do you want to make it into a diorama (with base and activity to create a scene).

5. Read Instructions of Model Before Starting

Before starting any model, it is advisable to study the instructions for the manufacturer’s plan of building the model. The steps of building an aircraft normally has logic of interior, to body, to armaments.

Then you can cut the parts needed from the sprue according to the instructions with either a knife or cutter, and then test dry fitting them. Then trim off any excess plastic before using a little cement to stick them permanently. The instructions normally advise what parts may need painting before gluing, and we advise scraping away the paint from areas which join to allow better adhesiveness.

Advice – when you make a temporary halt in your modeling, put everything back in the box carefully, especially small parts.

b) Entries will be judged based the following basis:

Airfix Competition Judging Definitions

• Basic Construction: this is defined as the building of the entry eg are the gaps filled up, seams removed,

• Basic Painting: this is defined as the quality of the finished paint job , and if it is in the correct colours for that role and theatre of operation.

• Basic Finishing: this is defined as the overall completeness of the entry in terms of appearance: does it have rigging, are the decals on straight?

• Conversion : this is defined as work carried out to change the original kit so that it is substantially different to the original eg single seater converted to two seater. This can be kit bashing, scratch building, etc.

• Modification: this is defined as work carried out to improve a kit or kit part eg dropped flaps, canted rudder, opened canopy, opened gun bays, folded wings.

• Creativity: is there an innovative trick or technique to achieve the finished entry eg kitchen foil for bare metal finish

• Gutsiness : this is defined as building a difficult kit, or doing a difficult paint scheme , or doing a difficult modification or conversion eg all panels opened

• Realism: this is defined as how accurate this compares to the real aircraft or setting (historically), showing off oil leaks , streaks, exhaust stains, whether the finished model is correct for that version and role and markings,

• Others: these will be additional to the model eg using a diorama to create an appealing setting where the aircraft is operating. The same criteria above will be applied and the additional together with the model will be treated as a whole, so more things means possibly more points (or more penalties).

Notes: Judges will apply these general elements to all aspects of judging. Note that at the end of the day the judges are looking for examples of good modelling; a badly constructed entry will not get very far even if its got a fantastic paint job, or even if its placed in a beautiful diorama setting!

c) ALL JUDGES’ DECISIONS ARE FINAL and no appeals, discussions, arguments, correspondence, or demands for a recount will be entertained.

d) Entries will be on display for public viewing from 10am onwards from 9th - 11th November 2017. Prize presentation will be held at 2.00pm on Saturday 11th November 2017.

e) Organisers will not be liable for any loss or damage to any models that occur during the whole period of the event.
