4 Bold attempt is half success.

California

人鱼。我们醉倒在金碧辉煌的拉斯维加斯,踏上了无数名人走过的星光大道;

“you are never too late to learn.”

Perhaps there could be no sky in July so azure that it does not point forward to a clearer, or sunset in August so rosy that it does not waken the vision of the nature. Then and there blows the tender breeze through the pines, rosemary waving in the air and bells ringing through the fair.

A week is gone. Again, on a golden afternoon, I am lying in the vastness of a grassy hillside besides Royce Hall, an iconic building at UCLA, with the olivine leaves jig-jawing underneath, and the reflection of a splendid sunset spilling upon me. Little squirrels are picking up nuts everywhere, gamboling a step after a stop, back and forth. Lying in this picturesque scene, I am reading T. S. Eliot, which is mandatory since I am taking Critical Reading and Writing taught by Professor

Lopez. She is accomplished and intelligent.

Being critical, however, requires necessary argumentation. In class, we sit in an enclosed space, and Lopez is the Queen of the realm. The core of the first two lectures is the “enthymeme,” which consists of three basic elements in an argument: the claim, the reason and the warrant. We practice a myriad of debates, including mine, with American students. Yet the challenge is far beyond that. As a course of the English Department, reading the Anthology of American Literature is also a must. Prior to attending each lecture, I have to read - sometimes it goes to scores of pages - Barack Obama, Claude McKay, Allen Ginsberg and so forth. You are to develop nebulous concepts otherwise.

In addition to that, paper-writing, in particular long papers, is commonplace for the students majored in liberal arts. At home, you might be cursing some teachers due to essays of thousands of words; nevertheless, assignments of ten-to-twelve pages are common here. Even the professors may shorten the odds of accomplishing works of such type. If you are not capable of completing the course, you will have no choice but to drop.

American colleges could be challenging, discouraging, sometimes even intimidating but mostly, exhilarating, because if you are on top of it, you will make it. Academic study at UCLA is like a painstaking itinerary; yet when the jet flies all the way off to the end, your efforts come back. Reading extensively and writing voluminously grow my mentality and change my philosophy. And that accounts for why we go to the

college.

Apart from courses of reason, teachers like Jeremy Kelley and Sylvia Merschel, are a source of joviality. Both teach Public Speaking. Jeremy, a Ph.D. degree candidate who studies Applied Linguistics at UCLA, even outshines a sea of other professors. Professor Sylvia Merschel, who has been teaching at the Communication Department of UCLA as long as three decades, is already my intimate friend. Both of them exemplify the American teacher: prudent and humorous, affable and approachable. Under the tutelage of such wise professors, UCLA is definitely a paradise for the brainiac to notch up creatively and to break the status quo, but at the same time, to break down on the proverbial dance floor. It is a place where one person, or a team of persons, if they are the right ones, can change me completely.

As the sun weakens, the starry firmament falls. Hints of beauty and serenity are more immense than I have ever known or imagined strike me. Out of the blue, I am interrupted by a flow of wavering. As fair winds shake the buds of the night, and doves rest on the branches to catch what you say; a mood of melancholy descends on me for losing possession of the twinkling day, but memories of this period of togetherness still sparkle in my mind.

Evening comes, and the campus returns to its customary tranquility. As the night paces further, the squirrels come back to their homes, as well as all the Bruin Bears*, to sleep. Because they are brave and bravo, the Bruin Bears are anticipating the advent of a new week.

We arrived at UCLA on the last day of July. The

campus is very, very, very big. I have got lost again

and again. Sometimes I even cannot tell the direction.

So I have to turn to somebody for help. People here

are really friendly. Everyone I asked patiently showed

me the way. onece I was looking for ROYCE

HALL...Here comes the picture

That is the building actually I was looking for at that time. I was holding a map in

hand, looking around and around. A madam aged sixty or so came up to me, saying

"Hi ... hope you are not lost!" Then she kindly showed me the position of royce hall.

luckily, I was not late for my class!

There are people who are ready to help and who will follow you in case U get the

wrong way! It happened like this. well...I got lost again and came aross a young man

who was jogging at that time. i asked,

excuse me where is Rieber Hall?

"Walk along the road and then turn left at the crossing and then go straight..." He said

a lot but I didn't seem to get him. He was so kind that he took me along for one or

two block. then I said

"Yes, I know how to get to Rieber now. Thank you for your help". I really thought I

had known then.

I walked on for a while, 5min or so and unluckly, I found there were two ways in front.

so which one should I take?

"Hey, I just want to make sure you don't go wrong." The young man suddenly came

up from behind. He showed me the right way and then left.

It's unbelievable, yeah?We were neither friends nor acquaintance. But he bothered to

give a hand.

A lot of people here not only show you the way but lead you directly to where iyou

want to go. Can you believe it a country that is scloded for its corruption in some

countries in the world have so many lovely people!

Several days ago my pc was broken down so I had to

find somewhere to get it repaired. I asked a girl who

was sitting next table to me in the dining hall. They told

me that maybe I could send it to STC(STUDENT

TECHNOLIGY CENTRE). The next day, what a

coincidence that I came across the girl again but I didn't

recognize her at that time actually it was her who said

to me

"Hi, has you got your computer repaired?"

"Yes, i've sent it to STC. thank you!" ^^

"Great! see you!"

I'm just sharing what I have experienced here. No comparison. No conlusion.Just

I am going to write in English since I major in English. You know what? These days

are really frustrating. But actually it is my own problem.

The weather here is great, like what was expected, cool in the morning and evening.

And the afternoon is a little bit hot. What I cannot bear is the long distance between

our dormitory hall and the classroom. My Philosophy instructor warned that his class

would take off my life, but now my legs first.

You know what is the biggest shame for me? I

cannot understand what the instructor said. The

first class almost smashed me to the ground. The

old woman was talking three times faster than

TOTEL listening, and tens of thousands of jargons.

When the class was over, I was still dazzling in

my seat. She is a real actor, I should admit. But I

have to drop this class. And my Philosophy class

is more challenging. The first paper is about 30

pages, and even all the native speakers in the class cannot understand it. About the

assignment, I have to make an outli ne of two pages and a paper of five pages every

week. OMG! God bless me.

Maybe you would suggest me to take other classes, but except for the ESL classes. All

the classes are very challenging, so you waste up your time by keeping changing

classes. I am done with that. I have to take it. Taking ESL classes will be a shame on

me, so I will not take it. I have enough shame these days. Shame on me, English

major.

What is sweet is UCLA students are really nice. They will tell you the way in detail,

and everyone is willing to do that. Just now, a guy even took me to the library.

Sometimes those hot girls are nice too, aha. I lose my way quite often, usually 2 hours

of my schedule is on the road.

By the way, one of my roommates Luca (the right one) is very interesting. Yesterday

he taught me some simple Italian, but I could not make it. Isn’t he handsome? Aha, he

is got to be followed by a group of bitches!

Right, I’m going to LA, yay!!! :D If I say America, what’s the top three that first comes to your mind? You guys might probably give me tens of thousands of different answers. Universal Studio Hollywood 07/29/11 I’m a huge fun of Hollywood movies. The Simpsons, Shrek, King Kung, and Jurassic Park etc, I’ve watched them all. And today I had an adventure at a place where makes those all possible—the Entertainment capital of LA, universal studio Hollywood. What impressed me most is the go behind-the-scenes on the legendary studio tour to explore Hollywood’s most famous backlot in the world’s largest working movies studio. I experienced the award-winning King Kong the world’s largest, most intense 3-D, encountered the eerie plane crash from War of the Worlds, saw Wisteria Lane hit series Desperate Housewives, came face-to-face with Norman Bates at the legendary Bates Motel from Psycho, and witnessed the explosive special effects of the Fast and the Furious: Extreme Close-up, which is a visually stunning experience. Also, The Simpsons Ride truly delivers with loads of in-jokes and satire for fanatics and tons of thrills and fun for casual fans. Of course, I can’t resist the attraction of Shrek 4-D, which put me in the action with hair-raising, eye-popping, butt-busting effects so real, it’s like I’m part of this movie.

Higher Education—UCLA 08/01/11 I’ve been so eager to come here UCLA to take the summer session class for a whole semester. Since I’ve been here, there are plenty of interesting things caught my attention. Those architectures on campus are masterpieces, such as Royce Hall, Powell Library, and Janss Steps etc. I’d never have enough of taking pictures of those. Besides, I enrolled two classes to get 8 units; one is The Art & Technique of Filmmaking, the other is Public Specking. Unlike the movie appreciation class I’ve had before, the professor teaching here is an actual film director. Thus, having his class makes me feel like being present at a backlot of film shooting. Yeah, once again, I’m a live film collection. However, I used to concentrate on the plot of the story far more than the filmmaking technique, now I know the way they make movies like the iceberg. 10% above is the glamour, such as shooting the film, going on location, working with the stars, going to the premier…what the public sees and responds to. Nevertheless, 90% below—all the behind the scenes work, like pre-production, production & especially post production, financing, distribution, lawyers, budgets, insurance… How the film is actually made!!! This really blew my mind.

High Caloric Food 08/02/11 Before I fly to America, I’ve been told that most of Americans are FAT. While, the truth is they look alright, and some are really stunning. Chiefly because they like to hit the gym, work out and have great enthusiasm to all kinds of sport, baseball, soccer, basketball mostly. But quite amount of food here are high caloric.

几天下来,说的最溜的英语就是“ Excuse me.Do you know where's the ....building?”

A LOT OF STAIRS,A LOT OF WALKING!

It has already been 7 days since I came to America. During these

seven-day tour and study, one thing that has impressed me so

greatly is the Chinese Influence. Whatever the place I have been

to, people will say “hello” to me with some simple Chinese. I am

so surprised when those American people greet me with Chinese

since I think America is a country of about ten thousand miles

away from China. They may not understand me very well, let

alone speak Chinese to me! However, what I have experienced is

totally a different thing. The following are just some pictures I

have taken in America, and they are all about China.

At last, I’d like to say, almost a week’s tour lets me know more about the world in which we are
