THE PIG CITY GARDEN CALENDARBy Daniel Marvin

WEEK of 8-10 mar. ‘10

Dining, Entertainment & Lodging

First I must tell you all that one very special lady who has some land outside the village learned that I could not have a garden where

we now rent and she thought it important for the Pig City Gardener to have a garden.. so she is permitting me to develop a garden in her back yard. Isn’t that very special! Another very special local reader of this column told this lady that he would be glad to till it for me so I could get a good start. Praise the Lord for bringing this all about. Cazenovia is such a very special place because of it’s special people!

One of our readers asked me to let her know about growing watermelons in this area where we are prone to short growing seasons, knowing that watermelons need time to mature without frost killing the vines. The first thing to do is to buy early variety seed only. Sugar Baby, a crimson, sweet “icebox” type, is a 75 - 80 day variety that weighs 8 - 12 pounds is available from most seed sources and there is a yellow watermelon (yes - yellow!) called Yellow Doll that weighs 5 - 8 pounds and is a 65 - 70 day variety. The seeds must be started inside and then care taken to transplant when there is NO DANGER of frost. I suggest you plant your seeds as directed in the packet and start 2 seeds in each 3” jiffy peat pot (set in a plastic plant tray for easy watering) that you can transplant to the garden in without disturbing the roots. Start under fluorescent lights in potting soil for the best start possible. When the danger of frost is gone you might want to transplant through black plastic mulch in your garden and put 3 peat pots in each water-melon “hill” in maximum sun area about 8 foot apart to give the vines the room they need. Thin each pot to the one best plant If you are concerned at all

For Lent...c r o c k p o t Salmon with caramelized onions and carrots

By Linda Larsen, About.com Guide, www.

RecipeReading.com

This delicious recipe is perfect for entertaining or for the holidays. Serve it with a rice pilaf or mashed potatoes to soak up all the wonderful juices.

Prep Time: 20 minutesCook Time: 8 hoursIngredients:•2 tablespoons olive oil•2 tablespoons butter•4 onions, coarsely chopped•1 (16 ounce) bag baby carrots•4 cloves garlic, minced•1-1/2 pound salmon filet•1/2 teaspoon salt

The Pharisees had to create a Judaism people could practice in their world. You could not change the Biblical commandments in any way. You had to interpret and apply them in a way that guaranteed that a modern Jew would not break those commandments accidentally or on purpose, but would have enough freedom to live a modern life. They got extremely creative, and the body of law they created is called The Talmud. It’s not a rulebook; it’s a casebook of rabbinic discussions, disputes, dissenting opinions, and consensus decisions on 800 years of cases. All the arguments and opinions are shown on the pages, and it takes a scholar a day to study one page of the Talmud, which fills a bookshelf.

The Talmud is still the basis of Judaism. Among orthodox scholars, the lawmaking process continues to deal with issues previous generations never thought of: organ transplants,

removing someone from life supports , in vitro fertilization, integrating women more fully into the ritual practices. As desirable as that is, it’s actually hard to do without breaking or changing the old commandments. These are problems for the orthodox. Liberal Jews don’t follow these laws literally.

Many years ago, the religion writer for the Concord Monitor wrote the standard Passover story, talking to the rabbi and a couple of local Jewish families. Then she got creative and found some Christians who also celebrate Passover. Jesus’ last supper with his disciples was a Passover Seder after all. The first Christians were all good, observant Jews. The naïve reporter intended to show how alike Jews and Christians are, that Passover is as much for Christians as for Jews.

Rabbi Bernard Taylor, Concord’s rabbi at the time, went to the Monitor and told the reporter that Jews are aware of the connections between Passover and Easter, but the connections are very painful for us. Not long ago, this was the most dangerous season of the year for European Jews.

at people you already hated anyway, get drunk, and do whatever you wanted to the Jews.. Hitler did not invent Jew-hatred. It was part of European religious teaching for 1,000 years before he came along.

The reason most American Christians don’t know about this is that Christian leaders stopped teaching that interpretation of the New Testament. Pope John Paul II actually apologized to the Jews for all the mayhem that old teaching caused through the centuries. Most contemporary Christians are taught that, since Jesus died for everybody’s sins, everybody bears some responsibility for his death.

There are four accounts of Jesus’ death in the Bible, and only one of them blames the Jews for the whole thing. King Herod, the corrupt collaborator with the Roman Empire, shares blame in some interpretations. The corrupt hereditary priesthood gets some blame. The Roman Empire itself gets a lot of blame

One totally upside down, inaccurate version blames “the Pharisees,” or lumps them together with the priests. The Pharisees were political opponents of the puppet King and the corrupt priests. The led a rebellion against Rome that took seven years and three of their legions to suppress.

Jesus probably was a Pharisee before he started his personal ministry at age 30. He lived in the Galilee, the north of Israel, where most of the Pharisees lived and had their academies. They tended to scoop up brilliant, spiritually promising teen-agers and educate them in their schools.

The Pharisees were the founders of modern Judaism from 200 B.C. to about 600 A.D. They were an aristocracy of merit, unlike the hereditary aristocrats of the priesthood. The Pharisees were the most learned, wise interpreters of Jewish law. They applied the 713 commandments in the Five Books of Moses (the Torah which God gave Moses on Mount Sinai) to their modern times. Those Biblical commandments were written for shepherds, and subsistence farmers in rural areas. The Pharisees’ world was urban, based on commerce and trade, and Jews had flourishing communities in Egypt, Rome, Greece, Iraq (Babylonia) and Iran (Persia), as well as the Holy Land.

Jews from the ends of the known world could not make pilgrimages to Jerusalem three times a year, and sacrifice the best of their animals and produce on the Holy Temple’s alter, as required by the Torah. The whole thing was outmoded, including the hereditary priesthood itself.

Please Don’t Wish MeHappy Easter

I have nothing against Christians or Christianity or any other religion that’s a source of spiritual truth for the believer. Gospel music, the oral tradition of the African-American sermon, and the literature of the New Testament are a source of spiritual truth for me. My fiancee and I have celebrated Christmas together for eight years. Before that, I was a permanent Christmas guest with my godson and his extended family.

But Easter and Holy Week are different. I have very mixed feelings about this collection of holidays for historical reasons many American non-Jews are totally unaware of. For my European ancestors, and all Jews who lived in the Christian world before World War II, Holy Week and Easter meant murder, mayhem, rape, and destruction of property -- all sponsored and sanctioned by Church and State

This is the time of year when Christians are reminded that The Jews, meaning all Jews for all time, are personally responsible for murdering the Lord. So it was OK to leave Church angry

Most of the Finger Lakes are considered two-story fisheries, containing both cold water (trout) and warmwater (bass) fisheries. And just as the fishing techniques (from sitting on shore fishing with a bobber to handlining copper or deep trolling with down-riggers) are varied, so are the fisheries of the Finger Lakes.

Lakes include brown trout, rainbow trout, Atlantic salmon, and lake trout. Lake trout is the “bread and butter” species in most of the lakes’ coldwater fisheries and may be caught in Skaneateles, Owasco, Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka, Canandaigua, Canadice and Hemlock Lakes. Skaneateles and Keuka Lakes

host natural reproducing lake trout. Rainbow trout are very abundant in Skaneateles lake, and also available in Owasco, Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka, Canandaigua, Canadice, and Hemlock Lakes. Although elusive in many of the lake fisheries, they avail themselves to anglers during the spring tributary fishing in Naples Creek, Catharine Creek, Grout Brook, Cayuga Inlet, Owasco Inlet, Cold Brook Stream (Keuka Lake Inlet), and Springwater Creek. Rainbow trout have become naturalized in Cayuga, Skaneateles, Owasco, Seneca, Keuka Hemlock, and Canandaigua Lakes with natural reproduction supplemented by stocking. Brown trout can be found in all the Finger Lakes except Conesus and Honeoye Lakes. Try shore fishing or surface trolling in the spring for browns. Atlantic salmon can be found in Skaneateles, Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka, and Hemlock Lakes.

Warm Water FishingThe warm water fisheries of the Finger Lakes are as varied

as the lakes. Popular fisheries include black bass (smallmouth and largemouth), walleye, yellow perch, northern pike and chain pickerel, with tiger muskies and panfish thrown in to round things off. The Finger Lakes produce some of the best bass fishing in the State. Try the shallow weedy areas of Cayuga, Otisco, Conesus and Honeoye for largemouth action and the slightly deeper areas of Seneca, Canandaigua, Cayuga, Keuka, Skaneateles, Otisco, Owasco and Hemlock for smallmouth. Walleye can be found in Honeoye, Conesus, Owasco and Otisco Lakes with spring being an excellent time

The reporter didn’t know any of this history. It’s nice to forget this nasty stuff, but enough people have to remember to keep history from repeating itself.

This kind of Jewish history is the reason some Jews seem clannish, ethnocentric, and fixated on anti-Semitism, and the state of Israel. Israel is the ultimate insurance that protects Jews from outbreaks of anti-Semitism around the world. As my grandfather used to say, “Jews who have this problem can do there. They’ll still have problems, but not that problem.”

Editor’s Note: I find it interesting to note that I believe this is why our fore fathers left Europe... to escape this kind of thing and leave it there. I seem to remember at least two occasions where we had to go back and save them from this sort of thing. I would also note as a modern Christian that I blame NO ONE that caused Jesus to be crucified, then or now. NO ONE. After all, no Judas, no

Resurrection. It seems very plain to me that God and Jesus were depending on the actors of the day to act out their roles... they were needed to play the roles they’d chosen for themselves to frame Jesus’s sacrifice. We are surrounded by the same actors for the same reasons today. If everything was good we, by our nature would never choose whether to listen to the knocking or not. Only the fire of chaos and the danger and uncertainty that comes with it move us. God knows this as we are made in his image. He knows us and will never apologize for giving us what we need to face the great issues. Just as He glorified in but did not apologize for the role he’d laid out for His only Son/.The proof of the right... His Son fulfilled it without recrimination while knowing what was to come. Can we do the same?

Finger Lakes FishingThe 11 glacially formed Finger Lakes of central and western

New York are some of the most beautiful and unique lakes found in the state. The lakes; Otisco, Skaneateles, Owasco, Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka, Canandaigua, Honeoye, Canadice, Hemlock, and Conesus Lakes; range in size from Canadice Lake’s 642 acres to the Seneca Lake at 43,342 acres. The

to fish for them. Yellow perch can be found in Canandaigua, Seneca, Cayuga, Skaneateles, Owasco, Honeoye and Otisco lakes. Panfish abound in all the Finger Lakes with Honeoye and Conesus noted for their large-sized fish. For something different, try pickeral fishing on Cayuga (north end), Hemlock, Canadice, and Skaneateles (south end) lakes and pike fishing on Owasco (south end), Cayuga (south end) Seneca, and Conesus. Tiger muskies are also available in Conesus and Otisco lakes
