Overview of Curriculum Area At Shrewsbury College we are committed to providing vocationally relevant arts
education for the creative industries and enabling our students to both enjoy a
creative journey and gain crucial employability skills within their chosen area. We
strive with our students to make the creative journey from student to working
professional achievable and enjoyable. All creative courses provide challenge and
enable our students to both express themselves and understand their work in a
wider context through research and analysis of the work of others. We are
building our visiting lecturer and study visits programme, to provide a
programme of both personal and professional development for all of our
students. In Creative Arts we do recognise that not all of our learners will be
involved in career changing and perhaps have come to Creative Media after a full
working life, for these students we involve them fully in the working life of our
faculty and they provide a great sounding board for some of younger students. A
cultural mix of age’s abilities and outlooks provide for a healthy and dynamic
creative atmosphere that benefits all our learners. We welcome you and look

Overview of the Award – what does the course involve
Edexcel BTEC Higher Nationals are designed to provide a specialist vocational programme, linked to professional body requirements and National Occupational Standards. They offer a strong, sector-related emphasis on practical skills development alongside the development of requisite knowledge and understanding. The qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in their sector and their national recognition by

employers allows direct progression to employment. A key progression path for Edexcel BTEC HNC and HND students is to the second or third year of a degree, or honours degree programme, depending on the match of the Edexcel BTEC Higher National units to the degree programme in question.
The course involves the creative planning and production of moving image media products such as films and animation, an exciting and growing area of the media industries. You will also learn about the media industries and the career development opportunities available to you. This course is validated by Edexcel. Rationale
The Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Creative Media Production (QCF) have been
developed to:
• provide high level training within the general vocational areas of creative media
production
• provide opportunities for specialism within the specific vocational areas of
moving image production, radio production, journalism, and computer games
development and design
• provide learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to gain
employment in the media sector or to progress to an appropriate undergraduate
degree
• provide learners with a qualification that will enable them to gain employment
in the media sector or to progress to an appropriate undergraduate degree
• equip learners with the transferable skills that will enable them to progress and

Programme Aims
Aims of the programme: The Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Creative Media Production (QCF) have been developed to focus on:
• providing education and training for a range of careers in the media sector and its support industries
• providing opportunities for potential workers in the media sector to achieve a nationally recognised level 4 or 5 vocationally specific qualification
• providing opportunities for full-time learners to gain a nationally recognised vocationally specific qualification to enter employment in the media sector or progress to higher education vocational qualifications in media production
• developing the knowledge, understanding and skills of learners in the field of media production
• providing learners with transferable skills that will enable them to progress and move within the media sector
• providing opportunities for learners to focus on the development of higher-level skills in a media context
• providing opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques and attributes essential for successful performance in working life
• providing centres with flexibility to devise and provide programmes of study which capitalise on the strengths of the centre and which meet local needs.
In addition the Pearson Level 5 BTEC Higher National Diplomas in Creative Media Production (QCF) have been developed to focus on:

As this is a primarily practical course, you will have access to industry standard software as well as equipment that will enable you to learn fundamental transferable skills for entering employment in the creative industries. You will build up a portfolio of work that will prove valuable when it comes to applying for University or employment. We have close links with Staffordshire University and Glyndwr University which strengthens the progression routes for our students from HNC/D to Degree level. On successful completion students should be able to: • Be able to select and apply methods and techniques to a variety of media
production outcomes • Be able to use research to inform and develop ideas in response to a media
production problem • Demonstrate their skills through a portfolio of work • Understand the progression options available to them Students completing the HNC can progress on to the HND, University or employment. Those completing the HND can top-up to a full degree by completing a third year at University. Employability TV or film production assistant: starting salary £14, 000 + per year. Starting salaries can be between £14,000 and £16,000 a year. Experienced production assistants can earn between £20,000 and £25,000 a year. Senior production assistant can earn around £30,000 or more. Freelance production assistants are usually paid a fee for each contract. Freelance rates can vary widely, and may be negotiated based on the type of production and your track record. Teaching and Assessment
How will I be taught? We understand that everyone learns differently and for that reason we try to employ a variety of teaching and learning methods. Lectures Lectures are a convenient way of delivering lots of information on a subject; generally speaking a lecture will involve the tutor talking and the learners taking notes. In most cases a lecture will be accompanied by visual reference material such as images or video. Discussion Discussions are a great way to get ideas flowing, they are an exchange of information between the tutor and the learner – remember, you have valuable knowledge that we do not. You can keep a record of discussions to refer to at a later time. Demonstration An effective way to teach a practical skill is to use demonstration. A tutor will show you what to do and you will either follow along step-by-step or do your own version after the demonstration. Practical exercises Completing a practical exercise, usually explained with a handout is a good way to learn practical skills at your own pace. An example of this might be an online tutorial. VLE At Shrewsbury College, we use Moodle to offer online resources and course content. This provides an easy and practical way for you to access materials outside of the College or during independent study time Self-directed study We anticipate that you will need to carry out at least 5 hours of self study each week in order to complete the assignments. During self-study time you may access resources in the SLC and, if there is space, in the media studios.

How will I be assessed? You will be required to complete an assessment for each module of your course.
Assessment on the course will be assignment based. An assignment will address one or more learning outcomes for a unit (and sometimes, multiple units). Each assignment will ask you to carry out tasks that will guide you towards providing evidence for the learning outcomes. A task can take a number of forms, for example you may be asked to produce a written report, an essay, a presentation or a product of some kind (e.g. animation, newspaper layout). An assignment will normally be carried out in your timetabled lessons. You will need to complete your work by the deadline written on the front of the assignment. When you hand in an assignment you will need to complete an assignment cover sheet by signing the declaration at the bottom. The declaration states that all the work you are submitting is your own. It also provides an area for tutor feedback. You will receive feedback at the end of an assignment to inform you of your grade, as well as any areas for improvement. If you do not achieve the criteria set out in an assignment you will be asked to resubmit it with the additional work by a new deadline, usually one week later. If you fail to hand in an assignment by the initial deadline or, if applicable, by a later deadline, your assignment will be referred. This means you will not achieve the learning outcomes for that assignment and therefore may not be able to pass the course. If you are referred in an assignment you will need to complete it in your own time and by an agreed deadline. Any assignments still referred at the end of the year may result in you not being able to continue the course. Please don’t forget, there is support available at the college and tutors and student services staff are here to help you. Student Charter

Learners must achieve a minimum of 120 credits (of which at least 65 must be at level 4) on their programme of learning to be awarded a BTEC Level 4 HNC and a minimum of 240 credits (of which at least 125 must be at level 5 or above) to be awarded at BTEC Level 5 HND.
Learners will be awarded a pass, merit or distinction grade using the points gained through the 75 best credits based on unit achievement.
It is important that you attend sessions to ensure you are able to submit appropriate work for assessment. If you fail to submit by the published deadlines you will be withdrawn from the module and may fail the award.
You should speak with your personal tutor if you are having problems attending or submitting assessment as the College has a policy for extenuating circumstances. The Course Leader will support you in making an application to make a late submission or defer assessment if your personal circumstances allow it. What happens if I fail a unit? All students are entitled to one re-submission opportunity if the work they initially submit is judged to have failed.
However, if the initial work is not covered by extenuating circumstances, and you submit work for the module for a second attempt (called a referral) the maximum mark that can be awarded for re-submission is the threshold pass mark; i.e. 40% grade point 4 for levels 4 and 5.
If the re-submitted failed work or non-submission is covered by a successful extenuating circumstances claim then the re-submitted work is considered ‘as if for the first time’ and can receive its full awarded mark.

Student Services You will have full access to the support facilities offered by the Student Services Department located in the Hub at Shrewsbury College, they can support you in accessing financial support, health services, counselling etc. Their opening hours are Monday to Thursday 8.30 – 7.00pm and Friday 8.30 – 5pm.
