Harken equipment is designed for minimal maintenance. However, some upkeep is required to give the best service and comply with the Harken limited warranty. Keep your equipment clean and free-running by frequently flushing with fresh water. Periodically clean with mild detergent and water solution. Spin sheaves to distribute soap solution evenly. Flush with fresh water. IMPORTANT! Exposure to some teak cleaners and other caustic solutions can result in discoloration of part and is not covered under the Harken warranty.

Frequently inspect shackles and shackle posts for signs of corrosion, cracks, or elongation. When replacing shackles, use the correct Harken parts to maintain the proper strength. Replace line as necessary, taking into consideration the maximum size recommendation.

Replacing Shackle

3. Use the needle nose locking pliers to clamp the head of the threaded post towards the block’s angled side to prevent the post from turning.

7. Screw on the new trunion snap shackle until roll pin holes are lined up. IMPORTANT! Make sure alignment is not ½ turn off.

5. If necessary, use the propane torch to evenly heat the threaded socket area of the trunion shackle to release the old thread locking adhesive. When it is hot enough, unscrew the old trunion snap shackle.

8. Use the hammer to tap the roll pin in place.

4. Try unscrewing the old trunion snap shackle. If it does not turn stop and go to step 5.

6. Slip the threaded post into the block. Put a couple drops of Blue Loctite into the threaded socket on the new trunion snap shackle.

9. Use the drive pin punch to recess the roll pin. Compare each side to make sure the roll pin is evenly recessed.

Turn 1/2 turn either direction to make sure holes line up.

WARNING! Failure to inspect and replace damage metal parts and/or worn or frayed line can cause block or system to break suddenly causing an accident, damage to you vessel, personal injury or death. See www.harken.com/manuals for additional safety information.
