Thermal Performance

Electrical current that is not converted into light at the semi-conductor junction turns into heat and results in increasing temperature that reduces lumen output and LED life. Junction temperature is affected by the ambient temperature surrounding the LEDs, the thermal path junction through the aluminum heat sink, air flow through the unit and the outside ambient temperature.

The HMAO LED luminaire incorporates a cold forged aluminum heat sink providing excellent thermal transfer for the modular chip-on-board LED. Providing both air convection and conduction keeps the LEDs cool ensuring longer life, high delivered lumens over time, and color consistency. No internal fans or alternate cooling devices are required in the HMAO LED as these non-passive systems add complexity and a source of failure long term for outdoor rated LED luminaires.

Holophane HMAO LED luminaires are designed for a minimum of 100,000 hours of maintenance – free operation in a 25C ambient attaining 76 percent of initial lumen output over a 25 year life cycle. (4000 hours/year operation)

Application EfficacyA major benefit of the HMAO LED luminaire is directing the distribution on task, a result of high application efficacy of the luminaire LED chip-on-board modular light engine. In addition, the prismatic glass optics provide overlapping distribution from each LED module eliminating potential dark spots and improving safety. The prismatic glass optics minimize the direct view of source LED, reducing glare and improving visual comfort. The HMAO LED luminaire is virtually maintenance free, a result of the long system life of the LED system with rated life approaching 25 years operation.

The example below illustrates the benefit of the HMAO LED versus a HID system illuminated with the high pressure sodium high mast luminaire in a Port Authority application. The benefit to the customer is that the white light source of the LED provides excellent uniformity, improving visibility within the application space and provides substantial energy savings.

The HMAO LED is designed to replace existing HID luminaires for large area and roadway applications. In addition to the poor color attributes associated with high pressure sodium lighting, lighting levels are decreased due to source lamp lumen depreciation over time, dirt accumulation and lamp and ballast outages. Below is a direct comparison of a Port Application where high pressure sodium luminaires have been in service for 15 years. The HMAO LED offers three lumen packages that allow customer to choose the best option for their particular application to maximize energy savings.
