“Learning is not attained by chance. It must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.” (Abigail Adams)

Mater Education’s Diploma of Nursing Program has been designed by the nursing profession in accordance with, and meets the accreditation standards of, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) and the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector national competency and compliance standards. ENs are first level nurses who practice in many different areas of the health care environment within their identified scope of practice and under the supervision of Registered Nurses.

Diploma of Nursing Program aims The program aims to develop the student’s abilities to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and apply critical-thinking skills to provide quality patient-centred nursing care for patients/clients with varying healthcare requirements as a beginner level enrolled nurse. Our curriculum for the Diploma of Nursing integrates all core competencies of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) National Enrolled Nurse Competency standards. Mater Education’s program ensures the central focus is on enrolled nursing practice and the provision of competent, safe and patient–centred care.

Objectives/Outcomes The major goal within Mater Education’s Diploma of Nursing Program is for each student to demonstrate a satisfactory level of knowledge, skills, attitude, communication and safety in all units of competency. It is expected graduates of the Program will be clinically competent and ready to function as beginning Enrolled Nurses based on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) competency standards.

Teaching and learning strategies used within the Diploma

Our Educators use a variety of methods to deliver essential knowledge and skills. These include -

Lecture style classes – face-to-face delivery Self-directed modules – online delivery via Mater’s Online Virtual Education System

(MOVES) Problem based learning (PBL) tutorials – face-to-face delivery Clinical simulation sessions – face-to-face delivery Vocational / clinical placement

Students learning responsibilities

Full Time Students Learning Responsibilities Mater’s Full Time Diploma of Nursing program is delivered over 3 semesters and each semester has an expectation of 3 days face to face attendance so as to support student learning. To ensure each student has the best learning opportunity it is suggested that for each hour of learning attended in the face to face environment the student must match those hours attending their own reading and studying at home. This indicates a face to face workload of approximately 24 hours face to face per week and an independent study workload of approximately 24 hour per week at home. This totals 48 hours per week of learning. Additional time needs to be set aside for assignments. Assume you will need approximately six hours preparation for every 500 words of assignments (for research, writing and refining drafts).

Part Time Students Learning Responsibilities Mater’s Part Time Diploma of Nursing program is delivered over 6 semesters and each semester has an expectation of 1 day face to face attendance per fortnight to support student learning. There are also additional workshops of 1 – 2 weeks that will require attendance at the end of every semester which will bring all of the skills learnt for the semester together in a staged clinical simulation

Page 21: HLT54115 Diploma of Nursing - Mater Education...Education’s Diploma of Nursing Students, supported by our evidence based curriculum, both educationally and clinically. Our blended

P a g e | 20

To ensure each student has the best learning opportunity it is suggested that the part time student works on each week of learning for at least 10 hours and closely follows their Study and Assessment Guides requirements closely. Additional time needs to be set aside for assignments. Assume you will need approximately six hours preparation for every 500 words of assignments (for research, writing and refining drafts). The responsibility for a good education is shared between students and staff. Mater Education learning and teaching strategies reflect that shared responsibility and are based on the premise that both staff and students benefit from a collaborative learning environment in which students are treated as adults and future professional colleagues. As an adult learner you need to take responsibility for actively participating in your own learning. This includes accessing library resources and electronic resources, utilising study skills and discussing subject issues with relevant staff and being proactive in identifying and meeting your own educational needs. It is also the student’s responsibility to read each subject’s Study and Assessment Guide (SAG) and understand the assessment of the subjects that they have chosen to enrol into. The more time students devote to their study the better the learning experience and outcomes, and the more likely the student will be to gain a positive and relevant exchange from the learning. Therefore the more you put in the more likely you are to achieve success.

Online learning - MoVES Mater Education utilises 5 different teaching and learning methods, one of which is online learning. In this rapidly changing world of technology, access to and use of computers is an important part of any learning experience. Many students will access learning on their phones, IPads, Tablets, laptops or home computer. Others may prefer to, or need to, use computers onsite at Mater. For students who wish to access a computer onsite, Mater has 45 dedicated computers available at the library, designated computer training rooms and the Diploma of Nursing student space. All of these computers have high speed internet connection. Additionally the Diploma of Nursing area has Wi-Fi accessibility for students who wish to study on site but use their own devices. You will be allocated a sign in and a password on commencement of your course. If you lose this password please connect with Mater Education reception in regards to obtaining a new password.

Mater Online Virtual Education System (MoVES) is our online learning platform. Subject content and assessment materials are on MoVES for students to access both onsite and remotely, providing access to study and assessment guides, lecture notes and online assessment.

All students will be given introductory instructions relating to accessing course materials and completing assessments on MoVES. Students will also be given a presentation by our Librarian on how best to use the computer for research.

We acknowledge that students come into our Program with varying levels of experience in the use of computers. This is to be expected and student colleagues have often proven to be good people to lend a helping hand and, it is a great way to get to know people.

It is important to note that our Diploma of Nursing Program is not an online course rather there is an online learning component as a part of the overall training program.

There is always support available – you just need to ask! If students have any concerns they are encouraged to discuss these early with the relevant Educator.

Assessment in the Diploma program It is our responsibility as per ANMAC and VET requirements to gather evidence that our students have the knowledge, ability, skills and behaviours required of an Enrolled Nurse.

How do we assess? Our Educators utilise various methods to assess your level of knowledge and skill in each unit of competency. These can include (but are not limited to) –

Written assignments Problem based learning (PBL) assessment Exams Online questions – multi-choice & short answer Group activity / presentation Simulated Clinical Skill Assessments (CSAs) Vocational Placement – Clinical Performance Appraisal Tool (CPAT) + CSAs

The content and method of assessment will be identified in the relevant Study and Assessment Guide (SAG) and will be provided to students at the beginning of each semester. Students are encourages to discuss or clarify any concerns with the relevant Educator.

Your learning is our priority! We take our responsibility for your learning very seriously. Sometimes people’s behaviour distracts and affects others’ learning. Therefore it is an expectation that all students within our Diploma of Nursing Program will –

Behave in a polite and respectful manner considerate of others learning.

Demonstrate active participation in all class activities.

Silence or turn off mobile phones unless personally approved by Educator or Clinical Tutor prior to class.

Be punctual and present for the entire class.

Complete necessary pre-reading and preparation in readiness for classes.

Dress appropriately and behave in accordance to Student Rules and Mater Health Services policies.

Note: Students will be asked to leave the classroom if behaviour is deemed inappropriate by the Educator.

Student Progression For students to progress into the next semester of either their full time or part time program they MUST have successful results for all semester units of competency. If a student receives an unsuccessful result they will need to meet with the Course Coordinator and relevant Educator to review their overall status and discuss progression options.

Clinical placement Clinical Placement experience is key to consolidation of learning and provides further exposure to professional behaviour required of EN clinicians. Our Diploma of Nursing Program aims to provide all students with a diverse clinical experience within their identified areas of interest and within the scope of the program. What do I need before I start? Students must be deemed to have appropriate knowledge, skills, attitude and safety in their nursing practice prior to being eligible to attend their vocational / clinical placement each semester.

This will include assessment in the simulated clinical environment as well as other theoretical assessments. Students are expected to attend 100% of all clinical simulation sessions provided each week per semester and must be deemed successful in all assessments. Students must also have evidence of current CPR (annual renewal) and First Aid qualifications (three [3] yearly renewal) and be up-to-date with vaccination requirements to attend vocational / clinical placement. Students will also have to show proof of valid Blue Card before attending placement. Further information can be found at http://www.ccypcg.qld.gov.au/bluecard/applications/volunteersandstudents.html Students who are unable to meet the criteria listed above may not be eligible to attend vocational / clinical placement for that semester and therefore would be unable to complete study requirements.

When does clinical placement occur?

The Diploma of Nursing Program incorporates a blend of block placements so as to ensure that 400 hours of Clinical Placement will be achieved by the end of the 18 months / 3 years of learning. Students must be available to attend the required vocational / clinical placement dates and shifts on any day of the week (Monday – Friday) as rostered by the Diploma of Nursing Team. Students are required to complete 120 hours (i.e. 15 shifts) of clinical placement in semester one (1)/ year one (1) and semester two (2)/year two (2) and 160 hours (i.e. 20 shifts) of clinical placement in semester three (3)/ year (3). During their semester three (3)/ year (3) clinical placement hours, each student will undertake elective placements in the area of their chosen speciality elective.

The block placements are scheduled at different times for each semester cohort.

Clinical area allocation and rosters are organised and at the discretion of the Course Coordinator and Vocational Placement Coordinator. In some circumstances the Diploma of Nursing team may need to allocate or re-allocate a student based on their clinical performance and /or other issues that may be affecting their placement.

Specific details including roster dates and times will be discussed at a scheduled pre-briefing prior to commencement of placement. This will assist students with personal planning and will outline the expectations required. Therefore mandatory attendance is required.

To keep our patients safe it is our expectation that all students only practice skills they have been taught and assessed in the simulated environment. If you breach your EN student scope of practice expectation during placement you will be removed from placement on the day of incident. The outcome may result in you being deemed unsuccessful for that placement and semester of study. Nursing is a profession and nurses must look and act professionally at all times. It is an expectation that all students present themselves professionally. Students who do not present themselves (e.g. uniform and personal appearance) or act in an unprofessional manner on placement will be asked to leave the shift and report to the Course Coordinator or delegated Educator. Please refer to Student Rules regarding student general behaviour and dress code. What are the current clinical area options? Mater Adult Hospital

Support for Students

Sometimes students experience personal, academic or clinical challenges that may affect their study. During your educational journey, if you need academic, clinical or emotional support, we can help!

Academic Support Our course is designed to be academically challenging embedded within a supportive learning environment. It provides both theoretical and practical, clinical real-life learning that assists in the transition to a nursing professional. We encourage interactions between you, and your peers, lecturers and tutors. If you need help with knowledge or extra assistance with practicing skills, please seek assistance as soon as practicable. Educators, clinical tutors and clinical facilitators are all here to help you. We have library help as well!

Our Program is designed to ensure all students receive clear feedback about their progress. This is a necessary part of learning and professionally developing. Assessment feedback is provided for both successful and unsuccessful results. Early conversations are encouraged in the instances of unsuccessful outcomes. If extra assistance is required, students often benefit from a formalised and individualised learning plan tailored to the individual student’s learning needs. The Educator or Course Coordinator is able to offer support and guidance. Please be advised that no personal or academic information is provided to anyone other than the student or parent / guardian for those students under the age of 18 years. The key to success is timely access to support! Employee Assistance Program Mater Education is committed to providing professional and personal support to its students. Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a free, confidential and voluntary counselling service available to all Diploma of Nursing students. Further information about this service can be

found in brochures in the student lounge. Pastoral Care is also available to those needing assistance. Supporting all individuals People from all walks of life need care, and people from all walks of life can make exceptional nurses. We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and people with diverse academic, work and life experiences to apply. No matter what your background or life experience we are keen to tailor support to you if needed. We have one-to-one mentorship that we can introduce and if needs arise we can link into our indigenous and ethnic Mater communities for further support. If English is your second language and you need support in this area, it is important to discuss with the Course Coordinator who can provide direction and guidance for English language support.

Registered as an EN

You will be eligible to apply for registration to practice with AHPRA as an EN in your third semester.

There are five (5) simple steps to graduate registration (outlined on the AHPRA website). These include – 1. Apply for registration four (4) to six (6) weeks before completing the course at:

www.ahpra.gov.au/Registration/Graduate-Applications.aspx 2. You will fill out an online application (if eligible) or download an application form. All

applications require some documents to be sent to AHPRA by mail. 3. We will advise AHPRA when 3rd semester students are eligible to graduate. 4. AHPRA finalises assessment, confirms registration, publishes new graduates’ names on the

Register of Practitioners and sends out registration certificates. 5. New graduates registered within their profession’s National Board are eligible to start

working as soon as their name is published on the Register of Practitioners.

Please be aware that there are English languages requirements that you will need to demonstrate as a part of your registration process which primarily includes the requirement for evidence of completion of five (5) years (fulltime equivalent) of education taught and assessed in English. Please go to http://www.ahpra.gov.au/Registration/Graduate-Applications/Graduate-Applications-Supporting-Documentation.aspx for further information. Your registration certificate is an important document which will require annual renewal. It recognises the holder’s status as a nurse and provides evidence to employers and members of the public that they have been appropriately educated and are considered fit and competent to practice nursing.

You are encouraged to review the AHPRA (http://www.ahpra.gov.au/) and NMBA (http://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au/) websites and familiarise themselves with all the criteria for registration.
