The individuals were drawn from a rural environment where the grandparents had also lived and alleles were determined using sequence specific primers. The Burusho reside in the Hunza, Nagar and Yasin Valleys of the Karakoram Mountains in northern Pakistan and they speak Burushaski which some consider as one of the few remaining language isolates. The Burusho claim to have possible origins from four generals in Alexander’s army. However, despite speaking an isolated lan- guage the Burusho genetically resemble their geographical neighbours in Pakistan.
