    An Enthusiastic Start: 2019-20 !

Another wonderful year 2019-20! Other than the heated up “STEM activities” for both students and teachers, another usual event – The “MockExams” in December – gives us a shock this year. As the preparation of the Chemistry and Physics Mock Exam (especially the Venue) started smooth, we could post the application news in early Sept online. What shocks us is the quickly filled up of places for different sessions – the quickest is the 1st session of Chemistry (within a week). At the moment of drafting this news, 3 sessions had been completely filled with lots of enquiries over the phone about the situation. Thanks teachers in supporting the event and hope your students could be better prepared for their DSE with such exercises. • Mail Pack Aug-2019 / P. 3 all teachers to apply as early as possible to ensure the opportunities for their students. A special event for this school year is the last competition related to the IYPT-2019(HK) – “My experience with the Periodic Table” (Note 1) and the due date is 16/10/2019. Though this is the last event for the IYPT organized by the HKASME, we must remind teachers that they could plan and arrange their own IYPT celebrations for their students and / or communities so as to stimulate their learning and teaching with such remarkable context. As for 2020, the International Year is proclaimed as the “IYPH-2020” (International Year of Plant Health). Similar to the IYPT-2019, the official global events have already started (Note 2). Both the IYPT and IYPH could help your teaching with a special contextual base. Whether you like it or not, the International academics are addressing and celebrating the co-ordinated theme(s) in various formats. Hence, why not try to arrange your own activities for the IYPT and / or IYPH and lead your students to an international platform where they could enhance not only their knowledge, but also their 21st Century skills with all other students around the globe. Looking forward to hear from your wonderful ideas and activities with the above contexts. Do remember to check the different deadlines for different activities at www.hkasme.org or email us at [email protected] . The Council Sept. 2019 Notes / References: (Note 1): Official site of IYPT-2019 is www.iypt2019.org Many IYPT activities from all over the World have registered their activities at the site up to Dec-2019. Join them or LEARN from them!

(S-1) International Day for the preservation of the Ozone Layer = 16th Sep!

"As we rightly focus our energies on tackling climate change, we must be careful not to neglect the ozone layer and stay alert to the threat posed by the illegal use of ozone-depleting gases." ...... UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres (16/9/2019). Why International Days or Years for our students?

International days are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and

resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. As our contemporary education is closely linked to social issues, it’s a wonderful opportunity to get students involved in such International Events. This not only pushes students towards a sense of international citizenship, but also have a practical chance for them to think how to be involved with such international task. For international days / years as proposed by the UN, please check at https://www.un.org/en/sections/observances/international-days/ ((===========================================

schools gaining at least 1 top scorer. Amongst them, TWO has the most top scorers (20 in total). They are (i) St. Paul’s Co-educational College and (ii) Queen’s College. Teachers could refer to their “School Report” with all data – including statistics against the Hong Kong population and the global reflecting the overall achievement of the students.

Each student will receive a copy of his results with analysis of all questions (on the back of the certificate) which assist the students in finding out their misconceptions.

The teacher will receive data of his school as well as compared with overall data of Hong Kong. Hence, this is a very good and easy administrated quiz that bring insights about the students' learning potential in the subject. ALL questions are MC (30 in total). ALL questions are syllabus-free -- that is, most ask for comprehensive skills with basic chemical principles (one of the 21st C skills that STEM would like to develop).

Students could choose their own set of paper for the competition (with level higher than his study level). That is, a F.3 student could take a paper at F.4 level. This also serves as one award that students could be used for JUPAS applications.

The actual testing date for the ANCQ-2020 will be around JULY in 2020 at your School. Details will be posted in our website (www.hkasme.org) and emailed to schools when all documents are ready.

Past Papers [various years & levels, Chi / Eng versions] are available

    Why addressing “Plant Health” globally?

Healthy plants constitute the foundation for all life on earth, making up the oxygen we breathe and over 80% of the food we eat. Plant health is the key to the sustainable intensification of agriculture to feed the growing global population by 2050. Thus, recognition, advocacy, and support for the promotion of plant health is of paramount importance if the international community is to guarantee plant resources for a food secure world based on stable and sustainable ecosystems. With this in mind, in July 2017, the FAO Conference approved a draft resolution requesting the General Assembly of the United Nations to consider declaring 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH

APS (The American Phytopathological Society) has coordinating an official website (see above)

for promoting and organizing activities related to the IYPH-2020. They would like the assistance of all related parties in identifying opportunities to reach audiences about the importance of plant health. To initiate the process, ten monthly themes (listed below) have been identified within which many different messages can be crafted.

IYPH 2020 Themes: Plant Health for a Healthy Planet Plant Health in a Changing Climate Plant Health for Urban Gardens/Plant Health in your Backyard Plant Health for Sustainable Forests Plant Health to Combat World Hunger Plant Health and Bugs Healthy Plants for Healthy Humans Healthy Plants and your Kitchen Table Technological Advances for Plant Health Plant Health and Treasure Troves from the Past
