Some porosity, but excellent centering and very good strike. The types silvery, but with some dark toning around the edges. This coin has a stern 3/4 facing Hermes with penetrating eyes. VF+ $8500

This lovely piece is ex BCD collection but was not in the printed catalogs. It has a tremendously good strike and lovely toning. A superb example. Mint State $800

crested Attic helmet. Rx: AΘΕ Owl standing r., head front, olive twig behind; all within incuse square. Struck in high relief, with nearly the full crest visible. Small, inconsequential nick on owl’s eye on the reverse. This denomination is less common than the tetradrachm and when available is highly sought after. VF+ $3400

Owl standing r., head facing, with olive sprig and crescent behind. This coin has it all, great strike, perfect centering and a full crest on the obverse to match. The Athena head fits nicely on the slightly irregular flan, so we find ourselves with a near perfect coin. Mint State $2650

An attractive Corinthian stater, the obverse slightly doublestruck, but with the uncommon and quite exciting scorpion-fish symbol well struck up and clear on the reverse, and with some iridescent toning around the head of Athena. aEF / EF $1100

Rx: Homer seated l. holding scroll, between mint name and magistrates’ names Alschrion and Diogenos. Smyrna claimed to be the birthplace of Homer. Minor off-centering. An interesting reverse type with Homer. EF $225

Kayhan-1019. Obv: Confronted foreparts of lion and bull. Rx: Two-part incuse. The coinage of Croesus has always been a fascinating series as it is the first bimetallic coinage minted in the Greek world. The coinage has a range of denominations from of a heavy gold stater down to a 1/96 silver stater. Our coin, a 1/6 stater, is small at 11mm but has a wonderfully struck lion and bull.

Obv: Palm branch upright within wreath; around, “Shimon Prince of Israel.” Rx: Lyre with five strings; around, “Year One of the Redemption of Israel”. Black patination with some light dust in areas. Normally found in less than desirable condition, this coin is extremely well-preserved and is a superb example. EF for issue $750

Issued in Jerusalem after Antiochus captured the city. “The lily of Jerusalem appears on several other Hasmonean coins, and continues as a symbol of Jerusalem for some time” (Hendin, p. 161) . VG $100

Rx: PONTIF - MAXIM Livia seated l. holding reversed spear and branch, her throne has decorated legs and rests on socle formed by three parallel lines at l., but only two at center and r. A scarce variant of the Tribute Penny, with Livia holding spear not scepter and a socle (“three lines”) below her throne. Slightly off-center but lovely example. EF $1250

Obv: C CAESAR DIVI AVG PRON AVG P M TR P III P P around, PIETAS in exergue, Pietas seated l. resting elbow on statuette of Spes and holding patera. Rx: DIVO - AVG and S - C across field, Caligula sacrificing at altar before temple of Divus Augustus; he is accompanied by one attendant leading up sacrificial bull and another standing behind him holding patera; temple rests on high base, has six columns, numerous figures in pediment and on roof, and is garlanded. Soon after his accession, Caligula dedicated the temple of Divus Augustus in the Roman Forum that Tiberius had almost completed. TR P III is the rarest date for this type; TR POT is common, TR P IIII just scarce. With TR P II no bronzes were struck. The rarest date for this interesting historical type. Little worn, but with extensive corrosion and porosity. VG $575

The other known specimen, acquired by the British Museum in 1936 and published in the Supplement to BMC Alexandria, is from the same obverse die as our coin, but from a different reverse die, with different placement of the date, L Θ together in left field rather than L left and Θ right. Dattari-3815, a tetradrachm with the Aequitas standing type in Year 9, is also from the same obverse die as the two Tyche seated coins: see Dattari (1901), pl. III, 3815. Alexandrian tetradrachms of Lucilla as a class are very rare: only four specimens in Dattari/Savio; two in Oxford and two in BMC with the Supplement; one each in Cologne, Curtis, and CoinArchives Pro; none in Berk photofile.
