Hitting the High Notes in Music
GMS band members are excited to perform their music
Recently, Gainesville Middle School 7th and 8th grade bandsparticipated in the annual Georgia Music Educators AssociationLarge Group Performance Evaluations in Athens. This assessment isvery similar to the Georgia Milestones for academic assessment, butit is for the evaluation of music programs instead.
Certified state-assigned judges listened to the groups perform aprepared program of three musical selections on stage and thenallowed them to perform a sight-reading selection that band membershad never seen before. Each judge then assigned a score from 5 to 1(1 being the highest), and the average was used to determine eachband's overall score.
This type of performance evaluation is the Ultimate SummativeAssessment, showcasing not only the daily preparations that thestudents have made, but what they can do without prior preparation(such as sight-reading). Both GMS bands earned the highest possiblerating of 1 or Superior from all four judges, for an overall rating of 1(Superior). The bands are under the leadership of band director CraigBailey.
Congratulations to these fine young musicians for representingGainesville Middle School extremely well at the highest level

Minds Make Maps Using Latest App
Mapping is made fun through technology
Gainesville Exploration Academy students have been creative throughthe use of technology! An app called Mindmup 2.0 was downloadedto the students' computers, allowing them to design their own mappingprojects.
The fourth grade classes designed Constitution Chronologieshighlighting important dates and why these events were significant toour country's Constitution. Fifth graders designed the six majorkingdoms, providing examples of each major group. The third gradeclasses mapped the Georgia Habitats utilizing illustrations andexamples of animals and plants relating to those regions in theirprojects.
