Sending Multi-Leg OTM
Shipments to EBS…Finally!
Project Initial State• OTM is integrated with multiple ERPs
• Other ERPs can handle multiple OTM
Shipments per ERP Delivery
• EBS R12 allows for only one OTM
Shipment for one EBS Delivery

EBS 1
Business Requirements• OTM needs to send actual freight carriers to
R12 for printing on required shipping
documents
• In order to comply with sales freight term
requirements, freight costs for all shipping
legs must be recorded individually
7
Standard OTM to EBS Integration
• Out of the box EBS/OTM integration flow
allows for only one OTM Shipment per one
EBS Delivery
• When multiple OTM Shipments are sent for
a single EBS Delivery, the existing
Shipment is overwritten by the next

ActualShipment
Potential Solution – First Leg
• Approach: only send the first leg of a
multi-leg Shipment
– Pros: First leg carrier is correct for
reporting purposes
– Cons: No ability to capture freight
from any subsequent Leg
9
Potential Solution – Sell Side
• Approach: Build Sell Side Shipment to
capture all actual freight costs
– Pros: Ability to capture actual freight
from all Legs
– Cons: Actual carrier is not captured for
shipping documents
10
Solution – Multi-leg Interface
• Background: In a non-OTM integrated
environment, EBS allows for multiple
Trips per Delivery
• Approach: Modify system code to
leverage this existing EBS functionality
– Pros: First leg carrier is correct for
reporting purposes and system can
capture actual freight for all legs
– Cons: Lengthy development and testing
cycle while building custom EBS package
11
Solution Details – EBS
• Challenge: Identify and overcome the limiting elements with the
EBS-OTM interface
– The standard EBS package that processes OTM integration is called
WMS_TMS_RELEASE. When this package processes a Planned
Shipment transaction from OTM, it will unassign any existing Trips in
EBS, and if the Shipment ID is different, it creates a new Trip.
– Changed the standard package to look for a flag on the Shipment from
OTM. This flag tells EBS whether to create a new Trip or append an
additional one.
12
Solution Details – OTM
• Challenge: Provide enough information in the standard Planned
Shipment interface to allow EBS to process multi-leg moves
– For a multi-leg move, flag the first Shipment as “new” and subsequent
shipments as “append”
– Batch OTM Planned shipment transactions to EBS so all Shipments for a
Delivery are sent within the same OTM transmission
– Sequence Shipments to go in order from the first leg to the last leg
– Add intermediate Locations for ports, pool points, cross docks, terminals,
and airports. These Locations are also set up in EBS. The EBS
Location ID is a reference number on the OTM Location.
13
Solution Details – BizTalk
• Approach: To transfer the planned shipments from OTM to EBS in
the right format for EBS to process
– Substitute EBS location ID for the OTM location gid on intermediate
locations.
– Run in a single thread to post transactions in the same order the
transactions are generated in the OTM transmission.
– Wait to load the next record until the first record has been accepted.
14
Solution Details – Error Handling
• Check to see if Intermediate Locations were set up correctly
• Validate REVNUM reference number to insure against Order version
clash

EBS Transactions
Ship Confirmation is performed on the Trip instead of the Delivery

• Intermediate Locations are

Ocean from US Port to Foreign Port
Inland Dray from Foreign Port to Customer
• Final Destination is often an
intermediate Location
depending on INCO terms
OTM Order Movements
• Order Releases can share Shipments
• 2 drays (green) are combined into a single vessel (maroon) and
handling (pink) shipment
20
Lessons Learned
• Testing with an actual process is important: initial tests all had
shipments planned at one time, so shipment order seemed to be the
right sequence. With the actual process, the dray leg may be
consolidated or re-planned with an out-of-sequence shipment ID.
• EBS stops accepting charges after “Ship Confirm” where export
charges keep accumulating until final delivery.
• Export process has longer lead and delivery times. Multiple
deliveries or unintended delivery deletes need to be monitored.
