Warmer rooms. Steaming showers. When your home has natural gas, every day can be the ultimate housewarming. Natural gas offers exceptional comfort, convenience and energy savings year round.

Faster heating. A natural gas furnace warms a home faster with heat up to 25 degrees warmer than electric heat pumps.

Abundant hot water. A natural gas water heater heats water about twice as fast as most electric models, and provides faster recovery and seemingly endless supply.

Higher efficiency. Natural gas furnaces and water heaters are more energy efficient, economical to operate and durable compared to electric models.

Come visit Liberty Point in the Town of Port Royal, SC and see the energy advantage of natural gas. Visit sceg.com/value or call 1-866-523-8242 to learn more.

mAy business news:

Should your business offer trade credit? If you’re among those who consider it a bad business move to provide a product or service before it’s paid for, you’re not alone. Yet, there are several advantages.

“If a customer has to choose between a business that offers flexible payment terms and one who doesn’t, given the service and price is comparable, they will always choose the one extending credit,” according to Meredith Wood, director of community relations at Funding Gates, CRM for receivables management.

Not only can trade credit help you win a customer, it can also help increase the volume of your sales and build your reputation. You are telling people your business is in a good position financially and that can come in handy when applying for loans and looking for suppliers to buy from.

When it comes to doing business, having to grow fast to meet demand is a good problem to have! Yet, launching a successful startup is a tremendous amount of work and many new businesses experience growing pains and challenges along the way.

Kit Hickey, co-founder of e-commerce apparel company Ministry of Supply, has found that assigning leaders individual areas of the business to champion is helpful when facing fast growth.

“We all live and breathe the mission and we are intentional about hiring people who fit both our brand and our culture” said Hickey. Being able to adapt quickly and acting fast in real time is key to long term success.

big look At smAll business success: Q&A: JAMES M. wORdSwORtH

It’s no secret that hard work and a solid business plan are the backbone of every small business success. But what does it take to get to the next level?

As we get ready to salute local small business during Chamber Small Business Week, James M. Wordsworth, chairman, Small Business Council for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and featured speaker at our 2013 Small Business of the Year Awards Luncheon, shares his views on what defines an outstanding small business in today’s market.

Wordsworth, owner of eight small businesses, has been recognized as Chamber Business Person of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Restaurateur of the Year, and his steakhouse is also a four-time winner of the national Good Neighbor award for community service. He was founding chairman of Loudon County and Fairfax County CVBs and the Virginia Hospitality and Travel Association.

cbm: You started out with one business, J.r.’s steakhouse in 1974. today, you’re the owner of eight small businesses. Was there a defining moment when you knew it was time to expand?

WorDsWortH: Yes. If you know your business absolutely, it’s not a guess. That really prepares you. When the demand for our product exceeded our physical capabilities, I felt we had the management capacity to expand to a different location. I love small business, I really do. The secret to small business is cash flow.

cbm: How has the hospitality and tourism sector been a strong factor to your growth?

WorDsWortH: Hospitality and food defines the society that surrounds you. If you lead with reputation, you have to be your best. The hospitality industry employs over 12 million people and has grown into so many different areas, culinary, management, marketing. It’s exciting every day, the people change, the opportunities change, there’s nothing that excites me more.

cbm: What are the top three qualities that set an outstanding small business apart from other business models?

WorDsWortH: Attitude, competence and consistency.

cbm: How important is it for business owners to get involved with their community?

WorDsWortH: It’s everything. We are one of the leading groups in the Washington metropolitan area for that. It’s very enriching, makes your life fuller and your community stronger.

cbm: How can member businesses make best use of their u.s. chamber membership?

WorDsWortH: Get involved. There is so much available on the national level, so much talent, all there to further and protect US business and commerce. Also, being involved with your local chamber is the best marketing you can do. You have an opportunity to meet people and get a hands-on touch with representatives of your community.

cbm: if you could offer small business owners one word of advice, what would it be?

WorDsWortH: Believe. If you believe in yourself and your idea and believe there is a market for it and you can be the best– you will succeed.

“In the face of high-stakes politics and difficult choices, legislators from both parties provided America’s job creators with a strong voice in Congress,” said Thomas J. Donohue, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber. “This award recognizes these men and women for consistently demonstrating their support for pro-growth policies.”

The Chamber’s prestigious Spirit of Enterprise Award, in its 25th year, is given annually to members of Congress based on key business issues outlined in the Chamber publication How They Voted. Members who support the Chamber’s position on at least 70% of those votes qualify to receive the award.
