Ancient Times to Middle Ages

• Ancient Egyptian women used kohl to blacken their lashes and upper lid as well as decorated their eyes by applying a dark green color to their lower lid.

• Ancient Egyptians used copper and lead ore to create the world’s first cosmetics.

• The women of Rome used burnt matches to darken their eyes, berries to stain their lips and young boys' urine to fade their freckles.

• The popularity of pale skin made many European women cut and bleed themselves to achieve it.

15th Century: Renaissance • The upper class ladies of

northern Europe would pluck their hairlines to make their foreheads seem higher.

• In Italy, blond hair was a sign of beauty and high class. As a result, women attempted to dye their hair by using bleach, saffron or onion skin dye, or sitting under the sun for hours.

• The ideal beauty of this time period had a more curvaceous figure.

16th century: Elizabethan

• Queen Elizabeth set many of the trends during this era. Women would try to recreate her naturally pale complexion and red hair. To do this, they would use white powder (ceruse/white lead – poisonous) along with red wigs.

18th Century• In the early 18th century,

women used to have their hair trim, crimped or curled, powdered and decorated with garlands or bows. However, coiffures that sometimes stood 3 feet tall as well as extravagantly decorated with feathers, ribbons and jewels became the new fashion by the 1770’s. Then by the 1780’s people were against extravagance and formality so they had their hair formed in a loose mass of curls.

19th Century: Victorian

• Women advocated a modest and natural beauty which means less use of cosmetics.

• By the 1840’s, women had their hair oiled and smoothed down over the temples with long curls at the side or a heavy knot of curls/plaits in back.

1920’s: Roaring Twenties

• Women had their hair cut into a bob, waved or shingled.

• Heavy use of make-up went back into fashion. Women started plucking their eyebrows and penciling them in as thin arches as well as painting their lips a bright red.

1940’s

• More feminine hairstyles became popular again.

• For the first time, tanned skin became the symbol of high class.

1950’s

• Heavy eyeliner, a pale complexion and intensely colored lips was fashionable.

• Women went to the salon to get their hair teased, styled, sculpted and sprayed to become a perfect form of curls, waves and bouffants.

1960’s

• Women opted for a more practical and short haircut or long, straight hair.

• By the end of the 1960’s and after the hippie movement, cosmetics were completely rejected and the women go back to the natural, wild look.

• Skinnier women became the standard of beauty.

1980’s

• Pop popularized a style that included heavy makeup with vibrant neon colors and intentionally messed-up and off-colored hair.

• The more conservative “preppy" look was also in which popularized the traditional short hairstyles for women.

Present Day

• Today's trend includes the more natural look with a blend of styles from the past.
