History of the Faculty of Mechanical EngineeringThe Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Belgrade University is theoldest and biggest higher education and scientific institution in Serbiawithin the field of mechanical engineering.

Short historical review of the development of mechanical engineeringeducation(from high school to faculty):

19.06.1846 The School of Engineering was founded (at the level of secondaryeducation lasting 3 years) within the competence of the Ministry of Interior Works(not within the Lyceum).15.09.1853 Within the Lyceum (lasting 3 years) 3 department were founded,one of which was the Technical Department, so the education of engineers at thefaculty level started in Serbia;24.09.1863 The Lyceum was renamed into the Grand School, the studieslasted 4 years, and the faculties were founded out of the departments, whereby

the Technical Faculty was founded.

Short historical review of the development of faculty mechanicalengineering until the foundation of the separated faculty of mechanicalengineering:

Teaching and education at the higher education level within the field ofmechanical engineering started on 20.12.1873, when the subject Mechanics andMechanical Science was introduced at the proposal of the Academic Council ofthe Grand School, according to the Changes and Amendments of the Law on theTechnical Faculty; the basic reason for that was the proposal for building the

railway.19.01.1880 According to the Decision of the National Parliament, the subjectwas separated into two subjects: Theoretical Mechanics and |MechanicalScience. Klericontinued teaching Mechanics, but there was a need for full-timeprofessor in Mechanical Science.24.11.1887Svetozar Zoribecame the professor, who was the head of theProfessors Committee at the Mechanical Engineering Department until he wasretired in 1925.06.01.1897 The Technical Faculty introduced three departments one of whichis Mechanical- Technical Department.30.09.1900 The Department was officialy renamed into: the Department for

Mechanical Engineers.27.02.1905 The Grand School was declared the University, and apart from thepreviously established faculties (The Faculty of Law, The Faculty of Philosophyand the Techical Faculty), some new faculties were added Theological Facultyand the Faculty of Medicine.1912-13 The Balcan Wars disturbed the work of the University and on1914-18, during the First World war, It was completely terminated.1919. The University was open again;

groups; having finished four years of studies and made graduation work, one wasto earn a title of an Engineer of Mechanical Engineering (university qualification);1962. Even a third educational level was established Masters Studies lastingtwo years, as well as specialized studies lasting one year; the titles of a Master ofTechnical Scineces, as well as a Specialist were to be earned by completing and
