HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT

The establishment of a college for the Coalinga Union High

School District was proposed in the spring of 1932. The

official beginning of the Coalinga Extension Center of Fresno

State College dates from October 3, 1932. In September

1941, Coalinga Junior College became an independent

unit under the direction of the Governing Board of the

Coalinga Union High School District. Construction of a new

campus on Cherry Lane near the northern limit of the City of

Coalinga was begun on October 3, 1955, and the buildings

were occupied on September 13, 1956.

In November of 1961, the voters of Coalinga Union High

School District approved the formation of a separate junior

college district, and in June of 1962, the voters of Lemoore

High School District voted to annex to the college district, as

did voters of Riverdale and Tranquillity High School Districts

in December of 1962. Effective July 1, 1969, the official

name of the college was changed to West Hills College in

keeping with the nature of the expanded district.

HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT

West Hills Community College District has served the educational needs of the San Joaquin Valley’s west side for over eight decades. We

encompass a 3,464 square mile region that includes portions of five surrounding counties: Fresno, Kings, Madera, Monterey and San Benito.

Since our establishment in 1932, we have had many renditions of our brand identity. The progression of the logos below represent our rich

history in the surrounding areas that we serve, and continues to show our ability to move our vision forward and continually adapt to the

The Meaning Behind the Logo

The West Hills College Lemoore logo is the most visible and

recognizable element of our identity.

Our logo includes a contemporary version of the Central Valley

landscape that surrounds us. The logo as a whole symbolizes

the great San Joaquin Valley, a geographic area unique to the

world, served by a group of talented professionals dedicated

to teaching and improving the lives of students and the

communities we serve.

Within the icon, lush green fields symbolize life, growth and

perseverance of our communities. The water represents the

California Aqueduct that brought transformation to the region,

as the college experience brings opportunity to students. The

sun signifies strength, while the foothills stand for stability.

Below the icon is an updated typographical treatment of our

name that reflects our commitment to move our vision forward.

LO G O

WEST HILLS COLLEGE LEMOORE LOGO

The West Hills College Lemoore logo is an official symbol, any alteration, distortion, re-creation, translation, or misuse is strictly prohibited. The

logo includes both the icon and the logotype. It must be used on all district digital and/or printed materials. Guidance for the logo usage is

shown in detail within this guide. The logo may not appear in any arrangement not shown within this guide. A number of digital file formats are

available (jpg, pdf, tif, ,eps, ai). Each file format is optimized for a variety of applications, both print and on-screen communications. Do not re-

create the logo under any circumstances. Specific Pantone colors are also referenced in this guide.

WEST HILLS COLLEGE LEMOORE LOGO

In 1962, voters in Lemoore and Avenal voted to become part

of the West Hills Community College District. Riverdale and

Tranquillity joined the district in 1963. Coalinga College began

offering classes in Lemoore in 1964. In 1971, the pre-release

program was developed to serve sailors at Naval Air Station

Lemoore. In 1979, the district purchased land for Kings County

Center and construction began in 1981. Construction began on

the current West Hills College Lemoore campus in 2001 after

the land was donated by the Pedersen and Semas families. The

doors to the Lemoore campus on College Avenue and Bush

Street opened in 2002. The district serves more than 6,000

students each semester.

There are three versions of our logo, the Primary Logo

(stacked), the Secondary Logo (horizontal) and the Alternate

Logo (horizontal). Either version is acceptable. The space

requirements of a project will determine the appropriate

version.

The Primary Logo works best when it can be centered and

floated with a generous amount of margin space, such as on

the cover of a formal communication.

The Secondary and Alternate Logos work well in tight

horizontal spaces, such as in online banners and other projects

with limited depth.

The legibility and distinction of our college logo is very

important. To ensure that the logo is highly visible, always

separate it from its surroundings.

The area of isolation, or clear space, surrounding the logo

should equal the height of the “W” in “WEST HILLS”

Do not allow any other graphic element to penetrate this

area of isolation.

Never reproduce the logo smaller than the

minimum size.

These minimum sizes apply to all College logos,

Accurate color reproduction is crucial to the perception of

the West Hills College Lemoore brand. These are standards

for reproducing colors so they will always look consistent, no

matter where they appear.

The color chart indicates the colors by their Pantone Matching

System (PMS) number along with a corresponding formula for

electronic reproduction (RGB).

These colors should be employed throughout our

communications and are equivalent to the PANTONE numbers

listed in the table below.

Four-Color Process (also known as full-color printing):

Refer to the CMYK values shown.

Spot Color: Refer to the Pantone numbers shown.

Desktop Publishing (such as Microsoft Word or Microsoft

Powerpoint): Refer to the RGB values shown.

Website/online: Refer to the RGB or Hexadecimal values

shown.

The PANTONE and CMYK values provided can be used on both

coated and uncoated paper when printing. Although variations

in color will occur, these values match the brand colors as

closely as possible. For applications in color systems not

included here, use the PANTONE values for color matching.

An electronic user template has been created in PowerPoint®. Use

this template to easily create PowerPoint presentations. As with

any large-format medium, the fewer words, the more effective

the message. Follow the layout style shown, and create the

presentation using clean, uncluttered pages.

Marketing Approvals – External and internal documents, including flyers, posters, brochures, banners, etc., for college-

wide announcements, community events, student events, and special events require marketing involvement and

approval. Please make sure to include marketing staff in your planning meetings well in advance (at least a month) to

ensure ample time to develop materials.

Internal materials that include simple flyers or announcements to students or staff, that do not require photos or creative

design, do not need to be approved by marketing. The branded “Microsoft Word template” provided by marketing must

be used for this type of flyer or announcement.

Marketing Requests – The marketing request form can be found in the portal under the Marketing team site. This form

will allow you to select what type of marketing efforts you would like the marketing department to produce for your

announcement or event.

Approved Vendors – All vendors must work directly with the marketing department to ensure they are using the

appropriate graphics and that all artwork is approved before finalizing projects. Make sure your vendors communicate

with marketing before starting a project to ensure they are using the right logo and graphics and eliminate having to

redesign materials and increase production costs and time.

Promotional Materials – All designs for promotional materials must be approved by marketing.

Graphic Design – All design requests are handled by the district’s marketing department. The person submitting the

request may indicate that they would like one of our external designers to create materials but all communication with

graphic designers is handled by the marketing department.
