 One Hundred Years of the Presence of Members of the Sons of the American Revolution in Fayetteville and Fort Bragg NC (1912‐2016) 

   Some noteworthy Compatriot names have come out of Fayetteville NC.  Compatriot Herbert Lutterloh (NC SAR #51 – 8/5/1912) (1859‐1913), descendant of COL James Bonner, was the 1st NCSSAR Fayetteville Compatriot. He is buried in Lot #22 at Cross Creek #1 Cemetery. Jacob Franklin Highsmith, M.D. (NC SAR #243 ‐ 4/30/1928) founded the Highsmith‐Rainey Specialty Hospital in 1901 with Dr. William T. Rainey. William Lee Ramsey (NC SAR #805 – 11/7/1946) organized Le Marquis de Lafayette Chapter in 1968. COL Franklin Rogers Sibert (NC SAR #930 – 7/28/1953) (1914‐1990) was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.  James Terry Sanford (NC SAR #1132 – 8/31/1965) became NC Governor (1961‐1965), Duke University President (1969‐1985), Presidential Candidate in 1972 & 1976, and NC US Senator (1987‐1993). Sanford parachuted into France with the 517th Parachute Infantry Regiment and subsequently fought in the Battle of the Budge. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his bravery and wounds and attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant in WWII.    Le Marquis de Lafayette Chapter was organized by William Lee Ramsey, manufacturer’s agent, in December 1968 and within fifteen months the Chapter hosted the NCSSAR State Convention on April 10, 1970. Ramsey became the 33rd NCSSAR President on the last day of the Convention. He was killed in an auto accident less than three months later in Greenville on 5 July 1970 ((1895‐1970).  Prior to the Convention, Theodore Louis Spilman, Jr., master printer at Worth Printing, was installed as the 2nd Chapter President. At the State Convention in April, he was elected the NCSSAR Secretary‐Treasurer. Compatriot Spilman served on the Cumberland County Board of Education from 1974 thru 1986 as member and chairman. Two years prior to the chapter’s chartering in 1968 and two years afterwards three compatriots a year were being recruited as Chapter members.     William Ramsey’s SAR ancestor was LT Jonathan Taylor, while his son William Lee Ramsey, Jr. NC SAR#1168 – 12/15/1967) used his mother, Dorothy Miller, to arrive at his Revolutionary War ancestor, COL Owen Kenan.    Other known presidents of the Chapter were Dr. Samuel J. Calvert (1993‐1994), VA Hospital, and Carl A. Barrington, Jr. (1995‐1996), Fayetteville Defense Lawyer on the right. The NCSSAR records point out that the 1983 Annual Convention was held in Fayetteville at the Bordeaux Motor Inn. The son of the 1983 State President Rev. Walser H. Allen, Jr. stated on the phone to this writer that his father was a dedicated member of the Lower Cape Fear Chapter in Wilmington and he thought they chose Fayetteville as their convention site because of its central location.  

Le Marquis de Lafayette Chapter has been active and inactive a number of times with missing records, but the September 2000 issue of The Old North State stated “After years of inactivity, Joe Harris ‘took the bull by the horns’ and got the compatriots to re‐activate …” and the article continues, “At a meeting on May 2, 2000 Joe was elected President of the re‐organized chapter.”  New officers for 

the May 2000 to May 2002 Term included President LTC (Ret.) Joe E. Harris, VP Holt Felmet, 

S/T Larry Koonce, Chaplain A. Clark Wiser, Genealogist  Bill Powell, and Historian Carl Barrington. On August 17, 2000, a program on “The Life and Times of the Marquis and Marquise de Lafayette”, by Dr. Elizabeth and Dr. Frank Day of Raleigh, was well received. The 1st Wreath Laying Ceremony at King’s Mountain National Military Park was performed by Joe Harris in 2000. President Harris also established a working relationship with the local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 2001,

notable chapter firsts included the 1st sponsored Grave Marking Ceremony on August 5, 2001, the 1st published newsletter,   1st Chapter and NCSSAR Outstanding JROTC Award went to Cadet LTC Kalyn Eidschun of Westover High School (She also received the NSSAR most Outstanding JROTC Award for 2001), and the 1st published article “History of the NC Militia” (9/2001) in “The Old North State” by Joe Harris. The chapter recruited a record 17 new members to go with the 10 initial members for a total membership of 27 in 2001. Three compatriots were added in 2002 for a total of 30. The Chapter received the NCSSAR Membership Growth Streamer for 2001. 

   In 2002, the 1st visits to Cowan’s Ford and Moore’s Creek Bridge Battlefield occurred, the 1st Good Citizenship Awards were given to Ms. Martha Duell and Mr. Bruce Daws and 1st SAR War Service Medals were given to Frank Horton, Richard Bishop, and Richard  Bickford. Joe Harris received the Meritorious Service Medal from the State Convention for his work in re‐organizing the chapter.   

Chapter officers elected for the May 2002/May 2004 Term included President Steve Pittard, VP Lloyd Lietz, Secretary Dick Bickford, Treasurer Larry Koonce, Chaplain Clark Wiser, 

Genealogist/Registrar Frank Horton, and Historian  Richard Bishop. The 1st Flag Retirement Ceremony was sponsored by the local chapters of the SAR and DAR in conjunction with the F.I.L.I. on the F.I.L.I. Parade Field under the guidance of Richard Bishop in 2002. Then the Chapter co‐sponsored the Ceremony for the Liberty Point Resolves on June 28th. The Chapter was also represented at Ramsour’s Mill Observance and The Fayetteville Memorial Day Parade. The “Valley Forge Program” at the HQS of 

the Cumberland County Library was held on October 15th and it quickly became the annual Revolutionary War Patriotic Event with Frank Horton leading the way. The 1st sponsored Site Wreath Laying Ceremony was held at King’s Mountain National Park on October 7th. Frank Horton and Joe Harris attended the Annual 112th National Congress in Nashville TN. Cadet Charles Odell became the Chapter’s outstanding cadet. James Van Ness gave an informative talk on “The Hessian Soldiers during the Revolutionary War” at the November 14th meeting. The Chapter participated in the Veteran’s Parade. Total year end membership for 2002 came to 32. 

 In 2003, the Chapter participated for the 1st time in the Wreath Laying Ceremonies at the Battle 

of Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse. The re‐charted Chapter hosted the State Convention at the Radisson Prince Charles Hotel, Fayetteville, on March 28‐30th. State elected officers included Area VP Joe Harris, Secretary Frank Horton, and Chaplain Clark Wiser from Le Marquis de Lafayette Chapter. Chapter Historian Richard Bishop received 1st place in the NCSSAR competition for best Chapter Scrapbook. Joe Harris and Frank Horton became George Washington Fellows. The Chapter co‐hosted the 1st meeting of the Halifax Resolves Chapter and the Halifax Grave Marking Ceremony for Joseph Montfort on April 12th. On September 13th, the Chapter performed its first Fayetteville Grave Marking Ceremony for Capt. James Gee, a signer of the Liberty Point Resolves. Chapter members Joe Harris and Frank Horton attended the Pole and Flag Raising Ceremonies at the Freedom Memorial Park on December 7, 2003.

One new compatriot Charles Ingram was inducted during 2003, while Forbes Lee Wallace, Jr. and Walter W. Brewster passed away. This left the chapter with 34 members.  

 

  Chapter officers elected  to the May 2004/May 2006 Term included President LTC (Ret.) Frank Horton, VP Bobby Henderson, Secretary Bob Jackson, Treasurer Warren Jackson, Historian 

Richard Bishop, Genealogist/Registrar Frank Horton, and Sergeant‐At‐Arms Waverley McLeod. The Chapter participated in the May Patriot’s Day Event at Alamance Battleground for the 1st time and Joe Harris & Frank Horton attended the 2004 Annual 114th National Congress. Carl A. Barrington, Jr., a noted Fayetteville criminal lawyer, passed away on March 24th, 2005. He served as President of the Chapter from May 1994 to May 1996 and later as Historian. At the 2005 State Convention, Joe E. Harris, Frank Horton, A. Clark Wiser, G. Steven Pittard were elected NCSSAR President, Secretary, Chaplain, and Area VP, respectively. Horton and Pittard became George Washington Fellows. 15 JROTC Medals and certificates were presented to area High School cadets. Eagle Scout Chase Pitillo and Cadet Elizabeth Owens of Terry Sanford High School were winners at the State Convention. MAJ Wallace Bradsher and LT Dan Jutson were awarded War Service Medals at the May 12 meeting. Liberty Point Chapter Regent Ginny Powers of the DAR was awarded the Martha Washington Medal by President Frank Horton for her support of Chapter activities. The Chapter took part in the Ramsour Mill Historic Site Celebration and the Jacob Ramsour Grave Marking Ceremony in Lincolnton NC on June 11th, 2005..The Chapter participated for the 1st time at Buford’s Massacre in South Carolina and Joe Harris was present for the Yorktown Celebration. Harris, Horton, Pittard, and Wiser attended the Annual 115th National Congress in July. Steve Pittard received the Carl F. Bessent Award for NSSAR Best Single Sheet Chapter Newsletter in the Nation for 2004‐2005. Steve became the editor and publisher of “The Old North State” in the Fall of 2005. A Grave Marking Ceremony for Isaac Hammond, a fifer in the 10th NC State Line, was held on August 23rd, 2005. Chapter membership totaled 36 at the close of 2005.  

President Frank Horton in May 2006 stated that “The Chapter’s Militia Color Guard is able to place 3 to 5 compatriots at each participating event and the Chapter’s awards program is second to none in recognizing the patriotic acts of its Chapter members and area citizens.”  

 

At the May 2006 meeting, MAJ (Ret.) Bobby Henderson was elected the Chapter President. Other elected officers included VP Richard Bishop, S/T Paul Monroe  (Lloyd 

Lietz in 2007 as Treasurer), Chaplain Bob Jackson, Historian Maurice Robertson, Genealogist Jack Wells, and Registrar Frank Horton. Chapter Compatriots supported their DAR sisters on June 8th when General (Ret.) Hugh Shelton was awarded the DAR Medal of Honor at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum.  Our Compatriots represented us well at the Joint Society Grave Dedication and Memorial to COL William R. Davie, Patriot Cavalry Officer and Statesman, at the Old Waxhaws Presbyterian Church on June 24, 2006. Outstanding meeting programs included “The Revolutionary War in Cumberland County, by Sam West (July 13th); “The Revolutionary War at Yorktown,” by Dan Jutson (September 14th); “A Rabble in Arms,” by Lloyd Lietz,” (March 8th); and “Muskets of the Revolutionary War,” by Jutson & Wells (May 24th). The Chapter participated in 3 Grave Marking Ceremonies in 2006: namely, PVT Ebenezer Hearne on May 21st, CPT William Barrett II on September 23rd and the Grimes Family members on October 29, 2,006. Frank Horton was presented the Patriot Medal at the Annual

Convention in 2006 for his dedication to the ideals of the SAR.  In January 2007, Bob Henderson presented Martha Washington Medals to Linda Kizer and Gail Harris for their support of Chapter activities.  In 2007, the Chapter sponsored or participated in 20 patriotic or historic site celebrations including 2 for the first time: the Naval  Battle of the Revolutionary War at Cape Canaveral FL (Steve Pittard) and the 250th Birthday Celebration of Le Marquis de Lafayette in downtown Fayetteville.  Our members were involved in 14 Color Guard Events; 6 Grave Marking/Dedication Events (Isham Blake on March 3rd, Jacob Gaster Re‐internment on April 29th, with DAR for Louise Byrd on June 3rd, William Pridgen on June 23rd, Gov. Richard Caswell on August 18th, and Gabriel DuBrutz on September 6th.  

 Frank Horton, Steve Pittard, and Richard Bishop were elevated to NCSSAR VP, Secretary, and SE 

District VP, while Clark Wiser remained as Chaplain at the 2007 State Convention in April. Richard Bishop was made a George Washington Fellow. The Chapter won the NCSSAR Achievement Award. Joe Harris received the prestigious Patriot Medal. Frank Horton received the Meritorious Service Medal and Steve Pittard and Clark Wiser received Silver Outstanding Service Medals. Jack Wells and John Griffith II received War Service Medals (Vietnam) from the Chapter.  COL (Ret.) Donald Kropp was made an honorary Chapter Member on July 12th. Five Chapter members were present at the Annual 117th National Congress in 2007. Steve Pittard was awarded the Graham T. Smallwood Award for his outstanding work with NCSSAR’s “The Old North State” newsletter (best newsletter with more than ten pages for 500+ State members). Rev. Clark Wiser and Steve Pittard were confirmed as National and Alternate Trustees. Bob Edmundson and  Wendell Small were inducted in as new members.  Chapter membership totaled 38 in 2006 and 42 in 2007.   

 

The 2008‐2009 chapter officers were elected in November 2007. They included President MAJ (Ret.) Richard D. Bishop, VP Maurice Robertson, S/T Paul Monroe, Genealogist/Registrar 

Jack Wells, Chaplain Bob Jackson, CGC Dan Jutson, Historian Wendell Small, and Newsletter Editor Frank Horton. As a shock to all Chapter compatriots, President Bob Henderson was fatally injured in an accident during a fossil hunting trip in Elizabethtown on Friday, November 30, 2007. He was much beloved by all. Mary Henderson, wife of Bob Henderson, was presented the Martha Washington medal along with the past presidents’ medal honoring her late husband at the January 2008 Chapter meeting. 

 Past Chapter & NCSSAR President Joe E. Harris was hired 

as the NSSAR Executive Director in March of 2007 and moved away to Louisville, Kentucky, to begin his employment.. MAJ Bruce Daws, Commander of the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry, was designated the Chapter’s 2nd Honorary Member after COL (Ret.) Donald Kropp was made the Chapter’s 1st Honorary Member in 2007. The Chapter was credited with 4 Grave Marking Ceremonies in 2008: May 4th for James O’Kelley in Chatham County NC; May 31st for Abner Nash in New Bern NC; November 9th for James Pearsall in Kenansville NC; and December 13th for Patrick S. Johnston in Edenton NC. The Chapter participated in several Patriotic Events for the first time including the Fourth Friday Celebration for the signing of the Liberty Point Resolves on June 27th, viewing of the Liberty Point Resolves at the Transportation Museum on July 22nd, and the Marquis de Lafayette Capsule Ceremony at the Cross Creek Park on September 21st.

The Chapter pinned membership rosettes on five new members in 2008: Bruce Barrett, Bruce Daws, John Elliott, David Mann, and Lewis Smith. The Chapter’s membership ended the year with 47 members. Many new records were set including 24 patriotic parades and historic site celebrations attended, 29 ROTC and JROTC medals awarded, 22 War and Military Service Medals awarded, and ten articles published in The Old North State and SAR Magazine. The Chapter supported one Eagle Scout Adam Craven for candidacy at the state level. Compatriot David Mann took over the duties of Secretary/Treasurer at the September 2008 Meeting. Our chapter’s participation with at least six of our compatriots at each of the 25 historic sites, patriotic parades and grave marking events were truly phenomenal.  For outstanding service, our Chapter issued four Bronze Good Citizenship Medals, six Bronze Good Citizenship Oak Leaf Clusters, fifteen Color Guard Pins, and eight certificates of appreciation. Joe Harris received the Medal of Distinguished Service Medal at the State Convention.   Joe Harris received a South Atlantic District Meritorious Service Medal for his years of Chapter and State Society service. At the Annual 118th National Congress in Sacramento CA, Rev. Clark Wiser was recognized for his work on the Chaplains and Speakers/Writers Committees, while Steve Pittard received three Appreciation Certificates for his outstanding work.  

 Past Chapter President Frank Horton gave two Revolutionary War History presentations for 

elementary school children at the North Regional Branch Library on January 15th and the Fort Bragg Irwin Middle  School on February 12th. 2009. On February 27th, President Bishop honored Rowan DAR Chapter Lib Wilson and Joann Walters with Martha Washington Medals for work setting up the Fayetteville Flag Retirement Ceremony. Chapter Compatriot Rev. A. Clark Wiser was named the next NSSAR Chaplain General at the Knoxville KY SAR Leadership Conference in mid‐March and honored at the March 12th Chapter meeting for his 40 years of SAR service. Regent Lib Wilson of the Robert Rowan Chapter of the NCSDAR was presented the Martha Washington medal by DAR Liaison David Mann. 

 The induction of the slate of officers voted in during the March 2009 was performed by the 

former Chapter President and NCSSAR Secretary Steve Pittard. The following officers were inducted 

during the May 2009 meeting: Maurice B. Robertson as President, Dan Jutson as Vice President, David Mann as Secretary/Treasurer, Jack Wells as Registrar/Genealogist, and Robert Jackson as Chaplain. Significant meeting programs included: 1) Liberty Point Resolves (Bruce Daws) on July 9th; 2) “All the Men Who Could Be Spared – The North Carolina Militia and Continental Line, 1775‐1783.” (Josh Howard) on September 10th; 3) Eagle Scout, JROTC and Knight Essay Contest winners Mark Roberts, Bill Frossel, and Sarah Stewart Reading their Winning Essays on November 12th ; Compatriot Tim Boyd on “The History and Battle of the Moore’s Creek Bridge” on January 14th, 2010.  

 During his time in office, 2 Martha Washington medals, 3 

Longevity pins, 16 Outstanding Citizen pins, 5 Certificates of Appreciation, 4 Bronze Good Citizenship Medals, 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, and 2 Color Guard Medals were issued. President Robertson and Waverly McLeod were presented the Service to Veterans Medal by Compatriots Saunders and Horton.  

 At the Annual State Convention in April (7 members 

present), the Chapter and its members were recipients of several  awards: Bronze Color Guard Medal – Maurice Robertson and Clark Wiser, State Meritorious Service Medal w/OLC – Clark Wiser and Steve Pittard, Silver Good Citizenship Medal ‐ Richard Bishop and

Frank Horton, 1st Place Scrapbook – Wendell Small with Chapter  awarded streamer, Chapter Achievement Award Streamer, State Color Guard Commander Gorget – Dan Jutson, and SAR Medal of Appreciation – Regent Virginia Powers of the Liberty Point DAR Chapter. At the National Congress in July, Chapter members Pittard, Horton, Robertson, and Jutson received awards. Compatriot Rev. Clark Wiser and Frank Horton were elected Chaplain General and Council of State Secretary/Treasurer, respectively.  Chuck Yard was appointed JROTC/ROTC Chairman in July. Chuck Yard and Bryon Schulken were inducted into the Chapter in 2009. The Wreaths Across America event was held at the Main Post Cemetery on Fort Bragg and Sand Hill’s Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake NC.  Chapter membership at the close of 2009 totaled 46. 

 During his tenure in office, President Robertson 1) worked closely with Compatriot Waverley 

McLeod and the VA Hospital in various programs of outreach to veterans, 2) held several well‐attended genealogy workshops at the Cumberland County HQS Library, 3) developed a close working relationship with the Liberty Point DAR, and 4) raised significant funds for the chapter treasury through member gifts and a fund raiser.  

 Carl T. Jolley was made an honorary member at the January 10, 2010 meeting and passed away 

on January 30th.  At the March 11, 2010 meeting, Chapter President Maurice Robertson resigned his position as Chapter President and encouraged all chapter members to support the incoming President. Past Chapter President Steve Pittard entertained motions from the floor to elect a slate of 

Chapter officers. The following were nominated and elected, then inducted into office:  President Daniel Jutson, VP David Mann, Secretary Keith Tilghman, Treasurer Tim Boyd, Registrar Frank 

Horton,  Historian Wendell Small, and Chaplain Robert Jackson. Two Grave Marking Ceremonies took place for John Alderman in Delway NC on June 26th and Abraham and Joseph Misenheimer in Concord NC on September 11th.  

 Significant monthly programs included: 1)“Heritage of 

Harmony Hall in White Oak NC”, by Docent Laurie Smith (May 13); 2) “History of Old Brunswick Town (Fort Anderson),” by Tim McKee (July 8); 3) “Uniform & Period Attire for SAR Members,” by Dan Jutson (September 9); 4)“Formation of Lumber River Chapter – Focus on Robeson, Hoke, Columbus, Bladen, Moore, and Scotland Counties,” by David Mann & Sam West (November 11th). 

 At the April 24, 2010 Annual Convention, Rev. Clark Wiser 

became a George Washington Fellow. Daniel J. Jutson received  the Bronze Color Guard Medal; Richard Bishop and Rev. Wiser – the Meritorious Service Medal; and Steve Pittard – the Patriot Medal. NCSSAR President Horton appointed MAJ (Ret.) Richard D. Bishop as State Color Guard Commander at the Patriots Day sponsored Parade at the Alamance Battleground . 

 President Jutson attended the 100th Boy Scout National Jamboree in July where he met a 

number of Compatriots manning the NSSAR Booth in the Exhibits Area. Frank Horton became the editor of “The Old North State” in December 2010. New Chapter members included David Olson, John Pankey, and John H. Miller.. The Chapter membership at the close of 2010 totaled 55.

Past Chapter President Steve Pittard installed the following 

compatriots to their office on January 13, 2011: President David Mann, VP Chuck Yard, Secretary Keith Tilghman, Treasurer John 

Elliott, Historian Bruce Barrett, Chaplain Bob Jackson, and Registrar Frank Horton. 

 Significant programs for 2011 included: 1) “War of 1812 as the 

2nd War of Independence and Festival of Yesteryear,” by Jim and Leisa Greathouse (March 10th); 2) “Robert Rowan: an American Patriot,” by  Blue DePrater of the COL Rowan Chapter of the NCSSAR (May 12th); 3) “The War between the States in Fayetteville,” by Bruce Daws, Fayetteville Historic Properties Manager (July 14th); 4) “The  Lafayette Birthday Celebration,” by Dr. Henry Parfitt, President of the Lafayette Society (September 8th); and 5) “The Ashe Family of North Carolina,” by Chapter President David Mann (November 10th).  

 Frances Kelly, Regent of the Liberty Point Chapter NCSDAR, was awarded a Martha Washington 

Medal by immediate Past President Dan Jutson.  2011 marked the 10th Anniversary of the chapter co‐sponsoring the Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony in June. 

 The chapter participated in several grave marking ceremonies: 1) assisted the Francis Nash 

Chapter in Siler City NC with the May grave  marking of NC Regulator and Patriot James Emerson; 2) attended the July 23rd grave markings of COL Francis Locke, BG Matthew Locke, MAJ John Locke and LT George Locke at their respective sites in Charlotte and Salisbury; and attended the October 22nd grave markings of GEN John Alexander Lillington, Governor Samuel  Ashe, Marine LT William Cincinnatus Ashe, and COL Samuel Ashe at Rocky NC. 

 At the April 15 Annual Convention in Raleigh, Steve Pittard was sworn in as the NCSSAR 

President. Chaplain Clark Wiser and Frank Horton were sworn in as Chaplain and National Trustee.  Frank Horton received the Silver Color Guard Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (along with Rev. Clark Wiser), and the State Medal for Distinguished Service at the Awards Banquet. David Mann was awarded a Bronze Good Citizenship Medal by the State Society along with Sam West for their involvement with the establishment of the Lumber River Chapter NCSSAR. 

 The Annual 121st National Congress in Winston‐Salem was attended by Compatriots Steve 

Pittard, Frank Horton, Rev. Clark Wiser, Joe Harris, Chuck Yard, and David Mann with Compatriots Pittard, Horton, Wiser and Harris serving as national delegates. Clark Wiser concluded his three‐year term as Chaplain General.  Editor Frank Horton of The Old North State won the Graham T. Smallwood Jr Award for Best State News Publication for a state membership of 500+ with over 10 pages. Joe Harris resigned as the NSSAR Executive Director (2007‐2011) on the final day of the Congress and moved from Louisville KY to Ivins UT. 

 Unique Chapter Initiatives included: 1) assisting Sam West in the chartering of the Lumber River 

Chapter [Charter Ceremony took place at the Historic Proctor Building in downtown Lumberton NC] on June 25th with chapter members Mann, Horton, Pittard, and Yard present]; 2) developing contacts with the Fayetteville Lafayette Society; and 3) establishing a scholarship program for youth.

During 2011, the Chapter awarded 36 JROTC/ROTC medals and certificates; provided 13 programs on Patriotism and the Revolutionary War; participated in 16 Patriotic Parades and Historic Site Celebrations. Three new Compatriots Bobby Ervin, James D. Wilhelm, and Jim Blank gave the Chapter a  total of 58 members at the close of 2011. The Chapter made their 1st appearance at the Battle of the Great Bridge and Roanoke Rapids Christmas Day Parade. 

 Compatriot Horton introduced the slate of officers for the 2012 term 

as presented by the Nominating Committee. After review and discussion,  the 

slate was approved and the officers inducted were President LCDR (Ret.) Chuck W. Yard, VP Lee Harford Jr., Secretary Keith Tilghman, 

Treasurer John Elliott, Historian Dave Olson, Chaplain Bob Jackson, and Registrar Frank Horton. 

 Chapter members at the 2012 meetings listened to six informative 

Revolutionary War Programs. They included: 1) “Lord Dunmore’s Role during the Revolution – the Last Royal Governor of the Colony of Virginia,” by outgoing President David Mann (January 12th); 2) “Re‐enactment of a Hessian Musketeer who Fought at Guilford Courthouse in the Von Buse Regiment,” by Chris Ruff, Curator of the Army Reserve Museum ( March 8th); 3) “An Overview of the Charlieville Musket and Brown Bess  “Long and Short Land Pattern,” by Jack Wells (May 10th);  4) “Revolutionary War  Militia Clothing, Accoutrements, and Weapons,” by Dan Hopping of the Raleigh Chapter (July 12th); 5) “Genealogy and the Process of Tracking Down our Patriot Ancestors,” by former Chapter President Frank Horton (September 13th);and  6) “Stories That Books Tell: Witnesses to Faith and History from the Colonial Period through the War of 1812,” by Chapter Chaplain Robert Alves (November 8th).    Five Chapter members attended the SAR Grave Marking Ceremony for COL John Cilley, Medal of Honor Recipient, in Hickory NC (April 21st); Dick Bishop and Rev. Clark Yard attended the John Phifer Cemetery Dedication and Renaming Ceremony on September 22nd; and Dick Bishop and Chuck Yard attended the Salisbury Ceremony for Patriot John Barr at the Thyatira Presbyterian Church Cemetery (September 23rd).    An average of five chapter members attended the Winter and Fall BOMs and Spring Leadership meeting, and 7 chapter members attended the NCSSAR Annual Convention at Carolina Beach. Dick Bishop, David Mann, and Chuck Yard were presented Meritorious Service Medals at the Awards Ceremony. Cadet Whitney Serauskas, a Junior from 71st High School (Fayetteville), won the State Outstanding Cadet Award along with a check for $750.00. At the National Congress, Steve Pittard was elected as Vice President General of the South Atlantic District (NC, SC, GA, & FL) and LTC (Ret.) Joe Harris was elected Vice President General of Inter‐Mountain District (ID, MT, WY, UT). Joe Harris also served in a dual capacity as the UTSSAR National Trustee. Both compatriots served as core members of the re‐chartered Fayetteville Chapter in 2000. Frank Horton received his Liberty Medal (2) for recruiting ten or more members and Frank Horton received the James T. Smallwood Jr Award (1st Place) for Best State Newsletter for 500+ members (ten pages or more).    The chapter worked with the DAR Chapters and FILI for the Flag Retirement Ceremony in June (16 chapter members attended) and Constitution Day in September. Chapter members also attended two Naturalization Oath Ceremonies in Raleigh and Winston‐Salem, and participated at a Lafayette Society Luncheon presenting four Outstanding Citizenship pins to French citizens from St. Alvod, Sister

City of Fayetteville. Fayetteville Police Chief Bergamine was presented the SAR Law Enforcement Medal in June. There were 13 Revolutionary War Themed programs, 16 Patriotic Parade and Historic Site Celebratory events. The Veterans Day Parade was televised by WRAL in Raleigh. 1st time events included Huck’s Defeat/Battle of Williamson’s Plantation SC, Eutaw Springs (SC), and the Battle of Elizabethtown NC (Monument Re‐dedication). 37 JROTC/ROTC medals and certificates were awarded to outstanding cadets in area high schools and colleges.    On August 1st, a significant milestone for our Chapter occurred – a Chapter website! Charlie Tilton came up with the idea, researched what to put in it, and made it a reality.  Charlie Tilton was presented with the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal with Certificate for this outstanding effort.    New members for 2012 included: Roger McLean, Terry Fowler, David and William Morketter, Zachary Thompson, Charles Tilton II, Eric Nobles, David Eric Nobles Jr, Jacob Nobles, Noah Nobles, and Robert Hughes. With adjustments for transfers and drops, compatriots totaled 63 at the close of 2012.  

Compatriots Horton, Mann, and Wiser (who comprised the Nominating Committee) presented the following slate of officers for 

2013: President – LTC (Ret)Lee Harford, Jr., Vice President – Clark Wiser, Secretary – Keith Tilghman, Treasurer – John Elliott, Historian – Dave Olson, Chaplain – Robert Alves, and Registrar – Bob Ervin. The slate was approved by acclamation. Compatriot Pittard  inducted the various Compatriots to their respective leadership positions. Past President Chuck Yard presented his wife Linda with the Martha Washington Medal for her support during his presidency on January 10th. 

Significant presentations on the Revolutionary War for 2013 included: 1)“The Southern Campaign  [strategic options available and employed by both sides during the War,”] by President Lee Harford (January 10th); 2) “What Best Defines My Character?” and “American Revolution Prisoners of War” were the speeches delivered by Outstanding JROTC Cadet Rhino Nevers and Eagle Scout Scholarship recipient and Knight Essay Contest winner Andrew Underwood (March 14th); 3) Chris Ruff Dressed as 1780’s Soldier of the British 7th Royal Fusilier Regiment of Foot (May 9th); 4)“The Fate of the Loyalists in North Carolina,” by Dr. Kathryn Coker, Deputy Director of the Office of Army Reserve History (July 11th); 5) “History of the 1814 ‘Star‐Spangled Banner’,” by Leisa Greathouse, Museum of the Cape Fear Curator (September 12th); 6) “The State of the NC Society,” by NCSSAR President (COL‐R) James Wood (November 14th); 7) Award Presentations, by Chapter President Lee Harford: National’s  Lafayette Volunteer Medal and the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal  to Compatriot Bob Ervin for helping with  data entry to a National Program and superb services rendered as Registrar, respectively; Bronze Good Citizenship Medals to Jason Wetzel, Bruce Daws, Keith Tilghman, and John Elliott for outstanding service to the Chapter … and to Wendell Small for Chapter Historical Research (January 9, 2014). 

The first Compatriot Grave Marking was held at the Fayetteville Cross Creek Cemetery #1 on December 7th at 10 o’clock for Herbert Lutterloh (NC SAR Member #51, 8/5/1912). Mr. Lutterloh was born on October 9, 1859 and died on May 24, 1913. He was the descendant of Revolutionary War Veteran Colonel James Bonner and represents the earliest SAR member in Fayetteville. 

The Chapter participated in two Grave Marking events at Greenville NC for Patriot COL John Hardee (June 15th)  and at Connor NC for John Eckerd (June 22nd);  sponsored with the Fayetteville Area

Transportation & Local History Museums the Grave Marking of Patriot Lewis Barge in Cross Creek Cemetery #1 (August 17th) (16); participated in two grave marking ceremonies for MAJ Benjamin May in Farmville NC (October 12 (4) and COL John Whitaker in Enfield NC (October 19) (4). 

At the Annual State NCSSAR Convention in April 2013, Chapter members were elected to the following offices: SVP Chuck Yard, Historian Lee Harford, Genealogist Frank Horton, and Chaplain Clark Wiser. Cadet Rhino Nevers of 71st High School was chosen as the JROTC Outstanding Cadet. Andrew Underwood of Clinton High School won both the State’s Eagle Scout Scholarship of $750.00 and the Knight Essay Contest for $750.00. 

At the 123rd National NSSAR Congress in Kansas City (July), Chapter members Steve Pittard, Charlie Tilton, and Dick Bishop, and Joe Harris received awards for significant achievements; Steve Pittard received the Minuteman Award, the highest award by the National Congress for distinguished service. He also received the Carl E. Bessent Award for best single‐sheet newsletter in the nation. Charlie Tilton received the Robert B. Vance Award for the best chapter website, while Dick Bishop received the 1st National Von Steuben Medal for sustained leadership in the NSSAR Color Guard. Joe Harris was awarded the Matthew Sellers, III, Award that is presented to the vice president general who achieves the highest percentage of membership over quota for 2012‐2013. The Chapter also received the “Partners in Patriotism Certificate” for work supporting Veterans Groups. On the final day of the Congress, Joe Harris was elected and installed as the Alternate National Trustee for the IDSSAR and the UTSSAR. 

Innovative Initiatives for the year included: 1) establishment of Membership (Jason Wetzel), Grave Marking (Bruce Daws), Veterans (Daws), and 2014 Convention (Pittard) Committees to better serve specific core goals of the chapter. 2) Compatriot Jason Wetzel initiated a fourth Friday recruitment effort in downtown Fayetteville using an eight‐foot table as the base for his operations with the Chapter’s SAR banner displayed on the front of the table. 3)Frank Horton sponsored four Genealogical Seminars under the “Fourth Friday” evening events on May 24th, June 28th, July 26th, and August 23rd, and Compatriot Bobby Ervin sponsored one event at FORSCOM/USRC HQS.  4) establishment of a 2013 Council of Presidents to advise the Chapter President on awards within and without the chapter and to serve as a liaison with other Fayetteville organizations. 5) adoption of the Chapter Motto “Fortius Ductu” (Strength Through Leadership) and Chapter Vision Statement “To Be a First Class NSSAR  Award Winning Chapter within Five Years,” 6) establishment of a Chapter Speakers Bureau to deliver patriotic, historical, and educational programs outside the SAR; and 7) establishment of “The Lafayette Guard” to support Chapter Color Guard events by firing volleys with Revolutionary War period muskets & rifles. 

Under the leadership of President Lee Harford, 36 JROTC/ROTC medals were awarded to area school outstanding cadets. 21 Patriotic Parade and Historic Site Celebrations took place: Battle of Cowpens (4), Crossing of the Dan (2), Battle of Moore’s Creek (5), Last Naval Battle (FL) (1), Battle of Guilford Courthouse (7), Halifax Resolves (4), Buford’s Massacre (6), Patriots Day at Alamance Battleground (4), Memorial Day at Wilmington National Cemetery (4), Flag  Retirement Ceremony (15) , Battle of Ramsour’s Mill (4), Colson’s Mill (2), Gathering at Sycamore Shoals (1),Veterans Day Parade  with WRAL‐TV  and Fayetteville Observer Coverage (10), Battle of King’s Mountain (4), and “ Battle of the Hook” at Yorktown (1), Roanoke VA Veterans Day Parade (1), NC Flag Presentation Ceremony in Wilson (1), Roanoke Christmas Parade (2), Reading of the President General’s Proclamation at the Sand Hills  Veteran’s Ceremony at the Wreaths Across America Ceremony (1), and Re‐enactment of Washington Crossing the Delaware (2). [Number in parenthesis represents Chapter Compatriots present]

In addition, the Chapter published five newspaper articles in local papers; conducted 8 historical presentations at SAR meetings; mailed 50 “Keyhole to History” CDs to radio, TV stations, and schools; sponsored ten public awareness programs and nine genealogy/history seminars;  and provided daily veteran support to the local VA hospital earning nearly 6000 points for the USS Stark Award. 

The Chapter’s 2nd President (1970‐1972) Theodore Louis Spilman passed away on Wednesday, October 6th. The Chapter Membership at the close of 2013 stood at 93 primary members and 3 dual members with 31 added during 2013. 

At the November 2013 meeting, the 2014 budget of $1650 was approved; Stephen M. Hill was presented the Heroism Medal for saving a man’s life; and Chris Smith was inducted into the Chapter. 

At the January 9th 2014 meeting, John, Robert, and Samuel Osborn were inducted into the 

Chapter. The Chapter Officers for 2014 were elected by acclamation on January 9, 2014 and installed by Past State President Compatriot Steve Pittard, which included a 2nd year for President Lee Harford, a 1st year for Vice President Wendell Small and Secretary Michael Aycock, a 4th year for Treasurer John Elliott, a 3rd year for Historian David Olson, and a 2nd year for Chaplain Robert Alves and Registrar Bob Ervin. 

 At the March 13th Chapter Meeting, Past Chapter President Chuck Yard presented Compatriot David Olson the Lamplighter Award for outstanding monetary gifts to the NSSAR and Compatriots Wendell Small and Clark Wiser the Distinguished Service Medal for Outstanding Service to the Chapter.  Chuck Yard was awarded the Bronze and Silver Color Guard medals and Clark Wiser the Von Steuben Medal at the September 2013 Leadership Conference. Cadet Emily Jasienowski , the Chapter’s  Outstanding JROTC winner, read her essay on “How the JROTC has helped me to be a better citizen of the United States.” 

As a shock to all of us, our Chapter President Lee S Harford, Jr., Ph.D., retired lieutenant colonel of the U.S. Army, 62, died at the Cape Fear Valley Medical Center Intensive Care Surgical Unit of pneumonia on Friday evening, March 14, 2014. Throughout his illustrious career, Compatriot Harford taught U. S. History, world civilizations, and military history courses at the USMA, VMI, GMC et al. He also served as the Command Historian of the U.S. Army ROTC Cadet Command at Fort Monroe and continued to serve as the Director of History for the U.S. Army Reserve Command from 1992 until his death. His love for history led him to join several heritage/patriotic groups to include SUVCW. NCSSAR, NSSAR, MOLLUS, FILI, and the Confederation of Union Generals (COUG). Let’s face it: “President Lee Harford provided our chapter with a motto, vision, and a drive to be the very best chapter in the state and country!” 

The 86th Annual NCSSAR Convention on April 25‐26 at the Double Tree Hotel in Fayetteville was a resounding success in no small part to Steve Pittard with several sleepless nights and the help provided by Double Tree Hotel contact Micah Roberts. Eighteen of our chapter members supported this effort in various ways. At the Youth Luncheon, the Marquis de Lafayette’s Outstanding JROTC Cadet Master Sergeant Emily Jasienowski won the NCSSAR JROTC Outstanding Cadet Competition Medal and $750.00. A Certificate of Appreciation was given to our Honorary Member Chris Ruff for his Depiction of the British Redcoat Soldier. Dick Bishop and Clark Wiser received Silver Roger Sherman medals for faithful service. The Chapter received six 2013 NCSSAR Streamers including 1) 95% Membership

Retention, 2) Flag Certificate Award, 3) Forgotten Patriots, and 4) Large Chapter Americanism Award. Bruce Daws provided a timely talk on the “American Revolution Experience in Cumberland County” at the President’s Reception and Judge Rich Leonard, Dean of the Campbell University Law School, spoke on “The House by the Creek” and his family’s ties to the Revolutionary War. 

On  May  8,  2014,  Compatriot  Wendell  Small  was  installed as  the 11th Chapter President and David Olson   as  Vice  President  by  SE  District  Vice  President  David  Mann, Chair of the Chapter’s Nominating Committee.  

Tim Tompkins was inducted into the Chapter by Compatriots Bob Ervin and  Frank  Horton.  He  was  sponsored  by  his  father  Paul  Tompkins  Jr. Compatriot Jack Wells was awarded the Chapter Meritorious Service Medal for services  rendered  in  the  Flag  Retirement  Ceremonies  from  2002  to  2013. Compatriot Jason Wetzel briefed the membership on the 1) significance of the 2014 NCSSAR State Convention’s Large Chapter Americanism Streamer Award to Le Marquis de Lafayette Chapter, 2) the June 12‐14 hosting of the American Friends of Lafayette by the Fayetteville Lafayette Society, and 3) the Hay Street Fourth Friday Program 

At  the  July  10th  meeting,  Billy  &  Seth  Lewis  and  Madison  Garner  were  recognized.  They presented a program on Harmony Hall, the Backwoods Militia and the Battle of Elizabethtown. Clark and Frank were presented their 45th and 20th Years of Service Pins. Michael Aycock briefed the Chapter on President Harford’s internment at Arlington National Cemetery where 24 members of the Confederation of Union Generals dressed in period attire attended the ceremonies. It was moved and seconded by Dick Bishop and Charles Sanger to purchase poles and tops for the U.S. and NC flags at a cost of $150.00.The motion passed unanimously. A motion  to make  “The House  in  the Horseshoe”  an  annual  sponsored event by  the  chapter was moved by  Frank Horton  and  seconded by Dick Bishop  and was passed by acclamation. 

At the September 11th meeting, Ms. Sandy Webbere, Curator of Special Exhibits and Programs at the NC Museum of History  in Raleigh, gave an enlightening talk on “Revolutionary War Espionage and Washington’s  Spy  Network.”  She  was  presented  an  Appreciation  Certificate  by  President  Small. Compatriot  Waverly  McLeod  was  presented  the  Meritorious  Service  Medal  for  his  long  hours  of volunteer work at the Fayetteville VA Hospital. Compatriots Terry Fowler, Bob Ervin, and Frank Horton were recognized  for  their recruitment of at  least ten SAR members  in 2013 after being presented the Liberty Medal for such work at the July 2014 NSSAR National Congress in SC. Registrar Bob Ervin stated that 24  supplemental applications had been approved  for  the year. Treasurer  John Elliott praised  the efforts of Dick Bishop for his outstanding work as NCSSAR Color Guard Commander over the past four years with his retirement at the August BOM meeting. Compatriot Bishop was roundly applauded for his efforts. Approval was given to the Chapter to have a yard sale on October 4th and the raffling off of some vintage pints of George Washington (Original Recipe) whiskey at the November and January meetings. Funds  realized  from  these  efforts will  be  used  for  youth  scholarships,  purchase  of  patriot markers, speaker honorariums for persons who must travel more than fifty miles away, and the setting up of a grieving fund.

At  the November 13th meeting, E.C. Crow,  Fellow of  the  Society of Antiquaries of  Scotland, gave a presentation on  “Scottish Heraldry and  the Founding  Fathers”  for which he  received a much‐appreciated Certificate of Appreciation from President Small.. 

At  the  January  8,  2015  Annual  Meeting,  71st  High  School  Cadet A’Lexus Lee read her winning essay on “How has JROTC prepared me to be a better  citizen  of  the  United  States?”  in  the  Chapter’s  JROTC  Outstanding Cadet  competition  and was  presented  a  Bronze Medallion with  ribbon,  a Certificate,  and  a  check  for  $150.00. Nominations  Committee  Chair  Steve 

Pittard  read  the  list  of  2015  officers,  consisting  of  President  COL Bobby  Ervin,  VP  Bruce  Daws,  Secretary  Michael  Aycock, Treasurer  John  Elliot, Registrar/Genealogist  Frank Horton, Chaplain Robert Alves, and Historian David Olson. They were unanimously elected to office. State President Kenith Wilson proceeded to  install the slate of newly elected  officers.  President‐elect  Bobby  Ervin  thanked  the  compatriots  for  this  unique  honor  and encouraged  the Chapter members  to  be more  active  in working   with  1)  local  schools  in presenting JROTC/ROTC medals and publicizing the various youth scholarships and programs, 2) sister DAR chapters in recruiting future SAR members, and 3) giving thought to why we are SAR members.  

In  his  closing  remarks,  President Wendell  Small  thanked  the membership  for  their  support during 2014. He specifically noted the successful grave markings of Compatriot D. Jacob Highsmith (Jun 28), Patriot COL Alexander McAllister (Aug 9), Patriot John McNeely (Aug 16), and MG John Ashe (Nov 1). Other noteworthy events included 1) the Flag Retirement Ceremony (Jun 14), 2) Chapter‐sponsored Wreath Laying Ceremony at Patriot COL Benjamin Williams’ grave site at the “House in the Horseshoe” (Aug 2), and 4) the 225th Anniversary Ceremony of North Carolina’s Ratification of the U.S. Constitution in Fayetteville on November 21, 1789 (Market House‐Nov 22).  

The  following  individuals were  recognized with  specific  pins, medals,  and  certificates  at  the Awards Ceremony: 1) Years of Service Pins – Larry Koonce (25), Steve Pittard (15), Richard Bishop (10), Keith Tilghman  (10), Waverley McLeod  (10), Dan  Jutson (10), Frank Everett  (10), and Lawrence Hilpert (10);  2) Bronze Good Citizenship Medals  – Robert Alves, Michael Aycock,  and David Olson;  3) Roger Sherman Medal – Jason Wetzel; 4) Chapter Meritorious Service Medals – Bobby Ervin, Bruce Daws, John Elliott, and Keith Tilghman; 5) DAR Martha Washington Medal – Eleanore Getz, Regent of Liberty Point Chapter;  and Appreciation Certificates –  Frank Horton, David Mann, Richard Bishop, Clark Wiser  and Steve Pittard.  

During 2014,  the Chapter supported a yard sale, a  raffle,  two catered meals, and contributed generously to build up funds for youth scholarships, purchase of grave markers, a grieving fund, etc. We were saddened by the loss of our President Compatriot Lee Harford and Compatriot Ted Loop. With the help of Registrar Bobby Ervin, we added five new members to the Chapter rolls: Tim Tompkins, John and Jacob Johnston, and Andrew Curtis and Robert Jeffrey Drummond. After adding 55 new members from 2011 thru 2013, we experienced a  loss of 21 members  in 2014 with a new total of 72 members at the beginning of 2015. 

Our 2015 Chapter meetings  included 1) Outstanding Cadet A’Lexus Lee read her winning essay on “How has  JROTC prepared me  to be a better Citizen of  the United States  (1/8/2015), 2) VP Bruce

Daws gave a presentation on the “Revolution in the Cape Fear Region” (3/5/2015), 3) Compatriot John Elliott gave a hands on demonstration of “Patriot Uniforms and Militia Wear”  (5/7/2015), Compatriot Frank Horton presented a public seminar  in   the HQS Library Pate Room on “Genealogy – Finding Your Ancestor”  and  Joel  Johnston,  President  of  the  Isham  Blake  NCSCAR,  gave  an  overview  on  the organization and activities of the Society (7/9/2015), Compatriot Wendell Small gave a presentation on his  patriot  ancestor  “Daniel  Small  Jr  and  the  Battle  of  Monmouth  Courthouse”  (9/3/2015),  and Compatriot Chaplain Robert Alves shares an interesting power point talk on his patriot ancestor Robert William Johnston (11/5/2015).

the SAR for 50 years, Chapter Chaplain 2000‐2004, NCSSAR Chaplain 2002‐2016, 

and NSSAR Chaplain General 2009‐2011. 

  During 2015, Chapter members presented a wreath at eleven historic sites 

and participated in Memorial Day, Flag Day, Constitution Day, and Veterans’ Day 

Ceremonies. The historic sites included  Cowpens (4), Crossing of the Dan (Elliott), 

Battle of Moore’s Creek (6), Battle of Guilford Courthouse (3), Signing of Halifax 

Resolves (Ervin, Pittard, Aycock, & Brock), Battle of Alamance (4), Battle of 

Buford’s Massacre (Pittard, Bishop, and Small), Battle of Ramsour’s Mill (Pittard & Bishop), Battle of the 

House in the Horseshoe (7), Battle of Colson’s Mill (3), and the Battle of King’s Mountain (Bishop) 

  Clark Wiser, Frank Horton, Steve Pittard, and Dick Bishop attended the 24‐26 February and 24‐

26 September Leadership Meetings in Knoxville, while the same group attended the NSSAR National 

Congress on June 25‐July 1 where Cadet A’Lexus Lee won third place in the National Outstanding Cadet 

competition with a check for $500, Compatriot Joe Harris was given the prestigious Minuteman Award, 

and Frank Horton received two additional oak‐leaf clusters for his Liberty Medal in bringing 20 new 

members into the Society. NCSSAR President Tim Berly presented the Chapter with an Americanism  

Participation Streamer for 137% participation in the Patriot Ancestor Biography Project at the July 

meeting as well as the Americanism  Award for 2014. The Chapter was well represented at the 31 

January and 22 August BOM meetings at Cowan’s Ford (Huntington) (4) and Raleigh (6). Steve Pittard 

was named the NCSSAR Development Officer, David Mann the SE Vice President, and Cadet A’Lexus Lee 

won NCSSAR’s Outstanding JROTC Cadet Medallion and a check for $750 at the Annual Meeting in 

Raleigh in April with six members present.  

  2015 Major Achievements: 1) Biographical sketches of NC patriots were provided to the 

National Data Base by President Bobby Ervin with the help of Chapter compatriots. 92 bios or 32% of the 

NCSSAR total came from the Chapter. 2) A record 39 JROTC/ROTC medals, 15 Flag Display certificates, 13 

History CDs, 25 Supplemental Applications,, 8 published articles, 1240 hours of time spent with VA 

Hospital veterans, and 21 Outstanding Citizenship Pins for veterans recognition were presented or 

completed by Compatriots Ervin, Small, Bishop, Aycock, Jutson, Daws, Drummond, Mann, and McLeod. 

3) At the September meeting, President Ervin presented Judge James Ammons with the SAR Law 

Enforcement Commendation Medal for Distinguished Exemplary Service to the Community, while Past 

President Maurice Robertson received the Ten Years of Service Pin from President Ervin. 4) Seven new 

members were added to our chapter: David A. Hinds; Jerry Dale Jones; Robert, David, and Glen Keeney; 

Mark A. Thomas Sr; and David S. Vroom. 5) $1,750 in Scholarships and $11,139 in gifts to NSSAR were

passed on.. 6) Eight Chapter members attended the Memorial Service for CSM (Ret.) Jack Wells at the 

F.I.L.I. Armory and Parade Field on 1 August 2015. Jack had been an active member of the Chapter for 

ten years. 7) Chapter Compatriots participated in one grave marking ceremony for Patriot John Elwell. 

Chapter membership as of 1 January totaled 69. Average meeting attendance came to 16 compatriots 

and 3 guests with a total of 52 compatriots and visitors at the public genealogy seminar in July.  

  On Thursday, 7 January 2016, Wendell Small, Chair, Youth Awards Committee, introduced the 

Chapter’s Outstanding JROTC Cadet Selena Kutsch of Terry Sanford High School who read her essay after 

receiving her JROTC Bronze Medallion Medal, certificate, and check for $150. Later Steve Thrasher, State 

Chair of the Eagle Scout Awards Committee, introduced the Chapter’s Outstanding Eagle Scout Addison 

S. Cagle of Carthage who read his essay and was presented the SAR Patch and Medal and a check for 

$150. President Ervin presented Appreciation Certificates to Compatriots Pittard, Aycock, and Tilghman; 

Bronze Roger Sherman medals to Daws, Elliott, and Small; Liberty Medal to Judy Pittard, and Service to 

Veterans Oak Leaf Cluster to Waverley McLeod. 

  Throughout the year, President Ervin stressed the importance of being an Award Winning 

Chapter and welcomed partnerships with the boy scouts, sisters of the local DAR chapters, the newly 

organized Isham Blake Chapter of the Children of the American Revolution in Fayetteville under the 

leadership of Elizabeth Johnston. He encouraged chapter members to “Find your Passion in the SAR.” 

  At the close of the meeting, Nominating Committee Chair Steve Pittard introduced the 

candidates for Chapter Office for 2016. They included COL (Ret.) Bobby Jay Ervin, President; 

Michael T. Aycock, Vice President; Keith Tilghman, Secretary; John L. Elliott, 

Treasurer; Frank Horton, Registrar‐Genealogist; David Olson, Historian, and Rev. 

Robert Alves, Chaplain. They were elected by acclamation and immediately inducted into office. 

  At the 3 March 2016 meeting, 20 compatriots and 8 guests were in attendance. Bruce Daws 

gave an overview of Fayetteville and its role in the ratification of the Constitution. In his interesting talk, 

he noted three important things came out of the Fayetteville Convention in 1789: 1) the Constitution 

was ratified, 2) western lands were ceded to create the state of Tennessee, and 3) the first NC University 

was created at Chapel Hill. On this date, Michael Keeney was inducted into the Chapter by President 

Ervin; John Griffith was presented his 10 year membership pin and certificate; and Joel Johnston, 

President of the Isham Blake Society of the Children of the American Revolution (CAR) gave a brief 

overview of the Society’s activities and received the President’s Bar from President Ervin who then 

awarded Elizabeth Johnston, the Society’s adviser, with a Certificate of Appreciation. 

  At the 5 May 2016 meeting, 21 compatriots and 7 guests were in attendance. Past President 

Wendell Small gave a presentation on the “Various U.S. Presidential Polls and How the Presidents Were 

Ranked.” Three presidents were patriots, six were real sons, five were grandsons, one was a great 

grandson, and one was a 2nd great grandson, while 17 presidents were compatriots.

  President Bobby Ervin and NCSSAR VP George Strunk inducted into the chapter three new 

members: Kenneth Dale Young, Derek G. Webb, Jr. and Derek G. Derek Webb, Sr. Special Recognition 

was given to NCSSAR Ladies Auxiliary President Judith Pittard who awarded Ginny Powers for her work 

with female veterans by a coin from NSSAR 1st Lady Mickey Jo Lawrence.  President Ervin was presented 

with a NCSSAR Life Membership Certificate from NCSSAR VP George Strunk. NCSSAR SE VP David Mann 

updated the Chapter members on the April State Convention Awards for the Chapter: Flag Certificate, 

Membership Retention Greater than 95%, USS Stark Memorial Award for Large Chapter, and Thomas 

Nat Clark Outstanding Large Chapter. Individual Awards were presented to Frank Horton (Silver Roger 

Sherman Medal‐OLC), and Silver Roger Sherman Medals to David Mann, Steve Thrasher, and Bobby 

Ervin. Clark Wiser was presented with a Certificate of Chaplain Emeritus and a framed print for his many  

years of NCSSAR service. 

  The 7 July program was held in the Cumberland County HQS Pate Room with Compatriot David 

Gammon, NCSSAR Genealogist. He spoke on “Tips in Researching the Family Tree: Be Logical, Learn a 

Lot, and Have Fun.” President Ervin presented him with a much deserved Appreciation Certificate. New 

member Kenneth Bryan Storms was inducted into the Chapter. Special recognition was given to Jean 

Bishop with the Molly Pitcher award for her years of supporting the chapter Color Guard. 23 

compatriots and 30 guests attended the seminar and meeting. 

  At the 1 September meeting, there were 17 compatriots and 5 guests in attendance. The 

program was given by Robert “Buck” Buchanan on “Black Powder and Various Firearms Used by Both 

Sides during the Revolutionary War.” Senior VP of the NCSSAR George Strunk attended the meeting and 

recognized several individuals for various accomplishments within the SAR. Wendell Small received the 

State Meritorious Service Medal, Bobby Ervin the Liberty Medal Second Oak Leaf Cluster, Frank Horton 

the Liberty Medal Third Oak Leaf Cluster, and Steve Thrasher the Silver Roger Sherman Medal. John 

Henry Osborn, II, received the SW Asia Veterans Corps Certificate, Clark Wiser the 50 Year Membership 

Award, Steve Pittard the 20 Year Membership Award, Waverly McLeod the 15 Year Membership Award, 

while Robert Alves, Bobby Ervin, Nick Morketter, Will Morketter, and Zachary Thompson received their 

5 Year Membership Awards. 

  29 compatriots and 25 guests attended the 3 November meeting including 

the SCSSAR President H. Wayne Coursar who along with President Ervin inducted 

five new members into the Chapter:  Ed Hood, Rod and William Burgess, William R. 

Bell, and Harry Ray Emanuel. The program recognized 33 chapter compatriots as 

members of the Military Service Veterans Corps. CSM Gary Deese  read  “A Salute 

to Veterans, “ while SCSSAR President gave a Patriotic message and read a letter 

from the President General. Officer nominations for 2017 were read by Wendell 

Small: Michael T. Aycock, President [picture to the right]; David Lee Mann, Vice 

President; Keith W. Tilghman, Secretary; John Elliott, Treasurer; Robert Alves, 

Chaplain;  Bobby J. Ervin, Registrar/Webmaster; David Olson, Historian; and Daniel J. Jutson, CGC. 

  During 2016, chapter members attended anniversary programs at National and State historic 

sites for the Battles of Cowan’s Ford (Jan 30), Moore’s Creek Bridge (27 Feb), Guilford Courthouse (12

Mar), Signing of the Halifax Resolves (9 Apr), Ramsour’s Mill, House in the Horseshoe (6 Aug), Eutaw 

Springs (SC), and Buford’s Massacre. Members participated in Patriot grave markings for Thomas White 

(18 Jul), Governor Benjamin Williams (6 Aug), and a triple grave marking at St. Phillip’s Church in 

Brunswick Town for Governor Benjamin Smith, William Dry, and Supreme Court Justice Alfred Moore (11 

Dec). The Chapter also participated in the Memorial Day, Flag Retirement Day (11 June), Constitution 

Day at the Market House, and the Veterans’ Day Parade with 4 Compatriots and 15 Children of the 

Revolution marching (5 Nov).   

Due to the tireless efforts of Chapter President Bobby Ervin 19 new members were brought into the 

chapter for a total of 88 members at the close of year. Chapter attendance averaged 22 compatriots and 

15 guests per meeting. 

  21 Compatriots and 12 guests attended the 5 January 2017 Lafayette Chapter NCSSAR meeting 

at Logan’s Roadhouse in Fayetteville NC. The “Par Four” Musical Quartet (program) comprising of 

Compatriot Frank Horton, John Kingsley, Johnny Mabry, and Don Register delighted the audience with 

nostalgic and memorable tunes. All four were presented Certificates of Appreciation. 

  New Business: Compatriot Gary Green, NCSSAR President, attended the meeting and assisted 

with the induction of new members Carl P. Flanagan, Jr., Roy T. Tate, Andrew T. Tate, Nicholas C. Tate, 

and William J. Tate and the installation of chapter officers for 2017. 

  Compatriot Wendell Small passed out revised copies of the Chapter History. NCSSAR President 

Gary Green presented Compatriot John Elliott the Silver Color Guard Medal and Compatriot Steve 

Pittard the SAR 20 Year Membership Certificate. Chapter President Bobby Ervin presented Wendell 

Small the Meritorious Service Medal. President Ervin presented Wendell Small, John Elliott,  Keith 

Tilghman, and Michael Aycock a framed stamp from the first day of issue commemorating the 200th 

Anniversary of the Birth of the Marquis de Lafayette for their leadership roles in the chapter. 

Compatriots David Mann and Wendell Small presented a plaque to President Bobby Ervin for serving 

two terms as Chapter President. 

  Compatriot Wendell Small presented the list of officers nominated for the 2017 term including 

President – Compatriot Michael T. Aycock, Vice President – Compatriot David Mann, Secretary – 

Compatriot Keith Tilghman, and Treasurer – Compatriot John Elliott. Other officers included Chaplain 

Robert Alves, Historian David Olson, Registrar/Webmaster Bobby Ervin, and CGC Daniel Jutson. 

Former President passed the gavel to newly elected President Michael Aycock, and David Mann 

presented the past President’s Pin and Certificate to Compatriot Bobby Ervin. President Michael Aycock 

presented Frank Horton with the Liberty Medal consisting of 3 bronze Oak Leaf Clusters and 1 silver Oak 

Leaf Cluster. 

  14 compatriots attended the 9 March 2017 meeting at the F.I.L.I. The evening’s program 

“Evolution of the American Flag” was presented by Herbert Lynch and John Chandler of  the Cornelius 

Harnett Chapter #97 of the National Sojourners assisted by President Aycock. Compatriot Small 

announced the Chapter’s Outstanding Cadet for 2016‐2017 as Cadet Patrick Nieves of Pinecrest High 

School in Southern Pines. President Aycock briefed the membership on the 236th Commemoration of the

Battle of Cowan’s Ford at Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Huntersville NC on 28 January. This nationally 

recognized event memorialized General William Lee Davidson and the chapter earned a tripartite 

streamer. David Mann, John Elliott, and Steve Pittard represented the Chapter at the Battle of Moore’s 

Creek held on 4 March 2017. 

  13 compatriots and 5 guests attended the 11 May 2017 meeting at the F.I.L.I. Terri Cain Smith 

gave an interesting and informative program on her family’s history and genealogy along with research 

and stories about Cornwallis’ sojourn through the Cape Fear. President Aycock presented her with a 

Certificate of Appreciation. President Aycock  appointed Compatriot Josh Tate as Youth Awards 

Committee Chair. President Aycock was recognized for Advancing America’s Heritage Center by his 

financial contribution. The Chapter was awarded the 2016‐2017 NCSSAR President’s Streamer for Small 

Chapters.   

  27 compatriots and 27 guests attended the 13 July 2017 Genealogy Seminar and Chapter 

Meeting in the Pate Room of the Cumberland County HQS Library. NCSSAR Education Chair and 

Genealogist David Gammon gave a well‐received informational talk on “Tips for the Beginning 

Genealogist.” New members inducted into the Chapter included Jim & Jamie Ammons, Jon & Ben 

Campbell, and Edward Schowalter. They, in turn, gave a little background on their patriotic ancestors. A 

monetary gift of one hundred dollars was unanimously approved for the Preservation Committee of the 

House in the Horseshoe. On 10 June, 8 compatriots participated in the Flag Retirement Ceremony at the 

F.I.L.I. Parade Ground. On 15 June, Compatriot Wendell Small transferred a number of older chapter 

records to the Davis Library Archives at Methodist University. The files are open to the public to be read 

in a secure room. Archivist Arlene Fields will call the Chapter Historian at the close of each calendar year 

for possible additional records. Bobby Ervin was presented the NSSAR Vietnam Veterans Service Award 

and Daniel Jutson the State Color Guard Service Medal by VP David Mann. 

  14 Compatriots and 4 guests attended the 14 September 2017 Chapter meeting at Logan’s Roadhouse in Fayetteville NC.  Mr. Steven Campbell, Grand Historian of the Grand Lodge of the North Carolina AF&AM, presented an informative program on “Washington and the Revolution.” Chapter President Mike Aycock gave a brief summary of the proceedings of the National Congress held in Knoxville TN on July 6‐13, 2017. He called the Chapter’s only sponsored NCSSAR State Event at the Battle of the House in the Horseshoe in Sanford NC on 5 August an outstanding success. Keith Hardison, Director of NC Historic Sites, gave the keynote address on the Battle itself and placed it in historic perspective with the War’s overall time line. Ten NCSSAR, one SCSSAR, seven NCSDAR Chapters, and one NCSCAR Society totaling 32 members plus many guests and visitors were present for the event. Compatriots Robert Hasty and Thomas Wilhelm became new Chapter members, while S. E. Regional (Atlanta) VP Dr. Charles Lewis gave brief comments on his official visit to the chapter. 

   23 Compatriots and 4 DAR members attended the 9 November 2017 Chapter meeting at Logan’s Roadhouse in Fayetteville NC. Six new members were inducted into the Chapter: John Charles Horvath, Steve Dale Sherman, Wayne Allen Sherman, James Alexander Wilson, Donald Gene Talbot, and Albert Aycock. Compatriots John Elliott, Joshua and Roy Tate represented the Chapter and the NCSSAR  during the Color Guard Vigil at George Washington’s Tomb on the Mount Vernon Estate on 16 September. President Aycock attended the Raleigh Memorial Ceremony for NCSSAR Past President Tim Berly on 23 September. He attended the NSSAR Fall Leadership Conference in Louisville KY on 28‐30 September and volunteered to be member of the Medical Committee. President Aycock attended the 237th Commemoration of the Battle of Kings Mountain on 7 October 2017 giving the chapter a streamer for the event. Rev. Clark Wiser opened and closed the meeting with prayer.

  16 Compatriots attended the 11 January 2018 meeting at Logan’s Roadhouse in Fayetteville NC. 

George Council was inducted in as a Chapter member by Past President Maurice Robertson. After the report of the Nomination Committee, Maurice Robertson inducted the 2018 Executive Officers: President Michael Aycock, VP David Mann, Secretary Thomas Tate, and Treasurer John Elliott. Appointed Officers named by President Aycock included Chaplain Robert Alves, Historian David Olson, Registrar/Genealogist Bob Ervin, and Youth Awards Committee Chair Josh Tate. For the evening’s program 

Compatriot Josh Tate gave a power point presentation on the chapter, state, and national youth awards/medals and proceeded to get commitments from several members to present medals in 2018. He was roundly applauded for his effort. Compatriot Tate also gave the opening and closing prayers. Registrar Bobby Ervin brought in 16 new members in 2017 giving the Chapter a total of 86 members at the close of the year.     15 Compatriots and 3 guests were present for the 8 March 2018 meeting at Logan’s Roadhouse in Fayetteville NC. Daniel Hopping, President of the NC Sons of the Revolution, gave a fascinating presentation on “The Battle of Kings Mountain and Its Significance in the Southern Campaign” along with a plug for Over the Mountain Victory Trail Association (OMVTA). Compatriot Paul Monroe became a life member of the SAR.  

  14 Compatriots, 3 DAR members, 3 CAR members, and 3 guests met at the Museum of the Cape Fear, 801 Arsenal Avenue in Fayetteville NC on 10 May 2018. Youth Awards Chair Josh Tate recognized our Outstanding Cadet Chloe Graham from Pinecrest High School in Southern Pines and presented her with a scholarship check for $250. It was increased this year from $150 to $250. Charlie Knight, Curator of Military History at the NC  Museum of History in Raleigh, gave an Informative power point presentation on “Saving Yorktown.”  Mike Aycock and John Elliott attended the Battle of Guilford Courthouse Commemoration; Chaplain Robert Alves, Steve Pittard, John Elliott and Mike Aycock the Halifax Resolves Ceremony; and Bob Ervin and Mike Aycock the April NCSSAR annual meeting.  Compatriot Wendell Small moved that the chapter give a one hundred dollar gift to the Preservation Committee of the House in the Horseshoe for repair and painting of fence around Gov. Benjamin Williams grave. It was approved.    11 Compatriots and 10 visitors attended the12 July 2018 meeting held in the Pate Room of the 

Fayetteville HQS Library on Maiden Lane. NCSSSAR Genealogist David Gammon gave a power point 

presentation on “’Beginners’ Tips for Researching Your Family Tree.”  In concluding his presentation, he  

answered many questions from the audience for which he received an appreciative hand of  applause. It 

was pointed out that President Aycock attended grave marking ceremonies for James Carlos Harris in 

Louisburg and James Gillespie in Kenansville (DAR). Aycock, Mann, Elliot,  Monroe, Daws, and Olson 

were present at the Flag Retirement Ceremony on 9 June. Elliott and Aycock  attended the Alamance 

Battlefield Ceremony in May. John Grady Bunnell was inducted into the chapter. His patriotic ancestor 

was Titus Bunnell. Past President COL Bobby Ervin was awarded the State Meritorious Service Award by 

VP David Mann for his work as NCSSAR Registrar. Past Chapter President Wendell Small encouraged all 

compatriots to attend the 237th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of the House in the 

Horseshoe in Sanford NC at 10 a.m. on Saturday, 4 August 2018.
