PAVING THE WAY details the story of twelvemotorists who took a 5, 000-mile epic road trip beforethere were gas stations and fully paved roads. In1920, the inaugural tour of the Park-to-ParkHighway connected all twelve National Parks inthe American West. They promoted tourism to theParks and better roads for motorists. During theearly days of the automobile, when cars got stuckin the mud, they were still being towed out byhorses, and gravity-fed fuel lines causedproblems up steep grades. Only the rich couldafford travel by train or by horse to the NationalParks, but the 1920 inaugural tour opened thedoor for the “everyman,” with his newlyaffordable automobile, to visit them as well.2-part series begins airing Tuesday, July7 at 9pm

ON THE LAKE: Life and Love in a Distant Place tells the truestory of the tuberculosis epidemic in America in the 1900s andglobally today through the lives of those that were infected andwho died — but also of those who survived. Airs Monday, July27 at 10pm

LEWIS & CLARK: CROSSING THECENTURIES traces the Lewis and Clarkexpedition’s route from St.Louis, Missourito the Oregon Coast. The documentaryfeatures stunning aerial shots of thedramatic terrain the expedition faced,including Idaho’s Lolo and Lemhi Passesand the White Cliffs area along the MissouriRiver in Montana. The program alsocaptures scenes that appear much as theexplorers knew them, and documents 200 years of alterations brought about by dams,highways, cities, farms and ranches. CROSSING THE CENTURIES, narrated byAcademy Award-winning actor George Kennedy, features Lewis and Clark historians,chronicles opening events for the bicentennial celebration and examines the legacy ofthis landmark 1804 trip.
