Historical Museum celebrates additions to collection

A camera collection and a Hugo Wertheim piano have become part of the extraordinary range on display at the Mount Morgan Historical Museum. An official presentation was held last Tuesday as families from the Rockhampton and Emu Park districts passed on the cherished possessions in memory of their ties to the local area, and appreciation of the Mount Morgan Museum’s work.

The official morning tea, held on March 22, saw locals and guests welcome members from each family as the new items were introduced to the Museum through informative and personal stories relating their history.

The first to be officially accepted was the camera collection, donated by the Johnson family of Rockhampton. The collection, which includes several pieces of movie and still photography equipment, is accompanied by a write up on Mr Ken Johnson, who was the proud owner and collector for many years. Ken, who passed away in 2003, had a definite passion for photography, and as his family explained, this is evident in his collection, which began in the 1950’s.

Over the years, the significant assortment grew, as Ken adapted his skills and technology progressed. The collection is testament to both his, and wife Dell’s skill and creativity which was well recognised in the area. Using homemade props and toys set up on the kitchen table, the couple pioneered home movie animation techniques in the 50’s; together winning local awards from the Movie and Camera Club. Transition into video works followed in the late 1970’s and later into digital photography and computerised animation.

Ken’s wife Dell, and son Lex proudly attended the presentation, who said although born in Rockhampton, Ken came from a family strongly tied with the Mount Morgan district and today his collection is now available to others as tribute to his passion, and these ties. Story continues page 3.

How exciting to meet a newcomer to our town who speaks so highly of it. These folk visited many areas before deciding on Mount Morgan for retirement. They enjoy the weather, locality, infrastructure and its people. They had visited many parts of N.T. Queensland and northern NSW before deciding on here. Their only complaint on their first visit was of the rubbish in Morgan street gutters when there are so many bins available. So come on folks Think Clean …Be Tidy.

So many positive things happening around town including, the Grand Hotel dining room and Cellars now operating, the opening of the White Elephant Burger Bar (Rainbow Café ), Tipperary River crossing, IGAs upgraded vegies and fruit area and of course the excellent presentation of our “Argus”; so many items to show good progress.

While preparing this article the fire siren did its practise siren and it brought back many of the historic fires the Mount has experienced. Going right back to 1896 when a number of shops in East Street were burnt down and at that era East Street was the main street of the town. In 1922 the shops of Kelly & Sons General Store, Duffy Bros Drapery Shop and the auctioneering business of the Hempenstall Bros also gutted with fire. These businesses were located on the top side of the Leichhardt Hotel in Morgan Street. Then on Anzac night of 1923 fire destroyed the old School of Arts with shops both right and left of the building and also on the left the Imperial Hotel, and Saint Elmo’s Boarding House; both most impressive buildings in those days.

Possibly the fire causing the greatest disaster was when the 650ft level shaft caught fire at the mine on Sunday 11th December 1925. Even with intense effort of staff and volunteers (many employees were on strike when this happened) it was necessary to flood the mine and the result of course was its closure. Thanks to a determined man named Adam Boyd it re-opened years later as an open cut mine. Another fire of great concern was on 11th December 1939 when the entire shops of Morgan Street from the now Doctor’s surgery to the brick wall of Ramms building were gutted. The shops were all rebuilt but there was a great deal of inconvenience at that time.

On 9th January 1957 and the 5th September 1964 the Calliungal Hotel situated on the corner of East and Morgan streets and the Criterion Hotel at East St. Ext. and Byrnes Parade corner went up in flames on those respective dates. From early times of 27 hotels we now only have four in business.

Our last fire of a special building was the destruction of the Olympia Theatre on 3rd February 1976. The Mount has had many fires of houses but thankfully not in the number that were burnt down in the years 1925 to 1928 when the mine closed..

Also accepted on the morning, was a Hugo Wertheim Piano; given on ‘permanent’ loan to the Mount Morgan Museum by Mrs Kylee Matthews.

Originally owned by Mrs Jane James; a long term resident of Baree, the piano was passed down the line of generations: first to daughter Ivy Stratford, who in turn passed it on to her son Kevin Stratford, who recently passed it on to his niece Kylee Matthews.

It is believed the Hugo Wertheim may have been imported from Frankfurt Germany, as far back as the 1800s.

For many years, the piano brought joy to much of the community; details of the new inclusion explain: ‘Mrs Ivy Stratford, affectionately known as Aunty Ivy to most of Mt Morgan, lived in Baree and used to play for the old time dances around Baree and district for many years. Everybody used to have sing-a-longs in those days and used to stand around the piano and sing the old favourites like Daisy, She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain, Roll out the Barrel etc.’

As well as the loved entertainment it provided, the piano was also used by many children over the years for piano lessons.

In absence of Kylee Matthews, who was unable to attend the ceremony, Carolynn Farmer, Marion, and Charlie Stratford proudly discussed the happy memories they have of the piano during the morning tea.

The families, who will be also covering maintenance and upkeep of the piano said they are truly happy it is in an environment where it will be appreciated for years to come.

The entirety of the Museum’s collection is open for viewing from 10 am to 4pm each day.

Houses were burnt to gain the insurance money so relocation was a possibility as no work was available in the town. The lesson for us today is to have working smoke alarms and take every precaution.

Keep up to date with the Argus for future attractions, and THINK CLEAN - BE TIDY.

On Sunday morning, 20th March, the congregation of Saint Mary’s Anglican Church celebrated during the Service of Holy Communion, the blessing of a cabinet containing two historic restored Bibles.

The Bibles, which date back to the 19th Century, were donated by Mount Morgan families some time ago, and recently restored.

This Ceremony, which was performed by Rev. Father Paul Gribble, was in memory of Ruth Brewster. Ruth with her family (Nash family) was actively involved in Saint Mary’s all of her life.

Ruth’s family: including husband Gerald, Sons- Roger and Owen, daughter- Alison, sister- Mrs Evelyn Gilbar; together with their families joined the congregation to honour Ruth’s memory and involvement in the life of Saint Mary’s. Family members journeyed as far from Rockhampton and Bundaberg to join the Service.

Rotary RecognitionAt the recent Rotary St. Patrick’s Day annual fundraiser on Sunday 27th March 2011, Joe James was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of his tireless work in the community when he was an active Rotarian and also his ongoing work as an honorary Rotarian of the Rotary Club of Mount Morgan. This is a significant award and is the highest honour that can be given by the club to a deserving Rotarian or community member.

Paul Harris formed the world’s first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905. His intention was to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth. Today, Paul Harris Society contributions to The Rotary Foundation, support a wide range of humanitarian grants and educational programs; enabling Rotarians to bring hope and promote international understanding throughout the world.

Joe James espouses this award by being involved in the construction and maintenance of the bus shelters along with the Rotary look-out in East Street. His giving towards Rotary was even obvious on Sunday with the donation of the first prize towards the raffle on the day - of one of his specially made and highly sought after tool boxes. The partial collapse of the Tipperary Point Swinging Bridge generated significant public interest, presenting Council with a challenging decision regarding the most appropriate outcome for the community while being financially responsible. To assist in reaching a decision, Council recently engaged the services of Opus International to prepare a Rehabilitation Options Report that provides an assessment against various qualitative and quantitative criteria for three main options with a number of sub options. The options below were assessed:Option 1 – No remaining evidence of the Swinging BridgeOption 2 – Restore/retain Bridge or parts as historical artefact•2 (a) – Remove debris and construct an interpretive facility•2 (b) – Remove debris and reinstate one bridge approach•2 (c) – Reassemble entire bridge from debris as an artefactOption 3 – Restore/construct new bridge as trafficable;•3 (a) – Reassemble entire bridge from debris and strengthen•3 (b) – Remove debris and construct new replica bridge and interpretative facility.

Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor, Councillor Brad Carter said the deterioration and eventual collapse of the Swinging Bridge is unfortunate, and the decision to either restore or replace the bridge is an extremely difficult one.“Finding a balance between limited funds, community expectations, and preservation of historically significant places is extremely challenging,” Cr Carter said.“I, and my fellow Councillors, believe that the only way forward in this matter is to take the various options and estimated costs for each of the options to the Mount Morgan community before further exploring funding and construction.“However, no matter which option is preferred Council will still need to weigh it up against the other projects being delivered to the Mount Morgan community in the context of Council’s budget deliberations.”Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc and Rockhampton Regional Council are working on a suitable date for the community consultation. Residents unable to attend will have the opportunity to comment on their preferred option through a survey, which will be available from the MMPAD office in the near future.

The John Cani Estate Aged Hostel celebrated all things Irish this Saint Patrick’s Day, as residents were joined by family and friends for a top of the mornin’ celebration on Thursday, March 17.

The third holiday celebration for the John Cani this year treated guests to fun and laughter offered in the form of morning tea and live entertainment.

The morning’s entertainment included Irish Poetry read by Alma Graham, Irish readings by Freda McDougall and song and music by Freda, Tom O’Brien, Ron and Brian Zemek.

Local Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations

Long term locals, Alex Teeny, Stan and Sandra Lean celebrated Irish beginnings this Saint Patrick’s Day, with their annual tradition of finger food and Irish whiskeys.

The date has long seen the trio come together to celebrate its special significance; with Irish born, Alex, celebrating his roots, and March 17 being the date Stan and Sandra arrived in Mount Morgan in 1984; Stan taking up position as O/C Police - a position he held until his retirement in 2003.

In keeping with the festive mood of the trio’s celebration; Alex is called Alex MacTeeney and Stan, Stanley O’Lean. Stan is of Scottish descent and Alex is naturally of Irish descent so both have a name change for their St Paddy’s Day fun.

For local residents, Anne and Dasher Hunt, a scheduled holiday to New Zealand proved memorable in more ways than expected. Recently returning home from the area, following the devastation in Christchurch, the couple describe their time and experience.

The trip, which began on Tuesday, February 22, saw Anne and Dasher board a flight from Rockhampton to Brisbane at 10.30 am, for a connecting flight to Christchurch, New Zealand. On arrival at the Brisbane Airport, Anne and Dasher were informed of the devastation that had occurred to the area of Christchurch while they were in the air.

This devastation resulted in all flights to Christchurch deviated. Anne and Dasher instead landed in the North Island in Wellington at 1.30am, a city 300klms away from their desired destination.

Keen to get their trip back on track and to visit friends living in Christchurch Anne and Dasher kick-started it with a few hours sleep in a hire car as there were no rooms available in the surrounding area. Heading south, they caught a ferry to Picton and secured a lift to Nelson and accommodation. Waiting for the all clear to enter Christchurch, Anne and Dasher spent the next week holidaying until reaching friends in Christchurch on Tuesday March 8.

While visiting, the area received three aftershocks; with the major of the three being magnitude 4.3. “At 10pm we experienced the major aftershock,” Dasher said. “And this one was more than enough for us.”

Describing the area where the couple were residing, which was a short distance from the major devastation Anne and Dasher saw the street covered in dust, with roads uneven and full of holes. This damage was minor in comparison to what was seen on passing the closed off devastation such a short distance away.

“It was devastating to see the destruction that occurred to Christchurch. Buildings held up only by their metal frame work, car parks and shopping centres cracked – it was a mess.” Dasher said.

“Our hearts really went out to the locals... one thing that really stood out to us was the resilience of the locals there. They reminded us much of the Aussies here – sticking together and making headway.”

Harmony Day Celebrations are set for Mount Morgan next month with “Damper at Dusk by the Dam”; as a variety of groups have come together to see Harmony Day celebrated in a number of events locally.

Each year, Harmony Day is celebrated Australia wide, with its official date on March 21. Growing in popularity over the years, the date is nationally recognised as a day to encourage all Australians to celebrate the Nation’s cultural diversity. Since beginning in 1999, organisations, groups and businesses have staged thousands of Harmony Day Events. This year, local celebrations have been listed for Mount Morgan, Gracemere, Rockhampton and Yeppoon.

Kicking off, the event listing began in Gracemere last Saturday; with a fun filled afternoon of tree planting, a community barbecue and family entertainment at Cedric Archer Park.

This Friday, April 1 is the date set for Rockhampton’s celebrations; with a multicultural concert and dinner at the Shearing Shed, Heritage Village- Rockhampton at 6.30pm.

Family entertainment and fun is planned for Mount Morgan celebrations; with the event titled Damper at Dusk by the Dam. The afternoon welcomes all to come together and join the celebrations at the No.7 Big Dam at 4pm on April 16 for damper and dancing with the Capricorn Dance Exchange.

Local resident, and Mount Morgan Multicultural Mob Vice President, Nicholai van Tonslamann, encourages all to share in the event.

“Harmony day is all about coming together and celebrating our diversity.” Nicholai said. “Like many places Australia wide, Mount Morgan is made up of a variety of cultures – and it is wonderful that we are able to have an afternoon dedicated to this. It is sure to be one for all to enjoy.”

Yeppoon’s celebrations will be Saturday, May 8 at the Yeppoon Foreshore, 10am with ‘tastes of the world’.

So come along and enjoy the fun! For general details phone: 4923 5600. Mount Morgan details: 4938 2679.

Volunteers play a vital role in providing a wide range of services and initiatives to our communities and we can never underestimate the contribution they make to our society. A certificate may not seem like much but it at least goes some way to recognising that contribution and saying ‘thank you’ on behalf of the community they have served so selflessly for so many years. VOLUNTEERING QUEENSLAND: Volunteering Queensland has recently launched their Emergency Volunteering portal at www.emergencyvolunteering.com.au. As well as coordinating natural disaster community resilience projects in which it was identified, that following the recent natural disasters in Queensland, it is important to create a space in which people can process the experience (whether or not you were directly affected), learn form it and think about how to rebuild a more resilient community moving forward. A valuable tool which I am sure will provide much needed support in our communities.

Ingredients ⅓ cup pine nuts1kg lean ground lamb½ green capsicum, finely diced½ red capsicum, finely diced1 onion, finely diced2 cloves garlic (minced)2 large eggs2 tsp ground pepper2 tsp dried basil1 tsp dried rosemary½ tsp salt150g feta cheese, crumbled200g of can diced tomato 1 garnish: dried parsley (fresh preferably)

Cook pine nuts in a shallow frypan at 170 degrees Celsius. Stirring occasionally, 5 minutes or until toasted not burnt.

Combine pine nuts and ingredients except the canned tomatoes; press half of mixture into a lightly greased 23cm x 13cm loaf-pan. Sprinkle with feta cheese, and press remaining lamb mixture over cheese so the feta is locked up inside the meat loaf.

Bake at 190 degrees Celsius for 1 ½ hours. Remove from pan, and place on a rack in a broiler pan to catch any juice that will run over the sides - trust me it saves you cleaning your oven. Pour tomato sauce over top; bake 10 more minutes or until done. Garnish, if desired.

Serve with toasted pita or turkish bread & yes for a nice Greek salad look back to past issue of the Argus for what is in this salad. This will go well with chips but try spraying with olive oil and baking instead of deep frying. Happy eating!

Now I hear you, “Oh no not meat loaf again”, but this meat loaf is a world away from what you are used to. I got this recipe from a grandmother of a Greek landlord we had back in the 1980s. She was 97 back then so R.I.P Yana Katmatos, we love your meat loaf. I have cut the amount of garlic in the recipe and increased the amount of pepper, and red capsicum instead of just green. Serves 8.

9MOUNT MORGANGOLF CLUB

The ‘Mount Morgan Men’s Golf Open Championship’ is coming up on 17th of April.

The event, which usually brings around 50 to 60 competitors from around our region, along with their supporters, is a big event on the Mount Morgan Calendar. If you would like to enter; the fee is $26.

Golf Club Membership fees for 2011 are due and should be in by the end of March at the latest:

Full membership is still at a low $100.00 for adults.

Social membership is only $55.00 but does not entitle entry to competitions.

Junior membership is $50.00. Official Mount Morgan Golf Club tee shirts are also on sale.

To pay fees or enter the golf open, contact our treasurer, Wally Edwards. His home phone contact is 49382879 and mobile: 0428828830.

As you know we have had a lot of rain in recent months, which has reduced our activities but increased the grass growth! It is taking continuous mowing to keep the course in playable condition but it is greener than any time in living history! We also received truckloads of dirt from the hospital excavations, which will help to landscape some areas. We would have received more but for the trucks bogging down in the wet ground!

Remember the Thursday morning social meet, which is free to members and only $10.00 for guests. It will be a fun way to get some exercise and social contact!

To be sure, to be sure, to be sure. It was in wonderful conditions on Sunday 27 March that Rotary held its annual St. Paddy’s Day bowls at the Welfare Bowls Club in Mount Morgan. It looks like the Irish weather Gods were smiling on us.

Everyone had a whale of a time and the club raised around $250 towards the flood appeal and local needs. A big thank you to all who turned out and to all the wonderful helpers at the event allowing it to run smoothly. Thanks to the Welfare Bowls Club for hosting the event and kindly donating the green fees towards the day.

Union News: Mount Morgan boys down

Dawson ValleyThe Mount Morgan Rugby Union team kicked off the 2011 Season with a win last Saturday, March 26, defeating Dawson Valley at Blackwater.

The close game saw the Mount Morgan boys hold on for a tight 26-24 victory. Mount Morgan started well, taking an early lead, and doggedly fought off a Dawson Valley comeback to clench the match.

Commendations go to all players, in particular the new recruits. Man of the Match was a split decision; going to Nathan O’Brien, and Josh (Punchy) Lanham. Try scorers for the day were Willy Hayden with 3, and Lucas Marianetti with 1. Conversions by Scott Toby – 2, and Jamie Blake- 1. A home game for the local boys is set for April 9, Newman Oval, 3pm against the Boars.

Pictured above: The Mount Morgan Rugby Union Team 2011 following their victory over Dawson Valley.

A big thank you to Alex Teeney, the wonderful Irish Rotarian, who donated the prizes. A thank you also to Joe James for donating the first prize of the raffle, one of his much-sought-after tool boxes.

The winners on the day were Chris Izzard, Peter Wills and Fred Sealey, while the runners-up were Sharon Sleaford, Mark Davey and Andy Johnson. A great day had by all and hopefully see you all again next St. Paddy’s Day.

Great news – Council has officially removed all water restrictions across the Region. This means no more water restrictions for Mount Morgan! Keep up the good work conserving water around your house and garden. For handy WaterWise tips, visit Fitzroy River Water’s website at www.frw.com.au

An update on the Tipperary Point Swinging Bridge – At the Council meeting on 22 March we decided to take the information provided in the report out to the Mount Morgan community, showing the various options and the estimated costs for each option before exploring means to fund and construct a replacement entity. I will let you know when this consultation will take place.

As you may know, prior to the 'Tree of Knowledge' falling down, Council had engaged a design company to develop a scope design and concept plan for Morgan Street. The tree was originally planned to be incorporated in the initial designs of the Morgan Street Concept Plan and I assure you the new concept plans will offer options to recognise the tree. We have had a few hold ups but Council officers are meeting this week with the consultant to discuss options for the concept plan. We should have a clearer idea of the concept plans in a couple of weeks. It will be important that we recognise and interpret the history surrounding the tree and the cutter and the main street in whatever concept we eventually accept.

A reminder that with Council's rates that have been issued for the second half of this financial year, the final date for payment to receive the prompt payment discount is Monday 18 April 2011. Be sure to make payment by the deadline to receive your discount.

Please contact me on 0408 060 763 if I can help you with any of your Council matters.

BE HEARD Rockhampton Region

If you are passionate about the place where you live, you now have the opportunity to help shape the future of our community and BE HEARD.

Two projects that will detail the future we want are currently being developed. The Community Plan will identify our community’s vision and priorities, and outline the future direction of our Region for 10 years, from July 2012.

The Rockhampton Regional Council Planning Scheme will provide a consistent approach to the management of land use and development in our Region.

This is an exciting time for us all to have a say on the future of our community and BE HEARD! For more information go to the BE HEARD website - beheard.rrc.qld.gov.au or call Council on 1300 22 55 77.An initiative of Rockhampton Regional Council.
