For those hot summer days when you just want to get inside, try these programs in the Portrait Gallery in the Second Bank of the U.S.: • George Washington’s Band of Brothers
– Join a park ranger for a tour of the gallery that introduces Washington and his Generals who, against all odds, led the soldiers of the Continental Army to victory over the armies of Great Britain and won American Independence. Daily at 1-1:30 p.m.
• Stories of Struggle – Join a park ranger for a slide program highlighting the stories of the people, places and events surrounding the founding and early years of the U.S. Daily at 4-4:30 p.m.
Or get outside and experience the park with these Park Ranger-led Walking Tours: • Stories from the Past – This walking
tour highlights the diverse people and stories of the period. On Tuesdays and Thursdays the tour will focus on George Washington and his time in Philadelphia. Signers’ Garden, daily, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
• Dr. Franklin’s Philadelphia – Learn about Franklin, the relevant revolution-ary, and his many contributions to his city, his country and the world. Tour begins by the arbor in the Franklin Court Courtyard, daily, 2:30-3:30 p.m.
• History Beneath Our Feet – Explore what we learn about the past by digging into the ground, from the recent President’s House site, the excavation of Franklin Court and more. President’s House Site, daily, 4-5 p.m.
If you’re looking for something after hours, there’s no better tour than the Twilight Tours, presented by the Friends of Independence. Enjoy a walking introduction to Independence National Historical Park so you are ready to explore it the next day. hether you have a couple of hours or a couple of days to spend, check out our
suggested itineraries below to help you make the best use of your time. Begin your visit at the Independence Visitor Center, where you can pick up your Independence Hall tickets. You won’t want to miss the National Constitution Center, with its blockbuster George Washington exhibit, and the newest additions to Indepen-dence Mall, the President’s House Site, the National Museum of American Jewish History and Liberty 360 in the PECO Theater. Inside, we’ve included everything else you need to know to have a great trip. There’s information about amazing Adventure Tours and a variety of free programs (pages 4 & 5), a map (on the back) and lots more valuable information to help make your visit a great one.
Some of the most unique and rewarding experi-ences you’ll have in Historic Philadelphia will be meeting the History Makers – people from the past who will share their uniquely interesting stories – and at the Once Upon A Nation Storytelling Benches, where you’ll hear little known tales from our nation’s early years. See the map for locations, and plan to visit some or all of the 13 benches during the day to hear what the history books left out.From meeting Betsy Ross in her upholstery shop, to drilling with the Continental Army in a military muster, nothing brings history to life like the History Makers. The program chart on page 4 will help you find them and sprinkled through the itineraries below are some more tips from these 18th- & 19th-century citizens to help you locate them during your visit.

Valley Forge Secrets & Spies
George Washington needs help. There’s rumor of a plot to have him kidnapped at Valley Forge. Meet the General as he enlists children and adults to join his American spy network to uncover the traitors involved.
Learn 18th-century spy techniques including invisible ink, counterespio-nage, and looking for secret messages as young guests work with operatives to foil the plot.

Valley Forge After Hours
Travel back in time to June 1778, a turning point in the Revolutionary War, spend an exciting evening at the famous encampment at Valley Forge, and see what nights were like for the Continental Army. Enjoy a traditional Colonial dinner with Martha Washington before checking in at General Washington’s Headquar-ters and then relax around the group campfire and listen to the soldiers’ tales.

Each Saturday of the summer, have breakfast with one of our most influential Founding Fathers and follow it with a kid-friendly (stroller-friendly) “whodunit.”Adults and children can chat with Dr. Franklin, ask questions about his life and work and even pose for pictures, all while enjoying a yummy meal, during Breakfast with Ben 9-10:30 a.m. Saturdays through Labor Day at the Independence Visitor Center.After breakfast, kids will become junior detectives, as they search for clues to solve the mystery of the missing copy of the Declaration of Independence.
The adventure begins at 11 a.m. at the Historic Philadelphia Center, 6th & Chestnut Streets and continues throughout Independence National Historical Park, ending at noon. You’ll meet lots of colonial “characters” and even get another visit with Ben Franklin, himself!Tickets are $23 for children ages 3-10; $30 for those 11 and older; children 2 and under are free. Junior Ranger Programs Junior Ranger programs offer a fun way for kids to learn about American History. Through Junior Ranger activities, games and puzzles, participants from 6-14 years of age learn all about the park and can earn Junior Ranger badges. Pick up an Independence National Historical Park Junior Ranger Activity Booklet, complete the activities and return it to the Independence Visitor Center to receive your badge. The Independence Visitor Center, 6th & Market Streets, opens daily at 8:30 a.m. Junior Ranger Activity Booklets and badges are also available at the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, 532 North 7th Street, open Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial, 301 Pine Street, open Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 4 p.m., and the Deshler-Morris House/Germantown White House, 5442 Germantown Avenue, open Friday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
