February Profile: Suzanne V Paddock Artist Member of Bower Center Exhibit Committee Although she admits that “it sure doesn't get the laundry done,” Suzanne Paddock loves to “get lost” in her studio with life's mundane demands suspended and time put on hold...or forgotten about entirely. In this way she finds she is able to “calm my mind and push away every day thoughts so I can focus on creating.” To Suzanne, this is a repeated choice she makes as often as possible to move from the stresses of life to the pleasures found in creative expression. When she has arrived at this place in

her mind, Suzanne finds she can “tell stories and chew on life's questions by putting paint on a canvas.” Upon reflection, this artist sees this journey as both universal and very personal. The universal aspect is experienced by any number of artists and artisans that Suzanne knows and with whom she has shared thoughts and experiences. Furthermore, the personal journey is intense, so intense at times that “you seem to be lost to the rest of the world.” On a typical work day, Suzanne goes into her studio between 8-9 in the morning, puts on music, “moves things around and pulls out some pieces for consideration.” Each of these steps helps her on this “conscious, meditative journey” that leads to a productive connection between her mind and her paintbrush. Once the journey is completed, Suzanne gets down to painting for the rest of the day. Always striving to paint well technically as well as creatively, Suzanne spends a lot of studio time working with various techniques to manipulate the paint to achieve what she wants on canvas. She thinks this “practice” enables her to not “stumble” when expressing her creativity on canvas. Born in New York City and raised in Putnam County, New York, Suzanne moved to Virginia in 2012 and embarked on a new kind of journey – living in what she calls rurality. One of the first things she found upon moving to this area is that there is no such thing as quickly running errands. In fact, Suzanne goes so far as to say that “time moves differently here.” Gone are the New York pressures of time constraints, chaotic life, masses of people and, in their places, are opportunities to live a different lifestyle. As Suzanne sees it, “This area offers both a decrease in the population and more community because literally most people know one another here.” Another revelation was that the anonymity she experienced in more densely populated areas was virtually non-existent here. That anonymity was how she, as Suzanne puts it, was “able to hold on to a sense of privacy or personal space” amid

the noise and constant commotion of urban living. In Bedford, “privacy,” Suzanne continues, “seems to be very important and highly valued, and it is more literal and real.” From the “big sky” to the expanses of land and its beauty found in Central Virginia, Suzanne finds that she “doesn't have to carve out, conjure up, or deliberately isolate herself” to get a personal space where creativity can thrive. Following Suzanne's 1993 graduation from SUNY New Paltz with a degree in Visual Arts and a concentration in painting and drawing, Suzanne worked in California and New York as a production artist, a position that required her to clean up copy for print-ing or create production art prior to it being approved for printing. During those years she traveled and ultimately settled down by marrying a man she had known from high school. In 1995 she was awarded a solo show titled “Lucid Passions” at a private gallery in Paterson, New York, where she sold half of her exhibited pieces. During these

years she even “moved away from art” for a time, but found “it came rushing back as an immeasurable need during a time of grief.”

WRITE NOW WRITE NOW is a group of Bedford writers who meet at Bower Center at 7 pm on the third Thursday of each month to share our enthusiasm for writing. We are a very mixed group, most have never been published, and we are young and older, male and female, with varied backgrounds. It is a very social group, with emphasis on creativity and free expression. Contact information is on page 2. Why Do We Write By John Ketwig - Jan 2016 loved that piece. It can be drudgery Occasionally rewarded With moments of clarity And self-satisfaction One writes With purpose It is never really A random act To inform Enlighten, entertain Sometimes just to Get something out That will not come Via any other avenue Sometimes I write To organize my thoughts Or catalogue my feelings To record an insight Into the sacred Mystery that is life We write, I think To express ourselves A curious word As a young mother Expresses her milk Into a bottle To nourish her child When she must be away We milk our mind And save the outpouring On paper, or In an electronic Thought basket In hopes The outcome Might be nourishing To someone

Suzanne Paddock … cont’d from page 11 In the early 2000 Suzanne was living and working in Kingston, New York, while she continued to grow personally and professionally. It was in Kingston that Suzanne established a studio and representation in its lovely Mid-Town district. This was followed by finding friends and gallery representation in neighboring Woodstock, New York, where she showed continuously in local venues for sev-eral years and even participated in 100 Artists/100 Dreams, an international dream exploration project. Another big change came in 2012 when Suzanne, her husband, their black Lab, and – to use her words – a small “tribe” of cats moved south to Central Virginia and began to experience rurality first hand. After spending quite a bit of time involved with The Electric Company Artists' Co-op during her first few years in the area, she has now stepped away from TECAC although she says she still “enjoys seeing new exhibits there” and visiting with artists at Art on Depot studios. In March of 2016, Suzanne will join water colorist Perri Mason with an exhibit at the Lynchburg Humane Society. Later in 2016 she will be showing at TKP, 309 N Bridge St, in Bedford, June through the end of September. She currently has work hanging at the Blue Ridge Animal Hospital. Whether working in her studio, gathering with other local artists, or running time-consuming errands in Bedford, Suzanne Paddock adds a new and interesting dimension to our area and to the arts community in general. www.suzannevpaddock.com
