HISPANICS AT THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY The California State University is the university of choice for Hispanics. The CSU system is the largest system in the country, with 23 campuses and seven offcampus centers. Today, 23 percent of CSU students are Hispanic, 19.7 percent of the CSU staff is Hispanic, 8.1 percent of the CSU faculty is Hispanic and 18 CSU campuses are listed in Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education’s annual “Top 100.” Each CSU campus has its own identity, with distinct student populations and programs. Yet all share the same mission—to provide highquality, affordable higher education to meet the changing workforce needs of the people of California. The CSU plays a critical role in preparing outstanding candidates for the job market. With 93,000 annual graduates, the CSU is the state’s greatest producer of bachelor’s degrees and drives California’s economy in information technology, life sciences, agriculture, business, education, international trade, public administration, entertainment and multimedia industries. CSU Campuses in Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education’s “Top 100” Eighteen of the CSU’s 23 campuses are among Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education’s annual “Top 100,” a national list of colleges and universities that conferred the most bachelor’s degrees on Hispanics. The five CSU campuses not listed include smaller, specialized and rural campuses that lack substantial local Hispanic populations, so they do not hit the “radar” of the magazine. HispanicServing Institutions— Twelve CSU campuses have attained Hispanic Serving Institution status, defined as an institution that has at least 25 percent Hispanic fulltime equivalent (FTE) enrollment: Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, Fresno, Fullerton, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Monterey Bay, Northridge, Pomona, San Bernardino and Stanislaus. Hispanic Leaders at the CSU— Two Trustees of the California State University are Latinos: Melinda Guzman, a partner of the law firm of Goldsberry Freeman Guzman & Ditora, LLP; and Henry Mendoza, managing partner of Mendoza, Berger & Company and past chair of the California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Four CSU campus presidents are Hispanic: Dr. Ruben Armiñana, Sonoma State University; Dr. Mildred García, California State University, Dominguez Hills and the CSU’s first Latina president; Dr. Alexander Gonzalez, California State University, Sacramento; and Dr. J. Michael Ortiz, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. www.calstate.edu/impact >

HISPANICS AT THE CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY The California State University is the university of choice for Hispanics. The CSU system is the largest system in the country, with 23 campuses and seven offcampus centers. Today, 23 percent of CSU students are Hispanic, 19.7 percent of the CSU staff is Hispanic, 8.1 percent of the CSU faculty is Hispanic and 18 CSU campuses are listed in Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education’s annual “Top 100.”

Each CSU campus has its own identity, with distinct student populations and programs.

HispanicServing Institutions—

• Twelve CSU campuses have attained HispanicServing Institution status, defined as an institution that has at least 25 percent Hispanic fulltime equivalent (FTE) enrollment: Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, Fresno, Fullerton, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Monterey Bay, Northridge, Pomona, San Bernardino and Stanislaus.

Hispanic Leaders at the CSU—

• Two Trustees of the California State University are Latinos: Melinda Guzman, a partner of the law firm of Goldsberry Freeman Guzman & Ditora, LLP; and Henry Mendoza, managing partner of Mendoza, Berger & Company and past chair of the California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

• Four CSU campus presidents are Hispanic: Dr. Ruben Armiñana, Sonoma State University; Dr. Mildred García, California State University, Dominguez Hills and the CSU’s first Latina president; Dr. Alexander Gonzalez, California State University, Sacramento; and Dr. J. Michael Ortiz, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
