Mexican• people with nationality of Mexico

Chicano / Chicana

• Initially… people with ancestry in the American south-west, which was part of Mexico prior to the U.S.-Mexico War

•In 1960s… Mexican-Americans and Mexicans living in the U.S.

 

Spanish• a language

• people with nationality of Spain

Mexican-American • people with birth or ancestry

from the country of Mexico, but who were born in, or have become citizens of the United States.

Latino / Latina

• people with ancestry in Latin America, which includes Mexico, Central / South America and the Caribbean

• refers to the regions of N. and S. America with Latin-based languages and cultures (French, Spanish and Portuguese)
