Hispanic people have done a lot for Florida. There have been many

Latin Americans that have inuenced Florida’s history, including Spanish

eplorer !edro "enende#. He has done a lot Florida, li$e founding St.

Augustine, building and protecting a colony, and converting the natives to

%atholic.

 To begin &ith, "enende# founded St. Augustine. "enende# &as sent to

start a colony in Florida by !hillip '', &ho became $ing in ())*. He planned to

sail to Fort %aroline, but discovered that the path &as bloc$ed by French

ships. He changed direction and sailed to a smaller harbor on the coast

Florida. His men built a fort. +n September , ()*) o-cially named it St.

Augustine, &hich became the rst ma/or settlement in the 0nited States. St.

Augustine is a city that holds a lot of Floridian history and is a big tourism

attraction, and "enende# founded it.

Secondly, "enende# built and protected a colony. 1hile building a fort

St. Augustine, the French %aroline, a nearby French settlement, tried to

attac$ St. Augustine, but they &ere hit by a storm and all of their ships &ere

&rec$ed. "enende# and his men too$ advantage of this and attac$ed Fort

%aroline. "enende# &as able to not only help build, but protect this colony

from the French settlement.

Finally, "enende# converted natives to %atholic. +ne of "enende#’s

goals &as to convert the 2ative Americans to the %atholic Faith. He as$ed for

all ships coming from Spain to bring priests. Those priests became

missionaries, &hich led Spanish missions in Florida. 3ecause of his &or$,
