Discussion
General
Overall, the equipment is clean and in good working order. The radome has very minor dirt and grime. The radome
interior is clean and dry with no evidence of water leakage.
The radome base legs are in the same condition as the last visit in March of this year (2007). The legs show some
rust, but are not in need of immediate attention or repair. Sanding and repainting is recommended at the ship’s next
scheduled port maintenance.
The Inverter Mounting Plates are located inside the radome and are mounted on the pedestal legs. Under usual
conditions these plates are of no concern. However, they could cause some damage to the rear of the reflector in if
power is lost in rough weather. Some minor scrapes have already been noted. The corners of the plates should be
trimmed back to avoid any further damage to the reflector.
System Operation
The crew reported some tracking problems, and loss of tracking during rapid turns or very rough seas. While
checking the DAC parameters it was noted that the STEP INTEGRAL parameter of the DAC was set 0000, and
the AZ & EL STEP SIZES were set to 0003. The crew stated that they had experimented with these settings and
that these provided the best tracking performance of the antenna. The usual STEP SIZE settings for Dishscan are
“0000”. During the maintenance visit the STEP SIZES were returned to zero (“0000”). This improved the Eb/No
value on the Comtech modem by approx. 1.5 dBm. However, the crew was told that if further tracking issues
occurred they could reset the STEP SIZE parameters to “0003” and report any problems.
