Neil pulled the buggy to a stop in front of the house and helped Sarah out. ―It‘sbeen a long day.‖ He held her hands, not wishing to break contact but knowing it was inevitable. Her skin was warm and soft. The moonlight made her blond hair shine as it tumbled over her shoulders.

Her eyes met his and he saw somethingin them he hadn‘t seen in any other woman‘s. It was a promise. A promise of hope, of happiness, and most importantly, of love.Taking a deep breath, he said, ―I am glad we‘re married.‖

She smiled and whispered, ―I am too.‖He leaned forward, ready to kiss her, recalling how sweet their kiss had beenwhen they said their vows, and suddenly, the front door opened. Startled, he jerked back and released her hands. He tipped his hat over his eyes so that his mother

wouldn‘t detect his embarrassment.―Are you married?‖ the woman asked asshe bounded down the steps with Luke inher arms.―Yes, we are,‖ he replied. ―I should put the horse and buggy away.‖ Turning to

June 1882Neil Craftsman handed his wife thedivorce papers, glad to be rid of themockery they called a marriage.Cassie grabbed the crisp white papersand turned to her lover and smugly smiled. ―I told you he would sign them.‖The fifty-year-old man with graying blond hair and a neatly trimmed mustachenodded, placing his arm through hers.―Good Though Neil was thirty-seven, the manwho succeeded in taking his wife fromhim made him feel as if he were still achild whenever he peered down at him.

Refusing to let John McCarthy note hisapprehension, he shrugged. Turning hisattention Cassie, he asked, ―Will you say good-bye to Emily before you go to St.Louis?‖She twirled her wavy raven locks around her fingers, glancing demurely at John.

―When are we due to leave?‖Neil gritted his teeth. True, he silently thanked the miserable woman for leavingher daughter with him, but Emily would be devastated if she left without

explaining that she had Ruth Ann Nordin2to leave. Not that he wished to tell Emily the real reason for Cassie‘s departure.

The poor girl suffered enough with thelack of motherly affection she received for the past seven years of her life. Hegulped the lump in his throat, his heart aching for the innocent child. Say yes,Cassie. For once, think of someone other than yourself.―It would mean the world to Emily if yousaw her one more time,‖ Neil insisted when John bent down to whisper something in her ear that made her giggle.John frowned at him and straightened hisback. ―I‘m afraid we must board the next train as soon as we finalize this divorce. I

wish to get home as soon as possible withmy bride.‖ He turned to grin at her. Sheblushed and glanced down at her pink dress trimmed in white lace. It was moreexpensive than anything Neil could afford.―Cassie, Neil said, his tone firm. ―Emily

is a person. She deserves to be told you‘re leaving.―Oh, Neil. She sighed and shook her head, her shiny wavesbouncing under her fancy hat. ―I simply don‘t have time. Besides, it would be

awkward and I don‘t wish to put her through that. You can do it for me. Tell her I had to visit a sick relative. She‘ll

believe you.His face grew red, his fistsclenched at his sides. ―You can‘t expect me to lie to her ―Well...no. I suppose you‘re right. Then Iwill send her a letter and explainthings.John cleared his throat and narrowed his eyes at Neil, his 6'3" frameseeming to tower over Neil‘s 5'7" leanbuild. ―This has gone on long enough.Good day, Mr. Craftsman. He tipped hishat and led Cassie to the judge to makethe divorce final. His Redeeming Bride 3She offered him a helpless shrug as sheobediently followed John. More likely, shefollowed his money. Neil shook his head

in disgust and stormed out of thecourthouse, glad to be rid of her once and for all. Since the day he found out that hewasn‘t Emily‘s father, he learned that Cassie bent the truth to suit her interests. Emily. Just the thought of hisdaughter caused his stomach to tie up in

knots. What was he going to tell her?He untied his gelding‘s reins from thepost and jumped on the saddle. As hetrotted out of town, a group of peopleclapped. Turning his attention to the

source of the happy noise, he witnessed anewly married couple departing from achurch. The groom gave his bride a kiss

on the cheek, and she laughed. Then they turned their attention to the people inattendance and shook their hands and exchanged hugs.He scoffed, recalling how hopeful he had been the day he married Cassie. It had been almost eight years ago. He thought he was the luckiest man in the world.Beauty was highly overrated. It blinded aman to the things that mattered.Honesty, generosity, kindness, and love. Those were the traits that made a womantruly beautiful. What a fool I was. Never again. I’ll never fall in love with another pretty face.
