HISTORIC CHURCH BELL TOLLS AGAINOver one hundred years ago the bell in the Lincklaen Com-munity Church tolled each Sunday, beckoning area believers to gather in fellowship. Thankful hearts offered praise for the week's blessings. Troubled hearts prayed for the Lord's guid-ance. Doubt-filled hearts looked for assurance and hope. One hundred years later finds the church building decaying, neglected, the bell long silent. Thankful, troubled or doubting hearts no longer gather beneath its roof to praise, pray or seek. It is a sad analogy of the state of our hearts, indeed of our na-tion in 2010!God is calling us to rebuild the church, thus repairing our de-caying faith and sense of community as well! Through prayer and dedication, the hope is to establish a multi-cultural, multi-generational community of believers. There will be a new name, a new vision, a new approach to worship and giving, and yet a return to the solid faith of our fathers, a faith based on the Bible, His word, His truth. All are welcome to join us as we gather to worship at Celebra-tion Community Church of Lincklaen on Sunday, May 23, 10:30 a.m. May the tolling of the bell usher in a new era of faith for the community.
The Church is located 6 miles from DeRuyter, following Lincklaen St. to Co. Rte. 12 to Lincklaen. Church is on the left, across from the Town Hall. Parking at Town Hall. All are welcome to join us as we celebrate God’s goodness!

THE PIG CITY GARDEN CALENDARBy Daniel Marvin
WEEK of 10-16 may, ‘10
Dining, Entertainment & Lodging
What follows are some helpful gardening hints from From Marie Iannotti of “Your Guide to Gardening.”
It looks like the weather is going to continue being a mixed bag. It sure makes you appreciate the sun, when it comes out. May is a busy time in most gardens, some finally getting started and some transitioning to a second season. Here’s your Regional Gardening Guide for May. Get busy! Gardening Tip of the Week: “On the Spot Composting:” I save coffee grounds, egg shells, and peels to dig in my new beds. The worms love it and it also adds nutrients to the soil. You can also cool off the water from steaming or boiling veggies and use it to water plants. Not much goes to waste in our kitchen, just meat by-
products and fats. Submitted by Judy-- The biggest request an onion will demand of you is the patience to let it finish growing. It’s even courteous enough to poke its head above ground to signal it’s just about time to harvest. Onions are also one of those crops whose fresh picked flavor cannot be found in the produce aisle. Pick a corner of your vegetable garden to devote to growing onions. You could even tuck them into the flower beds. The deer won’t touch them.
=======================================Me - I love shallots as a very special substitute for onions
- not that they could possible get big enough to have a slice cover your cheeseburger!! Don’t need for hot dogs though!
Happy Gardening!

were impressed with this facility and because of it the British Institute of Nursing Sisters was set up.
Prior to the foundation of modern nursing, nuns and the military often provided nursing-like services. The religious and military roots of modern nursing remain in evidence today in many countries, for example in the United Kingdom, senior female nurses are known as ‘‘sisters’’. It was during time of war that a significant development in nursing history arose when English nurse Florence Nightingale, working to improve conditions of soldiers in the Crimean War, laid the foundation stone of professional nursing with the principles summarised in the book Notes on Nursing. Other important nurses in the development of the profession include: Mary Seacole, who also worked as a nurse in the Crimea; Agnes Elizabeth Jones and Linda Richards, who established quality nursing schools in the USA and Japan, and Linda Richards who was officially America’s first trained nurse, graduating in 1873 from the New England Hospital for Women and Children in Boston.
New Zealand was the first country to regulate nurses
nationally, with adoption of the Nurses Registration Act on the 12th of September, 1901. Ellen Dougherty was the first registered nurse. North Carolina was the first state in the United States to pass a nursing licensure law in 1903.
Nurses have experienced difficulty with the hierarchy in medicine that has resulted in an impression that nurses primary purpose is to follow the direction of medics. This tendency is certainly not observed in Nightingale’s Notes on Nursing, where the doctors are mentioned relatively infrequently and often in critical tones, particularly relating to bedside manner.
The modern era has seen the development of nursing degrees and nursing has numerous journals to broaden the knowledge base of the profession. Nurses are often in key management roles within health services and hold research posts at universities.
Nursing As A ProfessionThe authority for the practice of nursing is based upon a social
contract that delineates professional rights and responsibilities as well as mechanisms for public accountability. In almost all countries, nursing practice is defined and governed by law, and entrance to the profession is regulated at national or state level.
The aim of the nursing community worldwide is for its
In Celebration of Nurse’s Week...
We Take Them For Granted Today, But They Weren’t
Always Here To Care For UsNursing today is a healthcare profession focused on the
care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life from birth to death.
Nurses work in a large variety of specialties where they work independently and as part of a team to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care.
History of NursingNursing comes in various forms in every culture, although
the definition of the term and the practice of nursing has being known as a wet nurse and the latter being known as a dry nurse.[1] In the 15th century, this developed into the idea of looking after or advising another, not necessarily meaning a woman looking after a child.Nursing has continued to develop in this latter sense, although the idea of nourishing in the broadest sense refers in modern nursing to promoting quality of life.
Nursing was viewed during the 17th century as a very low job in the social hierarchy. They had a reputation for being drunk and obnoxious, a view amplified by the doctors of the time to make themselves seem more important and able. It was not until Florence Nightingale, a well educated woman from a middle class family, became a nurse and improved it drastically that people began to accept nursing as a respectable profession. Other aspects also helped in the acceptance of nursing. In 1853 Theodore Fliedner set up a hospital where the nurses he employed had to be of good nature. Many people

professionals to ensure quality care for all, while maintaining their credentials, code of ethics, standards, and competencies, and continuing their education.[6] There are a number of educational paths to becoming a professional nurse, which vary greatly worldwide, but all involve extensive study of nursing theory and practice and training in clinical skills.
Nurses care for individuals who are healthy and ill, of all ages and cultural backgrounds, and who have physical, emotional, psychological, intellectual, social, and spiritual needs. The profession combines physical science, social science, nursing theory, and technology in caring for those individuals.
In order to work in the nursing profession, all nurses hold one or more credentials depending on their scope of practice and education. A Licensed practical nurse (LPN) (also referred to as a Licensed vocational nurse, Registered practical nurse, Enrolled nurse, and State enrolled nurse) works independently or with a Registered nurse. The most significant differentiation between an LPN and RN is found in the requirements for entry to practice, which determines entitlement for their scope of practice, for example in Canada an RN requires a bachelors degree and a LPN requires a 2 year diploma. A Registered nurse (RN) provides scientific, psychological, and technological knowledge in the care of patients and families in many health care settings. Registered nurses may also earn additional credentials or degrees enabling them to work under different titles (Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Registered Nurse First Assistant[7], etc).

Nursing Theory and ProcessIn general terms, the nursing process is the method used to
assess and diagnose needs, plan and implement interventions, and evaluate the outcomes of the care provided. Like other disciplines, the profession has developed different theories derived from sometimes diverse philosophical beliefs and paradigms or worldviews to help nurses direct their activities to accomplish specific goals. Currently, two paradigms exist in nursing, the totality paradigm and the simultaneity paradigm.
Nurses practice in a wide range of settings, from hospitals to visiting people in their homes and caring for them in schools to research in pharmaceutical companies. Nurses work in occupational health settings (also called industrial health settings), free-standing clinics and physician offices, nurse-run clinics, long-term care facilities and camps. They
also work on cruise ships and in military service. Nurses act as advisers and consultants to the health care and insurance industries. Some are attorneys and others work with attorneys as legal nurse consultants, reviewing patient records to assure that adequate care was provided and testifying in court. Nurses can work on a temporary basis, which involves doing shifts without a contact in a variety of settings, sometimes known as per diem nursing, agency nursing or travel nursing. Nurses work as researchers in laboratories, universities and research institutions.
Internationally, there is a serious shortage of nurses.[11] One reason for this shortage is due to the work environment in which nurses practice. In a recent review of the empirical human factors and ergonomic literature specific to nursing

Some of the activities planned again for this year include tours of the fish hatchery’s operation and history, as well as a program entitled “Bugs In The Water”, which will be conducted by DEC’s Rogers Environmental Education Center. Two scheduled fishing clinics will again be held at one of the ponds, conducted jointly by DEC staff and TU volunteers, to familiarize school age anglers with techniques, tackle, species of fish, and casting instruction.
While these programs and related exhibits are taking place at the fish hatchery, artisans, crafters, antique dealers and others will be set up in the Town Park. A special exhibit on the former Gladding Fishing Line Co., from the Salmon River International Sport Fishing Museum in Pulaski, NY, is planned, and guest Peter Thompson, author of Freshwater Game Fish of North America: An Illustrated Guide, will be on hand to
sell signed copies of his book. A new stamp cancellation will again be on sale by the U.S. Postal Service, while directly across the street, Gladding Braided Products, Inc. will host a special exhibit, and offer a selection of their manufactured rope products for sale.
In addition to the Fishing Heritage event, the Otselic Valley Grange will again host their annual community garage sale day, involving residents throughout the community. The Grange will also be offering their special beef barbecue luncheon, starting at 11 am at the Grange Hall, just a short walk from the Town Park. Other food sales will be available in the Town Park throughout the day, as well as at The Daily Grind, Donna’s Lunchbox, The Burgh, and the South Otselic Store during their regular business hours.
Prize drawings for sport fishing items will be held at the fishing clinic site for those who participate in that program, as well as a special drawing for new members who join the Otselic Valley Fishing & Heritage Association.
Admission to all activities is free, and parking is available at the hatchery, across from the Town Park, at the Otselic Valley Central School and elsewhere throughout the hamlet. To enhance public convenience, a free day-long bus shuttle will be available this year to transport visitors between the Town Park and the fish hatchery.
The public is welcome to come rain or shine and spend an enjoyable day with family and friends, as the residents of South Otselic welcome you to a glimpse of their historic past, while promoting the sport of recreational fishing.
For more information, see www.ovfish.org.
South Otselic’sAnnual Fishing Heritage Day The Otselic Valley Fishing & Heritage Association
(OVF&HA) is proud to announce that on Saturday, May 15 from 9am to 4pm, the small rural community of South Otselic will host its second annual Fishing Heritage Day. Home to one of New York State’s twelve fish hatcheries, and the former B. F. Gladding Co., the scenic Otselic River flows through this northwestern Chenango County hamlet and its surrounding communities, farms and woodlands. OVF&HA is a newly formed nonprofit organization that stemmed from last year’s planning effort for South Otselic’s first Fishing Heritage Day.
The hamlet has a long history related to the sport of fishing. It has been home to the South Otselic Fish Culture Center for nearly 80 years, where Tiger Muskie and Walleye are raised and then released into New York State rivers and lakes. The former B. F. Gladding Company, established in 1816 just outside the hamlet, employed some 200 people during its heyday, and eventually moved its manufacturing complex into South Otselic, along the river. Over the years, Gladding grew to become the largest, and eventually, the oldest fishing line manufacturer in the world, turning out what many anglers considered to be the highest quality lines available, and earning South Otselic the reputation as “the fishing line capital of the world“.
Building upon last year’s event, United Methodist minister Carl Johnson, who conceived the idea of this event, stated “We’re looking forward to our second Fishing Heritage Day to celebrate South Otselic’s past as home to a major fishing line industry, and as a long time neighbor of the State fish hatchery. Participation and attendance at last year’s event far exceeded our expectations, due in no small part to the local individuals who willingly lent their support. We were also fortunate to receive major assistance from the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the Chenango Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU), and valley-wide businesses and organizations. We are building on last year’s experience to make this event an enjoyable, memorable and educational tradition for all who attend. Of course, we’re blessed to be located in such a beautiful valley whose river literally flows through this hamlet“, added Reverend Johnson.
performance, nurses were found to work in generally poor environmental conditions. DeLucia, Ott, & Palmieri (2009) concluded, “the profession of nursing as a whole is overloaded because there is a nursing shortage. Individual nurses are overloaded. They are overloaded by the number of patients they oversee. They are overloaded by the number of tasks they perform. They work under cognitive overload, engaging in multitasking and encountering frequent interruptions. They work under perceptual overload due to medical devices that do not meet perceptual requirements (Morrow et al., 2005),
insufficient lighting, illegible handwriting, and poor labeling designs. They work under physical overload due to long work hours and patient handling demands which leads to a high incidence of MSDs. In short, the nursing work system often exceeds the limits and capabilities of human performance. HF/E research should be conducted to determine how these overloads can be reduced and how the limits and capabilities of performance can be accommodated. Ironically, the literature
shows that there are studies to determine whether nurses can effectively perform tasks ordinarily performed by physicians. Results indicate that nurses can perform such tasks effectively. Nevertheless, already overloaded nurses should not be given more tasks to perform. When reducing the overload, it should be kept in mind that underloads also can be detrimental to performance (Mackworth, 1948). Considering both overloads and underloads are important to consider for improving performance.” [12]
The practice of nursing is governed by laws that define a scope of practice, generally mandated by the legislature of the country or area within which the nurse practices. Nurses are held legally responsible and accountable for their practice. The standard of care is that of the “prudent nurse.”

Memorial Day Best BBQ Chicken Ever!
By: Bradley B. “This recipe is everything off the shelf, nothing too fancy,
but wonderful and perfect for grilling. Marinate, or add sauce directly to the chicken. Send the kids to do the dishes and enjoy the evening!”
Prep Time: 30 Min, Cook Time: 20 Min. Ready In: 8 Hrs 50 Min
Ingredients1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning1 teaspoon garlic powder2 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar1 1/2 tablespoons ketchup6 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves
Directions1.In a large bowl, blend the Worcestershire sauce, Cajun
seasoning, garlic powder, brown sugar, and ketchup. Place the chicken in the bowl, and coat thoroughly with the sauce mixture. Cover, and refrigerate 8 hours or overnight.
2.Heat an outdoor grill for medium heat, and lightly oil grate.
3.Discard the marinade, and grill chicken 6 to 8 minutes per side on the prepared grill, or until no longer pink and juices run clear.
Thanks Mr B for forwarding this... Courage. You’re a 19 year old kid. You’re critically wounded and dying in the jungle
somewhere in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam . It’s November 11, 1967. LZ (landing zone) X-ray. Your unit is outnumbered 8-1 and the enemy fire is so intense,
from 100 yards away, that your CO (commanding officer) has ordered the MedEvac helicopters to stop coming in.
You’re lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns and you know you’re not getting out.
Your family is half way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you’ll never see them again.
As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day. Then - over the machine gun noise - you faintly hear that
sound of a helicopter.
You look up to see a Huey coming in. But ... It doesn’t seem real because no MedEvac markings are on it.
Captain Ed Freeman is coming in for you. He’s not MedEvac so it’s not his job, but he heard the radio
call and decided he’s flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire anyway.
Even after the MedEvacs were ordered not to come. He’s coming anyway.
And he drops it in and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 3 of you at a time on board.
Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire to the doctors and nurses and safety.
And, he kept coming back!! 13 more times!! Until all the wounded were out. No one knew until the mission was over that the Captain had been hit 4 times in the legs and left arm.
He took 29 of you and your buddies out that day. Some would not have made it without the Captain and his Huey.
Medal of Honor Recipient, Captain Ed Freeman, United States Air Force, died Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at the age of 70, in Boise, Idaho .
May God Bless and Rest His Soul.

Food for Thought Movie At the Cazenovia Public Library During May, the “Food for Thought” film series will be
shown around the Mohawk Valley with each film focusing on good food for a healthy family and a healthier community. “What’s on Your Plate,” one of the films in this series, will be shown on Tuesday, May 18th at 7:00 pm in the Cazenovia Public Library Community Room.
“What’s on Your Plate?” is a witty and provocative documentary about kids and food politics by award-winning director and producer Catherine Gund. Filmed over the course of one year, “What’s on Your Plate?” follows two eleven-year-old multi-racial city kids, Sadie and Safiyah, as they explore their place in the food chain.
The girls address questions regarding the origin of the food they eat, how it’s cultivated, how many miles it travels from the harvest to their plate, how it’s prepared, who prepares it, and what is done afterwards with the packaging and leftovers. They visit supermarkets, fast food chains, and school lunchrooms.
But, they also check into innovative sustainable food system practices by going to farms, greenmarkets, and community supported agriculture (CSA) programs. They visit restaurants supplied with locally grown food, an upstate New York carrot farmer hoping to sell his local harvest to the New York City Department of Education school lunch program, and a local CSA.
When it comes to food production, children and families need much more knowledge to combat the industry’s financial
interest in keeping their practices secret, with no concern for consumers or the planet. At the same time, the U.S. is facing an unprecedented crisis in children’s health and diet-related issues. Childhood obesity has quadrupled in the last 10 years, and Americans born in the year 2000 make up the first generation in history to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.
Join Sadie and Safiyah at 7:00 pm on May 18th to learn what children and adults alike can do to take care of their food, their bodies, and their environment all at the same time.
In addition, take a look at the books relating to nutrition and eating local food that are on display at the library. Included are “Pasture Perfect: The Far-Reaching Benefits of Choosing Meat, Eggs, and Dairy Products from Grass-Fed Animals” by Jo Robinson, “Local Flavors: Cooking and Eating from America’s Farmers’ Markets” by Deborah Madison, the young readers edition of “The Omnivore’s Dilemma: The Secrets Behind What You Eat” by Michael Pollan, and many more.
All events at the Cazenovia Public Library are free and open to the public. For more information, call 655-9322 or visit www.midyork.org/cazenovia.

Blesses are they who know I’m at a loss
To find the strength to carry my cross.
Blessed are they who ease the days
On my journey Home in loving ways.
Sorry If We Woke You...Sorry if we woke you in the middle of the night But someone in your neighborhood is fighting for his
life.Sorry if we block the road and make you turn around,But there’s been a bad wreck with dying children on the
ground. When you see us coming you’ll understandLet us have the right-of-way someone needs a helping
hand.Sometimes a child is choking, sometimes a broken leg.Sometimes a heart stops beating, and when we get there
it’s too late.So if you see us crying when we think we’re aloneYou’ll know we had a “bad” one and we’re feeling mighty
downWe don’t do it for the money -- you know we don’t get
paid.We don’t do it for the glory but for the life that might be
saved.Somewhere deep within us our souls are crying out“We’re here to help our neighbors out in their hour of pain
and doubt.”God gave us something special to help us see you
throughWe do it ‘cause we love you, and we care about you too.

One day while driving home from his fishing trip in the pouring rain, a man got a flat tire outside a monastery
A monk came out and invited him inside to have dinner and spend the night. The motorist accepted. That night he had a wonderful dinner of fish and chips.
He decided to compliment the chef. Entering the kitchen, he asked the cook, “Are you the fish friar?”
“No,” the man replied, “I’m the chip monk.”

“The best six doctors anywhere,And no one can deny it,
Are sunshine, water, rest, and air,Exercise and diet.
These six will gladly you attend,If only you are willing.Your mind they’ll ease.Your will they’ll mend.
And charge you not a shilling.”— Nursery rhyme quoted by Wayne Fields,
What the River Knows, 1990

The Stockbridge Valley Softball Program would like to thank all who supported our endeavor to travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina over Spring Break to participate in the Grand Strand Softball Classic. The support and generosity we witnessed throughout this process is greatly appreciated. We would like to thank the Munnsville Legion for all of their support, the generous donation of their time, facilities and continued support for everything we do. We would like to thank the Ruritans for their generosity and continued support of all things Stockbridge Valley. We would also like to thank the Stockbridge Valley Educational Foundation for their generosity as well as their continued recognition of the importance of education beyond the classroom walls. Another thank you goes out to the Stockbridge Valley sports boosters for their continued generosity towards the program. Last but definitely not least, we would like to send a special thanks out to everyone from the community and beyond who came out and supported us throughout this process. Without your support none of this would be possible.
