Shiroyone senmai-da is a sight to see. From spring to summer, the sunset over the sea beautifully reflects on the water in the rice fields. The name “Amaharashi” or “clearing up after rain” comes from a legend that a group led by Minamoto Yoshitsune, a famous samurai in the 12th century, sheltered from the rain under a big rock now called Yoshitsune-iwa rock. The somon main gate, sanmon temple gate, butsuden Buddhist temple and hatto legal hall are arranged in a straight line, which is a typical Zen Buddhism temple style. Junicho-gata Riverside ParkOver 1200 years ago, in the ancient time of Manyo, then Governor Otomo Yakamochi who is also one of the poets in Manyo-shu poetry book visited here for a pleasure cruise in Fuse Mizu-umi lake which is now Junicho-gata lagoon. 8 Ninjya Hattori-kun TrainCharacters of Ninjya Hattori-kun, a popular manga created by Fujiko Fujio A from Himi are painted on the train. You can hear announcements by Hattori-kun in the train running along Toyama Bay, through the pine tree forest and the urban area, which makes your trip fun. Asahi-yama ParkThis is the best observation spot in Himi: on your left you can see Nada-ura beach and Noto peninsula, and on your right Matsudae-hama beach stretches with white sand and green pines. 11 Ozakai Cave Ruin (Designated as a national historical relic site)

The sea cave is about 16m wide, 8m high and 35m long. It is Japan’s first cave ruin to be searched. Among 6 layers of the cave human bones and earthenware vessels including Yayoi ancient ware were excavated. •16-min. drive (12km) from JR Himi Sta.

Giant Camellia Trees at HimiThe size of over 500-year-old Oidani camellia tree is 3.53m in circumference, the largest in Japan. It is also called “Sashimata no tsubaki” or intergrafted camellia because the trunk is branched at the lower part and then new branches are grafted above with each other. The flower blooms from April to early May. Nagasaka Fudo camellia tree is 11m high and about 400 years old. It is also called “Sando-zaki no tsubaki” or camellia in full bloom three times a year during the flower season from December to April.•Oidani camellia tree: 25-min. drive (16km) from JR Himi Sta.•Nagasaka Fudo camellia tree: 28-min. drive (18km) from JR Himi Sta.

Ginkgo Tree atJonichi-ji Temple

(Designated as a national natural treasure)On the grounds of Jonichi-ji temple of the Shingon sect, the big female ginkgo tree is about 100-year-old with the height of 24m and 12m in circumference. •2-min. drive (1km) from JR Himi Sta.

10 Michi Shrine (Designated as a prefectural historical building)

Michi shrine was moved here from Sekido-zan Tempyo-ji, a temple for mountain asceticism, in accordance with the edicts ordering the Separation of Shinto and Buddhism during Meiji Restoration. The shrine uses highly sophisticated techniques such as kumimono structure and ogi-daruki or rafters arranged in the shape of a fan. •20-min. drive (14.5km) from JR Himi Sta.

18 Yanaida Nuno-o-yamaAncient Tomb

(Designated as a national historical relic site)

Discovered in 1998, the ancient tomb is the largest in the regions along the Sea of Japan. The tomb is said to be built in the first half of 4th century and is extremely large comparing to other ancient tombs around here. Constructed at the foot of a hill which oversees Toyama Bay, the tomb is considered to be of a powerful village head who created wealth by overseas trade. •8-min. drive (5.3km) from JR Himi Sta.

Marumage Chignon Festival Marumage chignion festival is said to have begun when geisha visited Senju-ji temple while specially wearing a marumage hairstyle which is a symbol of a married woman. On the once-a-year holiday to Senju Kannon Bodhisattava at the temple they came to pray for their happy marriage. Today, single women are chosen among the applicants for this event and wear the marumage hairstyle, and pray for their marriage at the festival. •Place: Senju-ji temple

Gong-gong Festival In the early Edo period, Himi area was hit by a big drought. Farmers and the chief priest of Jonichi-ji temple did a ritual for a rain. Their prayer answered, they were so happy about the rain they kept gonging, almost breaking, the big temple bell. This is the origin of the festival. At the temple you need to heave a 50kg log to strike the bell. A bell-gonging contest is held in the festival for brawny people to flex their muscles. •Place: Jonichi-ji temple

Himi Shishi-mai MuseumShishi-mai or traditional lion dance has long been generated and popular in Himi, so the city is called “shishi-mai no sato” or the village of lion dance. In Kaisen-kan, or “Flesh Fish Hall”, shops directly-managed by fisher persons sell fish caught in Himi. Himi-bozu-kun He is a son of Umi-bozu, a monster of the sea, and smiles friendlily with a rod and a yellowtail. He is said to bring you happiness when you stroke his head.

Himino-e Bridge Located in front of Kaisen-kan or flesh fish hall, the cable-stayed bridge is illuminated white in spring and fall, light blue in summer, and light yellow in winter.•3-min. drive (1.6km) from Himi Sta.

Gong-gong Festival About 300 years ago, the plague raged Himi. People enshrined the divided spirit of the Gion god in Yasaka shrine in Kyoto as the god expels epidemics. The disaster was warded off. Ritual Dance with Lion Mask

In Himi as the village of shishi-mai traditional lion dance, the dances have been generated at as many as 120 spots, the unparalleled number in the country. The magnificent taiko-dai or drum stands and “hundred-foot” lion dance performed by 5 or 6 dancers are unique. At shishi-mai festivals in spring and fall, the dances continue until dawn to entertain the audiences.

Himi Hot Spring AreaOnsen or hot springs are scattered across the city, mainly at the northern part of the coastal area. The twenty or more ryokan and minshuku or Japanese-style hotels and inns with a hot spring bath can accommodate about 1700 people in total. The therapeutic benefits include the relief of cuts, burns, chronic skin ailments, and chronic woman’s ailments. Containing natrium which is beneficial for our skin, the hot springs especially attract women, known as “The hot spring waters with beautifying powers”.
