Let’s get basic. You won’t quite be a connoisseur of craft beer by the end of the crawl, but at least you’ll

have a base to work with. Take these fundamentals with you and store them in your

vernacular – who knows, you might even impress a future date with this knowledge.

IPAs

Brimming with tropical, citrus,

piney aromas and resinous

bitterness, India pale ales are

synonymous with San Diego’s

bold, enlivened brewing scene.

Session Beers

This term refers to loweralcohol

beers; bitters, brown

ales, pale ales, “session

IPAs”—imbibers can enjoy

several of in a single sitting.

Belgian Ales

SoCal takes on Belgian

classics range from funky

farmhouse ales and fruity

tripels to caramely dubbels

and robust, diversely flavored

strong ales.

Lagers

From straw-hued pilsners and

bocks to medium-bodied

dunkels and doppelbocks to

dark Baltic porters, the lager

spectrum is flavorful & varied.

Quoted from San Diego Brewers Guild Map and Guide – SanDiegoBrewersGuild.orgWords by Brandon Hernández, who is an author and journalist focused on craft beer in San Diego and beyond. Stouts

The most obsidian limb of

beer’s family tree oers

light-drinking porters, dry

Irish stouts, creamy oatmeal

stouts and rich, chocolaty

imperial stouts.

Wheat Beers

Wheat brings a smooth

mouth-feel and hazy

appearance to coriander and

orange-infused wits, and

hefeweizens rife with nuances

of banana and clove.

We are delighted you decided to join us for the first annual crawl! HBC could not be

more excited to host and partner with such extraordinary breweries and restaurants in

our own neighborhood. Please take the time to meet the brewery representatives and

ask them any questions you might have about the booming craft beer community in

San Diego. Likewise, indulge in some of the finest restaurants and clubs that Hillcrest

has to offer.

We’ve partnered with local tech company Webble to provide help in guiding you

through the crawl. Feel free to download their rad, free app and look for the HCBC

logo next to participating businesses. We’ve also mapped out an HCBC Google map

to help you find your way. Each participating business will have a yellow beer mug on

the sidewalk outside of their establishment to help identify their location.

If you need any help or assistance you can always catch the trolley and come back to

the start at Hillcrest Brewing Company. Happy crawling!

Exotic sausages, a variety of house-made bacon and unexpected game meats will inspire a sense of adventure and push you to the edge of your comfort zone. Come pull up a bar stool at the Swine Bar and enjoy a full bar featuring 12 taps of unique, hard to find craft brews and our “savory, salty, smoky, spicy” specialty cocktail menu.

We focus (non-monogamously) on aroma-driven, complex, flavorful, sessionish beers. We often brew hybrid styles, combining the features we like from established categories to create new, Island-Of-Doctor-Moreau-style mash-ups.

We want our beer to taste good, but we also want it to taste good with food, we want it to be interesting, and we want it to be unlike anything else you drink. We know there is a time and a place for the big, hoppy guys…we like those too. We drink those too. No need for us to try to re-invent that wheel, it’s working pretty well already.

Heat Bar & Kitchen is a unique and innovative dining destination serving locally sourced cuisine and micro-brews coupled with a diverse wine list hand selected from Old World and New World varietals and blends. We invite you to create a memorable dining experience with friends and family in a casually sophisticated ambiance infused with warmth and elegance.

Salt & Cleaver presents a new dining concept based on the ancient art of sausage making. Quality products and techniques also overflow into our collection of craft beers and traditional cocktail selections. Inspired by 1860’s industrial Chicago, S&C’s design elements reflect period furnishings and décor meshed with modern touches.

Rey Knight, owner of Butcher’s Brewing started his career at the Culinary Institute of America in New York. After 10 years on his culinary journey he started Knight Salumi Company. Butcher’s Brewing was born out of a love for good beer and good meat; a natural progression and exploration in fermentation. An avid home brewer, Rey held many experiments with beer yeasts and bacteria in salami and meat curing, and now he’s unleashing his passion for brewing onto the Southern California craft beer scene.

Located in the heart of Hillcrest, 100 WINES is designed by famed restaurant designer, Philippe Beltran and features casual, Old World charm perfect for sharing a table with family and friends. The MED menu at 100 Wines, created by award-winning Chef Katherine Humphus, is influenced by Katherine’s travels through Italy, Spain, France and Greece.

Beer Sampled: My Rating:

Twisted Manzanita Ales was built on the idea that great beer is crafted with both passion and creativity. We recognize that craft brewing is an art that requires tremendous attention to detail and extensive involvement from our brewers in every aspect of the process. In response to that need, we have created a space for our brewers to think outside the box and use new and interesting ingredients sourced both locally and internationally.
