HILL KIDS We were Hil Kids.

W& grew up in a small eotnmun1ty on the south hill o f Delphi, Indiana. We fOde our bikes everywhere. heading home only when it got dark or Ginny Emerson rang the dinner bell. We played Kick the can o.nd Jnil Break, and we made pape< cone May baskets to hang on the front doors of the ladies in the neighborhOod. we roared up and dOwn the alleys, which were our O\\fn super highways.

We helped our folks rake leaves in the falJ, and then we destroyed the pik!s by jwnping in them, shout111g with glee. And In the evening, our dads and moms watched as the leaves burned In the stroot, delighting us by bringing out l'lot dogs and marshmaHO\vs to roast in the etnbers. we roller skated up and down the side\valk in front of Hillcrest School, and our dads pulled us on our sleds down the middle of the streets on snowy days.

We donned our costumes - usually homem3de - at Halloween. knocking on the doors of every house aoo shOubng, 'trick or ueat! ' And maybe some of us (but 1'11 l'Wlvef tell wtio!) soaped windows and threw oom on the sidewalks as Halloween pranks. We rode around the Hill in our parents' cars, ooo-lflg and ah· Ing at lhe Christmas l ights lhat 000<ned just about fYtlef'y house.

tn the summer, we caught fireflies and put them in okt 7-Up bottles; and we couldn't wait for the aMual Hill picnic feast and fun In July. We wDJked to and from school; and we played o utdOOl'S yeBI around, making the mosl of the nooks and crannies and secret pathways all over the Hill.

we splashed in puddles when ii fained, and we played in the OOO"lfields that abutted Vine Street and Riley Road. We skipped rocks. caught crawdads. and swam in Deer Cleek in the summer and skated oo and sled down Its banks in the vllntet.

Every adult on the Hill knew us. and we knew that any aduft on the Hill could (and would) call Mom and Dad tf we misbehaved. We stoOd on the viaduct counting cars. and we ogled the horses when Skip McMurray and his buddies rode through our streets.

we mowed lawns and took out trash to earn our allowances; and we spent our precious pentiies at Oii.e's Hilltop Grocery, buying penny candy, Cokes from the tee box. and yummy orange Sherbet "Push Ups.· We swam in Revingtoo's pool, Jumped on the trampolu'le and played in the tree house at Walkers, and shot baskets behind Chilly Wood's.

Though we grew up and moved away, new generations of Hill K'tds emerged. doing the same thlngs we had done.

This book documents some o f the kids who spent at least part of their growing-up years oo Oelptu's South Hill. Though many of l1S dOn't know one aoother, we are all memberS ot the same tribe. And though our mem0<ies were etched at diffetent times, they are remar1<.ably similar.

The Hin was - Md is - a great place to grow up.

This book is part of an Indiana Bioentenni.al Legacy Project
