TASTEThe setting for this story is a dinner party at the home of stock broker Mike Schofield. The guestsinclude Schofield and his wife and daughter, the narrator and his wife, and a man called Richard Pratt.Pratt is a famous gourmet and enjoys showing off his knowledge of fine wine and food. He is also athoroughly unpleasant man. Both times prior that Pratt dined with Schofield, the two men made acurious bet: Schofield bet that Pratt could not identify some special wine that he had procured for the
night. Pratt had always won. On the night this story takes place, Schofield thinks that he will finally winone over on the gourmet. He has a very rare bottle of claret from a tiny chateau in France, and heboasts that Pratt will never be able to guess it. Pratt, who had been spending the night engrossed inconversation with Schofield's daughter Louise, takes the bet and asks to up the stakes. He offers to bettwo of his houses against the hand of Louise in marriage. Both Louise and her mother are against it, butSchofield manages to convince them to accept. He believes that Pratt has no chance of winning. Prattthen proceeds to smell and taste the wine, and he slowly begins to narrow down its possible origin.Eventually he gets the correct answer and Schofield sits there horrified. Just as Pratt is starting to getnasty about the bet, the house maid appears at his arm and offers him his spectacles, which he hadmisplaced earlier. He takes no notice of her, but she stands her ground and reminds him (rather loudly)that he left them in Mr. Schofield's study on top of the filing cabinet when he went in there that evening...which is just where Pratt, on a previous visit, had advised Schofield to leave his wines to "breathe". Inother words, he cheated!
MARIONETTESThe two main characters and the setting are introduced in a brief exposition. Smith and Braling, bothmen of middle age, find themselves trapped in their marriages. Braling, married to a nervous andauthoritarian wife, and Smith, married to a wife who is madly in love and constantly demands hispresence, both long for personal freedom and project these desires into going to Ri de Janeiro. However, both characters are afraid of changes and the responsibilities of their selfish doing and thusendure their situation. The following part of the story offers a solution: The concept of Marionettes is introduced. These exactduplicates are offered by the company Marionettes, Inc. and, following the motto "No Strings Attached",serve as a replacement for the customer. Braling reveals that he has been using a marionette to fulfillboth his obligations as a husband and his personal interests. With his wife completely unaware, heeventually plans to visit Rio while his android marionette is replacing him at home. Braling presents his
duplicate who behaves surprisingly human. When the duplicate expresses emotions towards Braling's wife ("I've grown rather fond of her."), anupcoming conflict is anticipated. But Smith, fascinated by this solution, decides to buy his ownmarionette to escape his domestic prison. The action rises and the reader's anticipation is affirmed in a turning point when Smith finds out that hehimself has been tricked by a marionette wife. The action moves back to Braling who is standing in frontof the apartment with his duplicate.Braling, presently not needing a replacement, orders his marionette to hide in the basement. However, the conflict evolves further as his duplicate disobeys his order and suggests that he has equal emotionsand even admits that he is in love with Braling's wife. Braling, treating him as a tool and suspecting afurther escalation, tries to escape and call Marionettes, Inc. for support, but fails as his duplicate seizeshim. The verbal conflict now culminates in a physical conflict and the story reaches its climax. Theandroid reveals his plans of travelling to Rio with Braling's wife and then says goodbye to his owner.
The story proceeds in the bedroom where Braling kisses Mrs. Braling. However, it is uncertain whether itis the real Braling or the duplicate as Bradbury deliberately uses "someone" instead of a definitepronoun; but Mrs. Braling's surprised reaction could suggest either the defeat of Braling or his newfoundappreciation for his wife. The dénouement only resolves the direct conflict between Braling and his duplicate; however, Smith'sconflict remains unsolved and it is unclear, if the androids replace the human existence.

SHOULD WIZARD HIT MOMMY?This story deals with a child's view of the world and the difficult moral questions she raises
during the story session with her father.
Jack (Joanne's father) had become accustomed to or putting it more precisely obligated to
telling stories out of his head to his daughter Joanne during the evenings and Saturdayafternoons. This tradition itself was now two years old and Joanne had been two when it
started. These stories were almost the same except for some slight variations. It started with a
creature usually named Roger (Roger fish, Roger squirrel, Roger chipmunk), who had some
problem and went with it to the wise owl. The owl directed him to go the the magician, who
would solve his problem in exchange for a few pennies more than the creature had and in the
same breath would direct the creature to go to a place where he could find it. Then, the roger
creature would be so happy and would return home just in time to hear the train whistle that
brought his daddy home from Boston.
On this particular day, a Saturday, it was time for Joanne's nap. So Jack had to tell her a story.
So he began his story and asked Joanne what the creature should be named. It seemed they had
studied about a new animal at school today for she enthusiastically said "skunk, Roger skunk".The character was set and so began the story. Jack was now ready to start the story and was
filled with creative enthusiasm. The story started with the creature being unable to play and
make friends with other creatures because he smelled awful. The creature having no other
option went to seek the advice of the wise old owl who directed him to go the magician. Roger
skunk found his way to the magicians house and sought his help. The magician with his magic
wand turned the awful smell that roger had into a smell that was of roses. The roger creature
then as directed gave the magician the pennies he had and as per the instruction of the magician
went to the well to get the extra pennies.
Then roger skunk went back home. As he reached home his mother was disappointed with
roger skunk as she thought that it was not right to change one's identity to please their friends.
She said real friends are the ones who accept you for who you are and not for who you want to become. She then took roger back to the magician and hit the magician with the umbrella she
had been carrying. The magician then performed his magic and roger no longer smelled of
roses. After that they returned home just in time to hear the whistle of the train blow that
brought Roger skunk's father home and from that day on, Roger skunk was content in being
himself.
Throughout this story Jack wanted to teach his daughter Joanne about moral values, but his
daughter Joanne (Jo), who was just a child, reacted differently to the story's ending. She want
the wizard to hit Roger's mother and let Roger smell of roses and not change him. This was a
child's perspective of things. To a child, friends mean everything and they do not understand
moral values and the importance of parents.
Jack had faced similar problems like roger had faced so he was trying to tell Jo that whatever
parents say or do for them are in their best interest. But Jo was adamant and wanted another
ending for the story.
After the story ended jack went down to help his wife Clare paint the furniture. When he
reached downstairs he saw that the woodwork, a cage of moldings and rails and baseboards all
around them ,was half old tan and half new ivory and he felt caught in an ugly middle position,
and though he as well felt his wife's presence in the cage with him, he did not want to speak
with her, work with her, touch her, anything
NOTE: Jack had a son named Bobby two years old, Clare was three months pregnant.

MR. KNOW- ALL The story takes place just after the war on a liner that is on it's way fromSanfrancisko to Yokohama. From the very first lines of the story we can see thatthe narrator doesn't like the main hero of the story - Max Kelada that can beproved by the following quotation: When I was told the name of my companion myheart sank. It suggested closed portholes and the night air rigidly excluded. Wecan see that the narrator of the story likes Englishmen very much and that's wayhe says that he wouldn't be so unhappy about his fellow mate if his name would be

Smith or Brawn. By this we can understand that Maugham is a patriot - he likesonly his countrymen. But the narrator makes a mistake thinking that Max Kelada isnot an Englishman - indeed he is. As we get to know Mr. Max Kelada we find outthat he is boastful because as soon as he met the storyteller and gave him a drinkhe told him that he can get everything. Max Kelada said : If you have any friendson board, you tell them you've got a pal who's got all the liquier in the world. MaxKelad is also very talkative and familiar that can be proved by the fact that hedidn't say Mr. before the narrator's name. But Mr. Max Kelada didn't do it becausehe was impolite, but because he wanted the storyteller to fell comfortably. Aquestion has probably come up to you why does the name of the story is Mr.Know-all?. This nick name contrived the men which were on the liner. It is becauseMr. Max Kelada knew everything. He knew how to do tricks with cards, when thestoryteller wanted to go downstairs, he said that everything was ready. Thequotation says : he conducted the auctions, collected money for prizes at thesports, and arranged the funny dress ball. He was everywhere and always. Fromthis we may think that he was an energetic man, but it never came up to Mr.Kelad's mind that he disturbed anybody. He was convinced that everybody is
happy to meet him. From this we can come to a conclusion that Mr. Kelada was invery high thoughts about himself. The quotation says : You might have kicked himdownstairs and slammed the door in his face without the suspicion dawning on himthat he was not a welcome visitor. But even then he couldn't understand that youdidn't want to see him. As the story goes on, the author introduces us with anothercharacters - Mr. Ramsay and his wife. Between Mr. Rampsay and Mr. Kelada formsup an external conflict because Mr. Kelada considers the pearls around Mr.Ramsay's wife's neck real, but Mr. Ramsay artificial and they decide to bet. Nextfollows a story element - complication because as sonn as Mr. Know-all looks at theneckles he sees that it is real , but as soon as he looks at Mrs. Ramsay he says theopposite. And in such a way the author hooks our curosity because we want to findout why did Mr. Kelada does so. He was about to speak. Suddenly he caught sight
of Mrs. Ramsay's face. It was so white that she looked as though she were about tofaint. She was staring at him with wide and terrified eyes. Mr. Kelada was makingover himself. So far Mr. Know-all had shown himself as a bad character but in theend we see that he has changed because he escaped Mrs. Ramsay by saying thatthe pearls were artificial. The thing that would have happened if Mr. Kelada hadn'thelped Mrs. Ramsay is explained in the following sentence said by Mr. Know-All : If I had a pretty wife I shouldn't let her spend a year in NY! From this sentence wecan see that Mr. Kelada was a real Mr. Known-All, because he knew how to act insituations like that. The main idea - you can't get to know a person in a short timeperiod, not from the first impression, you need a longer period of time.
