Office relocation is always a fantastic opportunity for companies to introduce new ways of working and building a workplace culture to improve internal communication and collaboration. This Q3, do expect loads of excitement coming your way as the firm relocates to 80 Robinson Road with a brand new look.

Working in a collaborative environment not only means getting work done efficiently and constructively but also creating a friendlier surrounding that promotes cross-team bonding than working in silo. Wonders are often accomplished when you are part of a team.

Here are some simple ways to build a successful collaborative work environment by injecting these in your day to day work.

• Work as a team - walk over to colleagues or teammates as it is an open concept and with Micollab, you can ping team members to find their locations, alternatively, arrange to catch up over a cup of coffee or in any one of the meeting places around the office. This will allow teams to communicate the goals, monitor the outcomes, and celebrate the progress.• Encourage innovation – go over to the innovation lab and try to brainstorm, send the discussion to each other so that there is a record to follow up, instil a 'ca-do' attitude to brainstorm new ideas to overcome challenges and obstacles.• Socialise after work – Effective way to open channels of communication over a game of table soccer, darts or karaoke, or simply chat at the bistro. • Recognise, reward and celebrate – Give a pat on each other’s shoulder for a job well done, regardless the size of it.

While the building blocks are progressing as scheduled, let’s take stock on other firm events in Q2 that kept the rest of us busy.

TRI Conference and Dinner24 June 2019Balmoral Hall, Royal Plaza on ScottsRed House Seafood, Clarke Quay

Despite that the welcome reception ended later than expected, the late night and jet lags seemingly did not impact much on these well-travelled delegates who turned up bright and early at 8.30am on conference day. The conference was opened by Henry Tan, Group CEO and Chief Innovation Officer, and Chairman of the International Nexia TRI Business Group, Greg Palfrey. We also had the honour of Gregory Vijayendran, President of the Law Society of Singapore to deliver keynote address on restructuring and insolvency regime in Singapore. Not forgetting the insightful presentations by our local and foreign speakers, in the area of their expertise, contributed largely to the success of this conference.

The conference delegates were also treated to a feast of local seafood specialities and the famous chilli crabs at Red House Seafood. The dinner ended on a ‘surprising’ high note as we celebrated the birthday of Henry with loud cheers and yum-sengs!

NExia ts prepares move to modern, collaborative workspaces"Nothing stands still. Everything is moving in some direction or another." - Norman Davies

The firm has been actively and fervently involving itself in exciting the staff to look forward to the big move. With the mindset of creating an innovative and collaborative workspace, our Operations team has looked into increasing the office benefits for the staff so that everyone can work in such an innovative and collaborative place.

Renovation works began as early as April, and bit by bit, our new ‘home’ is now taking shape. Be thrilled as we take you through this future-ready workspaces that aim to inject innovation, collaboration and fun. as its core.

Let’s check out the progression of the renovation works and some new things to expect:In order to assist the staff with storage space, the Management has given each staff member a personal locker space of 50cm (L) x 40cm (W) x 50cm (H) to keep their items, and of course, ample walking space for movements along the lockers.

All work no play makes Jack/Jane a dull person. Try out these fun entertainment sets as the new working culture encourages interactions in the name of fun.

Upon entering the new office space, prepared to be greeted by the large Bistro space. Visual yourself enjoying a cup of aromatic coffee as you discuss work matters at the office Bistro.

Foosball fans get ready to rumble at the new foosball table that we will be having at our new office! Waiting for a meeting space? No worries, take some time off for a game while waiting!

Missing your targets? Head over to the Darts Machine for some target practice!

Voice of China? How about Voice of Nexia instead? Go for a song or two to let out that pent up "frustration"!

Building up the excitement for ‘island’ workspaces

Opposite the Bistro area, 3 meeting rooms are building up to allow a more conducive environment for private discussion or meeting.

Pay is a sensitive issue. Whilst we know that the market determines pay, it is sometimes difficult if an incumbent or owner CEO is in position. In these situations, I believe that a CEO should have a self-review conscience. If we have too wide a CEO/worker ratio, there is certainly cause for concern.

Typically in a listed company and in larger companies, HR compensation professionals will be engaged to study the CEO pay packages against market to determine if it's at the P50, P75 or P100 level. This is in terms of benchmarking against the market. Another key factor is to ensure CEO pay has a significant linked-to-performance formula, which must be independently ascertained and tested for reasonableness. If the CEO is a shareholder, his interests should be aligned to shareholders by ensuring that the main reward still comes from dividends rather than remuneration.

As part of my role, I have the opportunity to welcome foreign guests to our country and often I ask them what is it that attracts them to Singapore. They mention mainly that they find Singapore a very comfortable place to visit. It's a city and yet there are different kinds of things that make for a good 3-4 days travel destination. Also I know they will not just visit Singapore but also at least one of our neighbouring countries. To keep the tourists coming, I would say we don't really need to add new attractions but we need to ensure that our attractions are refreshed. They should not be left to deteriorate or become dated. A negative example I can give is Haw Par Villa and certain parts of Sentosa. We should refresh our attractions by adding technologically enhanced "experience centres". These give visitors an experience in a comfortable setting before embarking on the tour. These centres should be VR- and AR-enabled. Singapore has very interesting cultural diversity - China town, Little India, Geylang Serai and also Peranakan enclaves. We should do experience centres in all these locations to enhance the tourist experience. Beside refreshing and enhancing our attractions, we need to continue to work with tour agencies, hotels and retail outlets to provide connections and packages that offer quick visits to the neighbouring countries, with good connections from Singapore. These initiatives will continue to keep Singapore relevant and attractive to visitors.

22 Apr - Keeping the attraction alive: What's needed for Singapore to keep the tourists coming - and spending?

1 Apr - CEO pay: both an art and a science? Are Singapore CEOs overpaid? How should they be paid, and what would be a fair, equitable CEO-to-worker pay ratio?

Technology would be key to achieving this "30 by 30" target. In land-scare Singapore, traditional farming is not possible and yet we need to slowly increase our self-sufficiency over time.

With new technologies, high-yield crops and other forms of farming in many countries, we should learn and adopt best practices from these countries. Urban farming - which has been done well in the US and Japan - is another area to explore. Incentives can be provided to building owners who do vertical farming as one feature of their buildings. Little steps by building owners and home owners are all needed to achieve the target.

15 Apr - Urban farming: a viable option. What would be key to Singapore achieving its "30 by 30" local food production target? How do you see the prospects of agri-tech as a new growth sector for the economy?

Indonesia is a resilient country with great diversity. Its businessmen are entrepreneurial and always not contented with just doing business in Indonesia alone but rather using the country as a base to go out to the region. I have worked with a number of Indonesian businessmen who know that raising funds in capital markets in the region helps their international expansion. Elections may affect sentiment in the short term but, in the long run, it is the resilience of Indonesian businessmen and citizens that determines the health of the country's economy.

This debate on whether a big domineering organisation should be split up is not new. Many jurisdictions are currently also considering the case for the Big Four accounting firms. However, in the interest of the free economy, business giants should not be split up. There are existing anti-competition provisions in many jurisdictions and these should cover the concerns. Over-regulation will result in entities seeking to circumvent rules by trying to do different ownership structures.

20 May - Regulate and stem the crisis of confidence: Should Facebook (and other Big Tech giants) be split up? How (if at all) should they be regulated?

29 Apr - A vote for pro-business continuity: How do you see the outcome of Indonesia's 2019 presidential election affecting doing business in the country?

We know that the two superpowers have to be engaged in some muscle-flexing exercises to bring concessions. We have always been globally diversified across the US, Europe and Asia without specific focus on any particular market.

A number of our clients have shifted production from China to other Asian markets like Malaysia and Taiwan to shield themselves from tariffs as a result of the trade war.

27 May - Amid the China-US crossfire: How is your organisation girding itself for any fallout from the ongoing US-China dispute?

Culture needs to be observed. Whether we like it or not, the group CEO plays a key role in this. If we do not exhibit the culture and values in our own behaviour and focus, this cannot be cascaded to the board, the senior management and finally the staff. I am not saying purge all suggestions to drum in culture and values; that would not work. What I am driving at is that it is by ''being'' that is key!

In Singapore the pace and demand of work is huge. Most of us expect our tasks to be done instantaneously or urgently. This creates an environment that is rather toxic. For me, having a good sense of when is time for work and when is time for rest or other pursuits and interests is crucial.

I have been able to know the mission of my life purpose and this helps me to have a clear compass of what I do and how much I do in each area. Having adequate support and knowing how to delegate helps me from burnout. I also try to sweat over the majors but not worry too much on the minors.

Keeping a exercise regime like walking and hiking helps me to take my mind off work.

We look at what employees want. We did a survey and had a long wish list, and then we focused on the key ones and rolled them out. Let me list some areas: Flexibility of work schedules; no fixed dress code, or a “dress appropriately” code; mobility of workplace; a workplace that has fun element and where staff are able to make friends. There are also requests for better medical benefits and ease of submission of claims etc. We have considered all these in our new office and will be working out more.

17 Jun - Burn not out: How do you, as a business leader, cope with or, better yet, pervent burnout at work?

25 Jun - Substance over style: What benefits and perks are truly valued by your employees? Are these measures effective in acheiving their aims, namely attracting and retaining staff, and improving motivation and productivity?

10 Jun - It starts from the top: As a business leader, how do you "get the organisation's culture right" - and ensure the values preached are practised on the gorund?
