Welcome to this last edition of The Courageous Hound for the 2017-18 Academic Year.
This year has been full of events, trips, awards, results, successes and most importantly achievement. On behalf
of all the staff I want to congratulate you all on what the pupils have achieved this year. Through continued
determination, boldness and courage we really are so impressed with every year group and what has been
accomplished. I also want to thank all of the staff, who work tirelessly to provide such a rich agenda for the pu-
pils and who each day put in 100% effort to ensure that each and every pupil has a rewarding and successful
journey through education at Bolingbroke Academy.
In the last fortnight we have celebrated the graduations of Years 7-10, it is, for me personally, so rewarding to
watch each child graduate through each year, from the tie ceremony on day one with us, through to the Sixth
Form. This year, with immense pride, we have seen our first Year 12 cohort flourish and grow in the last
stage of their journey with us and we look forward and ahead to them starting Year 13 in September.
A huge congratulations to pupils, staff, parents and carers who made our Sports Day so successful, it was a
brilliant day with some brilliant individual and team results - we now eagerly await the house points results on
Speech Day! Also a huge congratulations to all those who took part in and supported the Year 7 concert -
a true testament to the incredible talent of our musicians and such a beautiful setting - everyone was in awe.
It is sadly time for us to say farewell to a few members of staff who have chosen to start a new journey. With
best wishes and thanks we bid farewell to the following members of staff who are leaving to pursue a new path;
Mr Tshala who is going to a corporate computing programming role, Ms Tuckett who is fulfilling her dream to
be a Psychologist, Ms Oliver who is going into Project Management and Ms Wilson who is leaving to join
the Army. We also say farewell and wish all the very best to those who are leaving London; Ms Wadham who is
moving to South Africa, Ms Coyte who is moving to Newcastle, Mr Macleod who is returning to Scotland, Ms
Joseph who is returning to France, Mr Batchelor who leaves to teach internationally, Ms Wheeler who is moving
to Egypt to teach internationally and Mr Rowe who is returning to New Zealand to coach professional cricket.
We look forward to commencing our seventh year of Bolingbroke Academy and welcoming faces new and fa-
miliar. Until then I wish you all a very happy, healthy and relaxing summer break.

Con-graduations to the classes
of 2023 and 2024!
Wednesday 11th July saw Bolingbroke's first ever graduation ceremony for Year 7 and 8 pupils. The afternoon
was filled with pupils and parents recognising their successes outside of the classroom across the academic
year. Pupils were awarded a Pass, 2:1 or 1st Class graduation based
upon a number of achievements including learning an instrument,
taking part in a sports team and starring in plays.
The audience were treated to beautiful performances from Zoe
Grimsey (Year 8) on the clarinet, Mariam Akunjee (Year 7) on the
violin, Eliza Michel-Finch (Year 7) on the flute and Macy Philips (year
7) on the flute. These performances were the perfect opportunity for
the pupils to exhibit everything that they have learned this year in
Music lessons and show off their skills in front of very proud family
and friends.
In addition to musical performances there were wonderful speeches
from pupils about their memories of the year: Dani Hughes and
Evelyn Sai in Year 8 and Chloe Burrows and Regan Tahi in Year 7.
These speeches were not only engaging and entertaining, but clearly
showed what a journey the pupils have been on this year, with so
many memories to cherish.
Following the performances the pupils were invited on stage to
rapturous applause as they collected their certificates and officially
graduated as pupils of 2023 and 2024.

YEAR 9 AND 10 GRADUATION
We were delighted to see so many
pupils and parents in attendance at
the KS4 Graduation events at the
end of this term. Our aim was to
mark all of the non-academic
achievements by our pupils to bal-
ance the academic awards given out
at Speech Day in September.
It was a huge task tallying pupils' con-
tributions to sports, drama, music,
DofE or volunteering, their attend-
ance, their effort score and
house points but it resulted in a
wonderfully positive celebration of pupil success.

It was also fantastic to have the Full and Half Colours awarded for excellence in sport by Ms
Bridges as well as our prestigious Greyhound badges for pupils meeting or exceeding their tar-
get grades in many subject areas. Other highlights included our amazing pupil speakers and per-
formers. It really set the tone for excellence amongst our cohorts.
It was incredible to see pupil's support of one another and we left feeling confident that they will
be assets to the Academy in Years 10 and 11. We wish them every success for next year and
look forward to celebrating further at Speech Day.

Sports Day 2018 was a huge success and saw hundreds of Bolingbroke students coming together to compete
in various athletics events, fun events and even fundraise for the Academy! Student competed in the classic
athletics such as the track events as well as discus, shot put, javelin and long jump and the winners of these
events are detailed in the tables on the next page; congratulations to all!
Students also participated in a variety of other fun activities including; wellie boot throw, three
legged race, egg and spoon race and human knot, a massive thank you to our SEND team for running these
alternative fun events! A huge thank you also goes to our incredible Parents Association who put on a variety
of fund raising stalls for the students. The stalls included; henna tattoo, face painting, drinks and cakes, sweets,
Oddono’s Gelati as well as a smoothie bike whereby students had to pedal in order to liquidise the fruit for
their smoothies! The total raised on the day was just under £700.00! Miss Bridges would like to thank all of the
staff and parents involved in making the day one of the best Bolingbroke Sports Days ever!

On Thursday 19th July, 30 Bolingbroke Academy pupils from Year 10 took the 9.30 train from Clapham Junction for
a fun day out in Brighton! We were all very excited, chatting and catching up with our friends, and I am pleased to
report we arrived safely with no recorded incidents!
On arrival at the seaside (an hour later) we split up into groups. My group went vintage clothes and jewellery shop-
ping in the Lanes with a few purchases on the way. Another group went straight to the pier to play on the machines
in the arcade and ate fish and chips! At some point in the day, each group took time to sit on the pebble beach and
enjoy the sun and calm of the sea. Later on, we all met and Miss Davidson who very kindly bought us all an ice-cream
or donut before we headed back to the station for the return journey home. A great day was had by all and we

Young musicians from Ark schools across England
banded together for the first ever Summer Sounds
Music Festival, celebrating music-making across the
network. The event took place at Ark Swift Primary
Academy, on the soon to be developed EdCity site in
West London, on Saturday 23 June 2018.
More than 650 pupils from 26 Ark
schools – ranging in age from year 2
to year 13 – took part in the festi-
val. The event brought together
local community members and fami-
lies in a unique one-day musical cel-
ebration showcasing the talents of
pupils across Ark Schools.
Music is an important part of the
core offer at Ark schools
and Summer
Sounds featured a wide range of per-
formances, workshops and master-
classes for students and audiences
alike. Attendees had the chance to
sing, play and dance along to music
from all around the world, and em-
brace creativity in all its forms.
Students collaborated with a team
of top musicians from around the
country and from all corners of the
music industry, encompassing inter-
national world music superstars, West End hit show performers, top choral conductors, singer-songwriters and
gospel musicians, as well as the Ark alumni community.
Music from all aspects of the curriculum has
been curated and the program included a
choir of 250 students, a Stomp percussion
workshop, African percussion and
dance, ukulele, hootenannies and a full orches-
tra of over 60 musicians from our primary
schools. The day ended with a celebratory
final outdoor carnival parade of 130 drum-
mers, brass and woodwind players led by a
performance group and festival partner,
Kinetika Bloco, inviting all audience members
to take part.

Thursday 12th July, St Barnabas Church, Battersea
Oh what a night! This year, again, we hosted a jam
packed event to showcase our incredible musical talent.
Following hours of practice, the pupils delivered a
sensational concert, hugely enjoyed by all.
Over 75 pupils from Bolingbroke took part, and the
team of musicians left the audience in no doubt that we
have some of the most talented individuals.
St Barnabas Church provided a beautiful setting and in
spite of the warm climes that we are experiencing,
everyone enjoyed the performance hugely; pupils, staff
and parents like.
The Jazz & Funk Band and Senior Band
wowed the audience, and really did lift
the roof off! It was so great to see and
hear so many of the audience tapping and
humming along to the tunes that our
pupils have lived and breathed in
rehearsals for so long.
We are so immensely proud of our
musicians, and so grateful to all those who
attended and, from feedback, so enjoyed
participating in the evening.
Anita Grant, Hannah O Sullivan’s mum, said “It was
wonderful to see so much diversity among the
pupils’ performances and also the increase in
numbers involved. You have a wonderful program that
seems to be bringing out the best in all the students.”
We raised over £500 which will go towards Music de-
partment resources and St Barnabas Church.

NEWS FROM OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY
As part of our Duke of Edinburgh bronze award,
we had to take part in an expedition. We split into
small teams to combat the miles ahead. Equipped with sun cream and lots of snacks we set off on Fri-
day morning. It was a lovely day and great weather,
meaning we all came back with a tan.
The route itself wasn't too complicated, but with
only maps and compasses, we had to work hard to
keep on track. After hours of hiking, we reached
the campsite and set up tents. Unfortunately, my
team had only brought a small carton of tomato
sauce for our pasta which was pretty disgust-
ing. We went to bed that night tired and excited
for the day ahead.
We continued our expedition the next morning
after a breakfast of Belvita and porridge. After a
couple of detours, we reached the train station re-
lieved and exhausted. It was a great weekend and I
look forward to my silver expedition.
Duke of Edinburgh Expedition
The Duke of Edinburgh Expedi-
tion was like two days of a crazy
adventure.
It was tough, hot, funny,
frustrating, challenging and
rewarding. The timetable seemed
packed but it taught us to work
as a team and to depend on each
other for the skills we each had.
This really helped when we
arrived at camp in the evening.
We got our tent up and our
food sorted. We were all ready
to eat and go to bed… Wasn’t
the best night’s sleep I’ve ever had but it was an experience! On
the second day we finished the
challenge in good time. The
sense of achievement was great. I
never knew I was capable of
finishing an expedition but I now
feel more confident for the next
one!

NEWS FROM OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY
On Friday 6th July, Bolingbroke Academy, Wandsworth hosted the annual London Rock Wrangle organised by Times
Tables Rock Stars, where over 50 schools from across Greater London competed in a huge Times Tables-Off.
The event saw over 150 students, aged between 10 - 12, compete in a series of heats and the grand final, to see who
would be crowned the Supreme Ultimate Rock Hero for Eternity at their Times Tables.
The winner, Ali Al-Bhadly from Addison Primary School in Hammersmith, answered an incredible 402 multiplication
questions correctly in 3 minutes. His prize was a helicopter flight over London for him and his team!
Mrs Victoria Hill of Bolingbroke Academy, said “Congratulations to Claudia, Marco, Devin and Mariam for repre-
senting Bolingbroke at the Rock Wrangle this year. Marco was our Bolingbroke Times Tables champion and narrowly
missed out on a place in the extremely competitive semi-finals. Bring on next year! “
Times Tables Rock Stars (www.ttrockstars.com) is the brainchild of Bruno Reddy, former Maths Teacher. It is a web
and app-based programme which schools and families use to help their children improve their times tables recall
speed and accuracy. TTRS, which uses a rock theme to engage the children, is now being used in more than 10,000
schools across the UK and in over 15 countries.
Bruno said “Rock Wrangles are a brilliant way to showcase the talents of the children in their times tables and to
make maths fun.” This is one of a series of 2018 Rock Wrangle events for schools hosted by Times Tables Rock Stars
across the UK.

IN THE LIBRARY
Our favourite library moments from 2017-18!
2. World Book Day 2018
To celebrate this year’s World Book Day, Bolingbroke
staff and sixth form kept tradition and once again
arrived to school dressed as their favourite book
characters. Students spent the day guessing who was
who, winning extra bonus points if they could name the
book a department had dressed as. Well done to
Phoebe Davies and Chloe Burrows who discovered the
identity of the most book characters!

3. Angie Thomas Author Visit
In March, a group of Bolingbroke Academy students along with Ms
Meddle travelled to Ark King Solomon Academy to meet with
American author Angie Thomas. The author’s debut book The Hate U
Give, which has since been awarded the Amnesty CILIP Honour award,
was the focus of what was an extremely inspiring event. The Hate U
Give is based on the Black Lives Matter movement and has been one of
the most popular books in our library this year.

1. The Scary Story Competition
In October it was Horror month in the library and to kick start
the theme we challenged Bolingbroke Academy to write a
horror story in no more than 15 words. Casper Harrison-Wydra
won with his chilling tale winning himself a free book!

4. International Women’s Day 2018
This year Bolingbroke Academy celebrated International Women’s Day by focusing
on the 100th year anniversary since many women gained the vote in the UK. To com-
memorate the centenary, the library encouraged students to imagine they were a suf-
fragette in 1918 petitioning for the right to vote and design a protest banner. Bella
Grimsey and Lucy Parker won for their team effort to create this catchy slogan.
6. Accelerated Leader Royal Wedding Street Party
In May, the top 25 Accelerated Reader quizzers at Bolingbroke
Academy were invited to a very special event in the library – a
royal themed street party inspired by Prince Harry and Meghan’s
Wedding! In a celebration of the excellent reading and quizzes
completed this academic year, the 25 students enjoyed an
afternoon of sweet treats alongside plenty of royal activities.
5. Pupil Librarian Training Day
This academic year also saw the appointment of the new Bolingbroke Academy Pupil Librarian team.
As part of their training, the pupil librarians journeyed to the Elm Green School to attend a workshop on what it
means to be a librarian. During the day they got the chance to meet children’s author Sally Nicholls who signed
their copies of her latest novel Things a Bright Girl Can Do.
