Inside and out, the 2008 Toyota Highlander has been totally redesigned to achieve new levels of comfort, convenience
and style. Along the way, Highlander helps you in ways that let you see what the future holds. Ways that reveal what
a difference a thoughtfully integrated idea can make. Ways that make you see everything in a new light. Once youve
experienced the all-new, larger Highlander, youll wonder how you ever lived without one.
The all-new Highlander makes a strong design statement, expressing a forceful, forward-looking presence from every
angle. Highlander is here to raise the bar of refinement and sophistication with expressive surfaces and dynamic
forms. At first glance, you might not think theres a 7-passenger vehicle with 4-wheel-drive capability wrapped
inside the sleek, aerodynamic silhouette. But the all-new Highlander defies convention.

The sumptuous interior is designed to elevate the experience of driving.
Everything that surrounds you, from the elegantly illuminated instrumentation
to subtle tones and textures of surface materials, is a delight to your senses.
Reach your hand to the new 4-spoke tilt/telescopic steering wheel, available
with mounted controls that let you adjust the audio,1 climate,2 voice-activated
DVD navigation system3 and hands-free functions for compatible Bluetooth4
equipped cell phones. And the all-new Highlander raises the standard for
seating versatility and cargo carrying. The whole interior is longer, by four
inches. That means theres more legroom between the front- and second-row
seats, and between the second- and third-row seats. Highlanders engineers
used a concept called stadium seating each row rises higher than the previous
row to enhance the sense of space for those riding in the third-row seat.

Instruments of Change. The instrument on Highlander Hybrid doesnt merely
tell you how fast youre going. It shows you the mode youre driving in,
and lets you see just how economically youre driving.
Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) Integration of Electronic
On-Demand 4-Wheel Drive system with intelligence (4WD-i), electronic brake
and throttle control, and an electronically controlled active steering system
means Highlander Hybrid drivers possess the most advanced form of todays
most exciting transportation technology.
Introducing the next-generation Highlander Hybrid.
With an advanced Hybrid Synergy Drive system
thats been upgraded and refined for 2008,
the all-new Highlander Hybrid offers both more
power and more intelligence to maximize fuel
economy. Our engineers were able to i ncrease
the output to 270 net horsepower, while keeping
fuel economy impressive.
HIGHLANDER HYBRID.
ECON Mode Press the ECON button, and Highlander Hybrid automatically modifies its throttle response to help
make its operation even more economical. Press down hard on the accelerator, and the engine throttle response
is modulated automatically to help reduce fuel consumption. And by reducing engine output, ECON mode also helps
minimize wheel slippage and thus improves acceleration in low traction conditions like ice- and snow-covered roads.
EV Mode In EV mode, Highlander Hybrid runs exclusively on its electric motor. Its intended for low-speed driving
situations where youre in an enclosed structure inching your way out of an underground parking structure,
for example. By operating the vehicle only with its electric power, EV mode helps reduce noise and emissions.

1. Gasoline engine utilized for acceleration on cold starts and full acceleration. 2. The preceding are based on a likely scenario for driving conditions.
Starting. From initial light or
moderate acceleration to low
speeds, Highlander Hybrid is
powered solely by the high-
torque electric motor.1
Normal Running. In normal driving
conditions, the gasoline engine will
start to supplement the electric
power to the wheels and also
charge the battery when needed.
Full Acceleration. Under full throttle
acceleration, power from both the
gasoline engine and the electric
motor are committed to providing
power to the wheels.
Deceleration/Braking. When
slowing, the gas engine shuts off
and resistance from the braking
system provides energy to charge
the battery.
Stopping. When the Highlander
Hybrid comes to a stop,
its gasoline engine shuts
off to conserve fuel and
reduce emissions.2

The 2008 Highlander comes with one of the most comprehensive
lists of standard safety features in its class, including seven airbags,
advanced traction, braking and stability control technologies, to help
you avoid an accident in the first place.
Safety and Performance:SAFETY AND PERFORMANCE.
With its 3.5-litre 270-hp V6 engine and full-time 4WD system, the all-new Highlander
offers responsive performance and sure-footed traction. But what truly distinguishes
Highlander is the feeling of ease it imparts to its driver and passengers.
Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) Starting off on a steep or slippery incline can be tricky.
HAC helps to ensure smooth hill starts by applying brake pressure to all four wheels
for approximately two seconds in order to hold Highlander and prevent rollback.
DownhillAssist Control(DAC) Controlling a vehicle during a steep descent can also
be a challenge. DAC helps the driver negotiate steep, low-speed descents confidently
by automatically controlling the brake-force at all four wheels. DAC helps reduce wheel
lock-up, thus ensuring steering performance and enhancing the drivers ability to avoid
obstacles and change direction.
Snow-Covered Road? Simply press a button and the transmission
automatically adjusts to help make driving on slippery surfaces more
secure and when you accelerate from a standstill, it will start in second
gear to help prevent the drive wheels from spinning.
LET IT SNOW.
Seven Airbags. (A) Highlanders passive safety systems
include advanced Supplemental Restraint System (SRS)
front airbags for the drivers and front passenger seats.
(B) SRS front seat-mounted side airbags also provide
protection to the driver and front-seat passenger in
the event of certain types of side-impact collisions.
(C) And new for 2008 is a knee-airbag for the driver.
(D) Roll-Sensing Curtain Airbags, or RSCA, help provide
protection for all three rows of seats not only in a side
collision, but in the event of a vehicle rollover.
(E) The front seats also incorporate newly developed
active headrests. The occupants lower back applies
pressure that moves the headrest up and forward in
the event of a severe rear-end collision.
Traction Control (TRAC) A system that uses
Highlanders advanced braking technologies
to help control wheel spin when starting or
accelerating on a slippery surface.
Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) helps
prevent the vehicle from slipping sideways
as a result of severe skidding while cornering
and improves stability by automatically
regulating engine output and brake-force
distribution to the wheels.
Antilock Brake System (ABS) helps prevent
the wheels from locking up and causing
the vehicle to skid on a slippery surface.
Enhanced VSC supplements conventional
ABS with assist torque for the Electric Power
Steering(EPS). When you brake in a straight
line on a road surface with different left-right
traction characteristics (asphalt with grip
under the left-side tires, slippery snow under
the right), enhanced VSC works with EPS
to automatically respond to differences in
the left-right brake-force.
Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD)
distributes brake-force between the left and
right wheels to help maintain vehicle control
during cornering, based on driving conditions
and vehicle loads.
Brake Assist aids drivers during panic braking.
If the brake pedal is suddenly and rapidly
depressed, the system detects this and Brake
Assist helps the driver by generating a greater
brake-force.
