HIGHLAND PARK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

The President’s Message

Dear UMW Friends,

Remember the rhyme ”April showers bring May flowers”? We have heard this rhyme all our lives. This is the rhyme that we tell our children in the springtime to introduce them to the life cycle of the seasons. We share with them that periods of discomfort can provide basis for period of happiness. It also is a lesson in patience reminding us that we often have to wait for good things to happen.

In April Dawn Anderson shared her thoughts on “How to Deal with Tragic Loss” and how to handle the storms in our lives. As we enter May we see the fruits of our labor from the seeds that we have planted. May is a time of new life and promise as we travel through our spiritual journey.

At our May Dinner Program Rachel Roberts, SMU Perkins School of Theology Graduate Student

and Cox Chapel Worship Assistant, will present “Be.Live.Now: Practicing a Spiritually Relevant Life in a World of Abundance”. We invite all of you to join us for the program to learn more about your spiritual journey and how to live your life to the fullest.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the May Dinner Program. Remember, there has never been a wind that did not change direction, clouds do not hang forever, and April showers do bring May flowers.

Blessings,Cheri

HPUMC’s church library has a shelf with many of the books on the UMW Reading List which are available for you to check out. A list of these books can be found on the UMW website at www.hpumc.org/umw. Here are two suggested books from our 2014 Reading Resources:

ESTHER by John PiperPiper captures our imagination and hearts as he introduces us to Esther the poor orphan and Esther the Persian queen, cre-atively musing about what could have been in the mind of what really was. Piper’s poetry awakens wonder as we experience the beginnings and endings of Esther’s life and see throughout the purposeful hand of god.

JESUS: A Biography from a Believer by Paul JohnsonFew figures have had such an influence on history as Jesus of Nazareth. Here, Paul Johnson distills the life of his complex subject into a highly readable work. The result is an accessi-ble biography and an insightful analysis of how Jesus remains important today.

In a culture of instant gratification, constant entertain-ment and ready-made meals, everything has become so easy for us. Or has it? Could it be that the things that matter most, such as attaining the peace that surpasses all understanding, is all the more difficult to grasp?

Rachel Roberts, an experienced and energetic speaker, will draw from her graduate theology studies to explore three simple steps that can help move us on the journey toward union with Christ. And in that place, peace and love are fully realized.
