Hi Neighbors! Once again, it's been a real quiet quarter these last few months. No news is good news? You may have heard from our Facebook group that there's a planning application for a parking garage at the north end of Guadalupe, opposite Gateway Baptist Church. Not sure if they'll get their permit, their site plan is over 30 years old. The lawyers are arguing about it now. Highland's NPCT recently found out that the office building next to it is being bought by an Austin based video game development company, Certain Affinity. They'll be in the old Texas Association of School Boards building. We also have a new live music venue, next door to Westbrook Metals. If you like noise, punk, and people in jorts screaming a whole lot, check out Shirleys Temple DIY on the book of faces. In the "making slow and steady progress" category:

• Highland's first grocery store is coming along, the businesses are prepping to move in asap, still hoping to open by March 2017.

• In Pork Chop related news, this will, barring a miracle, end up in a fight in front of council. While we're disappointed that this couldn't have been fixed sooner and with less red tape, if it goes to council it's pretty much in the bag. Councilor Pool will be able to state, correctly, that she fought against it as much as she could.

• Highland Park's next step is to get some funding. The millions of dollars we need for completion should turn up after the 2018 bond election, but Friends of Highland Park is already investigating a number of quicker funding alternatives. Big thanks to CM Casar for some behind the scenes deals he's trying to make on our behalf - updates as we get them.

Coming up in November is Council election, don't forget to vote! Also, the HNA meeting will meet for our quarterly meeting on September 13th, at the Marchesa, as usual. We'll hopefully have Greg Casar if he's not too busy with City Budget Meetings, Corrine Seinz, Reilly's new principal, maybe Marla with a Park update, and our community liaison officer. See you then? City Code Reminders

Place recycling and garbage carts at the curb by 6:30 a.m. on collection day but not prior to 8 p.m. the evening before. Set your carts at least 5 feet apart and away from cars, mailboxes, trees, water meter, and overhead wires. There must be at least 14 feet of clearance at the curb line. Always place the handle of the cart toward your house. They must be returned to their storage area on private property by 10 p.m. on the designated collection day. Before You Recycle

Rinse food residue off all recyclables Dry paper before placing it in your cart Crush recyclables like cans, plastic jugs and bottles Flatten boxboard and corrugated cardboard Remove any metal components from plastic items

Stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Property owners must drain stagnant water on their properties. Typical sources of stagnant water include pools in disrepair, tires and buckets. Street and Bridge crews are responsible for repairs and maintenance in the city’s right-of-way (ROW), including public roads, alleys, sidewalks, multi-use trails and public trees. But did you know property owners are responsible for maintaining their trees and all other vegetation to the edge of the street or alley? To ensure ease of mobility and safety for all Austin residents, it is important to keep these areas free of obstructions. When notified, the City will prune or remove trees that pose a hazard to the public (dead, diseased, low limbs) and trees or limbs downed by storms. Crews and City contractors also perform routine mowing of medians and prune public trees along selected routes.

HIGHLAND REDEVELOPMENT

UPDATE (Submitted by Katrina Daniel)

Friends: So much is happening at Highland these days: site remediation of the former Dillard's store for the future Rackspace offices is complete, construction of the 300-unit multifamily community is well underway and new roads that will connect a whole new Highland are about to open, just to name a few. With all the changes taking place, I'm sharing with you our new "Happening Now at Highland" document so you have the latest vision for the redevelopment. We've also recently launched our new website:www.HighlandATX.com, where you can view the overall plan, an illustrated map that identifies the major elements of the developing site and a downloadable vision book. Additionally, we're now onTwitter and Instagram. I invite you to take a look at your earliest convenience. Thanks for your continued interest in what's happening at Highland. Sincerely, Matt Whelan, Principal RedLeaf Properties

GREG CASAR CHECKING IN Hi everyone! I hope you all have had a great summer. Your City Council is at work on some big issues right now: we’re setting Austin Energy rates (I support lowering them), finalizing the City Budget, beginning the process of recruiting a new City Manager, and finalizing details on the transportation and mobility bond for this November. There's a lot to keep up with, and we'll share as much information as possible, but please don't hesitate to contact my office if you have any questions as the City Council sets out to make several important decisions within the next month. City Budget Some of my priorities for this year's budget include securing funding to support AISD students and families through Parent Support Specialists and after school programs, ensuring our Police Department processes sexual assault evidence in a timely manner so that justice for sexual assault survivors isn't further delayed, expanding our Homeless Outreach Street Team into areas like North Austin, allocating funding for health and human services programs to take a preventative approach to public safety issues, and supporting our parks and recreation centers in North Austin. Transportation Bond Council has been working tirelessly on a bond proposal to bring to voters this November. For the past several months I have advocated for a robust bond package that addresses the mobility and safety needs of North Austin neighborhoods. This package could include up to $85 million in improvements to North Lamar and $75 million in improvements to Airport Blvd, as well as more funding than ever before to build missing sidewalks and bike trails to make our neighborhoods safer and more connected. I’ve asked the Council to include a potential rail line up Guadalupe and Lamar, but that proposal has been delayed for additional discussion between now and 2017. Regardless, I’m confident that by the time you read this the City Council will have approved a proposal that reflects the needs of North Austin. If you have additional questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me via email at [email protected] or by phone at 512-978-2104. If you are interested in learning about upcoming In-District Office Hours, please don't hesitate to contact my Communications Director at [email protected].
