Welcome to the Bull Run District 2017 Fall Camporee – HIGHLAND GAMES You are invited to participate in the Bull Run District’s Fall Camporee. Whether you are attending as a new scout on the trail to First Class, or an experienced Scout looking to share your knowledge and leadership to others; please help us in providing cheerful service, outstanding leadership, and FUN!

*********************************************************

Please read this entire Handbook, it will explain the rules and logistics for this year’s Camporee.

**********************************************************

The most successful Troop’s at this year’s Camporee will have thoroughly read and attained a complete understanding of all the information covered in this handbook. This Camporee is primarily an activity to enhance the Patrol Method within your Troop. It is also a chance for your scouts to show off their skills at camp making, cooking, teamwork, and cooperative methods of taking on tasks. All activities are run with the Patrol Method in mind. Camping may be done as a Troop; however, each Patrol (as registered) will be judged in their ability to camp, complete scout skills, and compete as a team (Patrol). Each Patrol should maintain an individual campsite within the larger Troop area.

CAMPOREE GENERAL INFORMATION

Check-In: Check-in is in the admin building (on your right as you enter Camp Snyder) from 6:00-9:00pm on Friday night. Please do not show up any earlier than 6pm unless you are on staff for the weekend. This allows the staff a chance to prepare everything before check-in begins without interruption. Senior Patrol Leaders and one adult leader will need to check their Troops in immediately upon arrival at camp. UNIT LEADERS MUST POSESS A COPY OF BSA MEDICAL FORMS (PARTS A&B) FOR ALL SCOUTS IN ATTENDANCE! Campsites: You will receive your campsite assignments before the Camporee. If you have any special requests, please contact Irwin Lazar at [email protected] Camporee Fees: Fees are $18. You may pre-register at https://scoutingevent.com/082-BRScottishGames2017 and pay in advance, but note that there are no refunds. You may also RSVP in advance by contacting Irwin Lazar at [email protected] and paying via check made out to NCAC when you arrive. Volunteers: Each Troop/Unit will need to provide two senior scouts (Star or above) to assist with the stations. It does not need to be the same two for the entire day so you can rotate youth throughout the day. Vehicles in Camp: You may bring vehicles to your campsite to unload. You may leave a trailer at your campsite. However all vehicles, including those that towed the trailer, MUST be brought to the main parking lot. NO VEHICLES ARE PERMITTED OVERNIGHT AT CAMPSITES!!!!! Camp Snyder Logistics:

• Potable water is available from a spigot on the loading dock behind the dining hall • All trash must be deposited in the dumpsters behind the dining hall • Bathhouses may be available, if not portable toilets will be available at each bathhouse • Dead wood from fallen trees may be gathered and burned in fire pits at each camp site, please do

not bring outside wood into the camp OA The OA will be conducting flag retirements throughout the day on Saturday at the Amphitheater. Arrowmen who wish to assist should contact their OA representative prior to the Camporee. Uniforms: All Troops will need to be in “official” Class “A” uniform on arrival and for all Flag Ceremonies. Saturday’s activities will be in Class B uniforms.

Medical and Emergency Procedures: A first aid station will be located near the Camp Chapel during the day on Saturday. Units are expected to manage issues outside of those hours. Electronic Equipment: Please leave ALL electronic equipment at home e.g. Game boys, radios, CD players, laptops. Etc. These only cause distractions to the programs. Camp Fire: Saturday evening there will be a campfire at the fire ring to close out the weekend’s festivities. Each Troop/Crew/Team is to have a song and a skit ready for the enjoyment of the District. This is also where the awards earned through the weekend will be awarded and where Saturday’s flag retirements will occur. Camporee Patches: One Camporee patch will be given to each paid participant, this includes scouts and adults. Awards / Scoring System: Best Patrol will be chosen for each event. We encourage Patrols to come as they are on a regular scout basis and not load one patrol with all the older scouts and leave the younger scouts hoping to defend on their own. This should be viewed as a positive learning experience and helping one another grow through scouting activities. Troop will have their Patrols’ points added to any points the Troop may accumulate and their inspection total. The Troop with the highest score wins the Highlander Cup. Camporee Patches and Awards:

• Top Patrol awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place overall. • Top Troop awards for 1st, 2nd. And 3rd place overall. • Best Campsite Award • Spirit Award for Patrol • Spirit Award for Troop

Religious Observance: Catholic Mass will be held at 6:30 PM on Saturday at the Chapel. A non-denomination religious service will be held Sunday morning. It is expected that every Scout and Scouter attend this service. Class “A” uniform is required. Please check the schedule you receive for details. Campsite Inspections: All Troops will have a campsite inspection on Saturday morning. All campsites will be inspected at the same time so no one can say they had more time to prepare. Use your time wisely on Friday night and early Saturday so you can be prepared. There will be an award given out for best campsite and points awarded towards final totals. See inspection sheet for more details concerning what is needed or being looked for. Campsite Inspections: (Total 700 points)

To ALL Adult Leaders: A camporee is a great place to see old friends and meet new ones; however, the staff is NOT here to maintain discipline of your scouts or insure that they are properly cared for. You need to be aware of their actions at all times. Ensure that your Scouts act like Scouts, keeping the Scout Oath and Law foremost in their minds. This may require you to visit less and monitor your Scouts more. Note that coffee will be available all day at the Chapel!! We need your participation and help to truly make this a great Camporee!! Events Patrol Events (Morning) Braemar Stone: Historically, the Braemar Stone Putt stems from a common practice by early Highland Chieftains who kept a large stone outside their gatepost, and challenged the throwing arms of every visiting clan's warriors. In the Braemar Stone Putt, athletes throw a stone from a stationary position (no running approach allowed). The competitor cannot touch the top of the trig (toe bar) nor the ground beyond it before or after the throw. 2 different size/weight stones will be provided to accommodate the 2 age groups. (Under 14, & 14 and older) (Average Distance for each patrol, best patrol wins 10 points) Log Drag: Practice that timber hitch, because it may come in handy. The scouts run to the log and tie a timber hitch to one end of the log and a bowline to the other end of the rope. Three scouts can get inside the bowline and drag the log across the line. (Fastest Time wins 10 points) Tossing the Caber: The caber toss is a traditional Scottish athletic event practiced at the Scottish Highland Games involving the tossing of a large wooden pole called a caber, similar to a telephone pole or power pole. It is said to have developed from the need to toss logs across narrow chasms to cross them. In Scotland the caber is usually made from a Larch pine tree. A caber typically is 19 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds. Ours will not be as big. We will have 2 sizes for the 2 age groups. (Under 14, & 14 and older) Participants will be required to stand up the pole, lift it from the bottom and hold it upright. Then with forward motion flip the pole trying to keep the pole as straight as possible. Distance will be calculated to the distance of the colored end tip and a one foot deduction will be taken for each degree off of straight. (We will use a clock face for degree calculations i.e. 1, 2, 3…8, 10, 11 o’clock) Sample- if you throw and the painted end lands 20 feet and falls at the 10 o’clock position you would receive 18 feet. 20-2=18 (Average score for each patrol, best patrol wins 10 points) Tossing the Sheaf:. The sheaf toss is a traditional Scottish agricultural sport event originally contested at country fairs. A pitchfork is used to hurl a burlap bag stuffed with straw over a horizontal bar above the competitor's head. Typical weight for the bag is 16 pounds (about 7 kg). We will not be using pitchforks, but short snow shovels instead. We are adapting that slightly and will be flinging for distance. (Farthest Throw wins 10 points) Farmer’s Walk: The competitor picks up two weights, one in each hand, and walks around a series of pylons (figure eight). The entire patrol will line up in single file; the first member carries the weights around the course, sets them down, moves to the end of the line, and the second picks up the weights and starts to move again. This is a timed event for all patrol members. (Fastest Time wins 10 points) Troop Events (Afternoon) Tug-o-war: Troop teams will compete for a Camporee Champion. (Winning Troop gets 25 points) Run with Kilt: One person per unit will compete in a run around camp. In order to run, the runner must be wearing a kilt of some kind. (5 Fastest times get points (1st – 25 pts, 2nd – 20 pts, 3rd – 15 pts, 4th 10 pts, 5th – 5 pts) Inspections: Some time after lunch, the inspection team will visit your campsite to judge on gateway construction and Camporee site inspection standards. Scout Spirit: Additional points are given for theme participation: kilts, crests and coat of arms, theme-related skits, etc. (Pts added at discretion of District Commissioner Staff and designees)

Resources: Here are a few items that will help you transform your scouts into Scottish Highlanders and to get into the Spirit of the Weekend: Construct a gateway to go along with the theme of the weekend. The gateway can be fun and original or a traditional structure. Design a Clan banner: This banner is a required item for your gateway. The design for your banner is limitless, but it should be something that reflects your Troop. References of traditional designs and their meanings can be found at: http://www.fleurdelis.com/meanings.htm http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/gbsccln.html Develop a clan cheer or yell. This will be used during activities, games and events. If you wish…adopt a Clan Tartan and make kilts. These are to be worn during the Highland Games. We suggest that you do not go out and purchase kilts. Go to a fabric store and buy a roll of fabric. Also…Please wear shorts underneath your kilt!!
