Coordinator of Multicultural Student Retention

About the Fellowship Site: Middlesex Community College provides access to affordable education for a diverse community from all ethnic backgrounds and identities, preparing individuals for success and lifelong learning. The Multicultural Center provides educational, social, and cultural activities that support diversity education. Position Description: The Office of International and Multicultural Affairs is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment that encourages dialogue, learning, education, and diversity. The role of the Coordinator is to develop and implement educational programs and support services to meet the needs of underserved students from diverse backgrounds. The Coordinator will work collaboratively with other departments to contribute to the college's overall goal of ensuring that all students feel welcome and part of our campus community. In collaboration with members of the Office of International and Multicultural Affairs staff, the Coordinator will play a pivotal, leadership role in the development and implementation of campus initiatives that focus on academic success and retention of underserved students.

Estimated percentage of work that involves in-person contact with students: 95%

Position Responsibilities: • Assist with creating and implementing sustainable department initiatives which focus on cultivating multicultural

education, leadership development, and social justice issues • Support the college’s retention efforts through individual retention efforts with students as well as participating

in the overall retention plan at MCC • Assist with the recruitment and support of students who utilize the services of the Multicultural Centers

on the Lowell and Bedford campuses. Work with current MCC Multicultural groups to provide leadership and guidance ensuring that students are served effectively.

• Plan, coordinate and assess diverse programs and activities such as Heritage Months, Social Justice Models, and Intercultural Dialogues for students in conjunction with student organizations, departments & community partners

• Assist with the coordination and implementation of the Diversity Peer Educator Program for emerging leaders who promote an inclusive and welcoming community both in and out of the classrooms

• Assist International and Multicultural staff in developing and implementing programs focused on supporting students from ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds and providing resources to the campus community regarding diversity, social justice and inclusion

• Design and implement the annual Social Justice in Action Conference • Work collaboratively with departments, faculty, and staff to improve academic success and retention of

Service-Learning Fellow

About the Fellowship Site: Middlesex Community College is a public institution with campuses in Bedford and Lowell, Mass. The college offers Associate Degrees and Credit and Noncredit Certificates. Position Description: The Fellow will work collaboratively with the Coordinator of Civic and Service-Learning and the Service-Learning Program Assistant to support the service-learning needs of the students, faculty and community partners. In the 2021-2022 academic year, the Fellow will be working directly with the Coordinator of Civic and Service-Learning to transform the Service-Learning program from an hours-based, direct-service approach to a more Civic learning and community engagement approach. The Fellow will gain experience with curriculum creation, establishing community partnerships and working with students to develop projects that allow them to directly apply what they are learning in their classroom to create solutions to real world problems that impact their community.

Estimated percentage of work that involves contact with students: 50%. This number may be impacted by the as-yet-to-be-determined plan for Fall 2021 due to COVID 19. Contact may be virtual, in-person or hybrid.

Position Responsibilities: • Manage the Service-Learning department which includes providing ongoing support for students, faculty, and

community partners while organizing course material, assisting students to locate placements, and providing ongoing support for students, faculty, and community partners

• Support the Coordinator and other staff as we work to transform the service-learning program to a more community-engaged, civic learning approach

• Assist with the management of events sponsored by the Office of Civic & Service-Learning including the monthly service opportunity, service-learning recognition events, and Alternative Spring Break (if possible)

• Responsible for researching and developing potential programming opportunities • Coordinate the Service-Learning Give Pulse database, including preparing it for use each semester, updating it

throughout the semester, and entering all necessary data at the end of the semester • Responsible for generating reports based on information in the database • Respond to a large number of daily student e-mails during placement selection and moderate number of daily

e-mails thereafter • Conduct class presentations during the first three weeks of the semester, including evening and online classes • Develop an “in-person” presence for service-learning on the Lowell and Bedford campuses including drop-in

hours and meetings by appointment (office hours may be virtual) • Communicate with current community partners when needed and assist in developing new community

partnerships, including a number of site visits each semester, and create partnerships with new sites • Attend MCC and Massachusetts Campus Compact-sponsored professional development workshops as approved

by MCC supervisor • Assist with organizing Service-Learning events, programs, and workshops • Deepen support for faculty on reflection assignments to meet student learning outcomes

MERRIMACK COLLEGE, OFFICE OF THE DEAN OF STUDENT SUCCESS North Andover, MA Academic Success Coach and Retention Fellow

Position Description:

The Academic Success Coach and Retention Fellow will work closely with staff in the Dean’s Suite in the Academic Success Center on retention efforts and case management of students with academic concerns. They will work as an Academic Success Coach, meeting with individual students, and monitoring a caseload of at-risk students. The fellow will be responsible for outreach to these students and triaging any concerns they bring up. They will help the students develop skills such as critical thinking and reading, writing, time management strategies, goal setting and discipline through one-on-one meetings, participation in classes and events, and workshops. They will also review academic concern cases in the CARE system and delegate cases to ASC staff as needed, track progress in resolving cases, as well as provide outreach to faculty and staff who submit CARE reports. The fellow will also participate in the campus-wide Retention Intervention Team and other campus-wide committee efforts to ensure that at the end of each semester, students are registered for a full course load for the next semester. Finally, the fellow will utilize social media tools, both to market the Academic Success Center to students and faculty, and also as a way to communicate with students more effectively. Roles and responsibilities of the fellow will fluctuate throughout the academic year based on student needs at that point in the semester. For example, case management tasks may increase around high-stress times for students, such as midterms and finals.

Overall, this position can expect to spend about 75% of their time in direct, meaningful contact with students.

Position Responsibilities:

• Provide support, motivation, and guidance to freshmen students • Assist in organization/execution of projects and workshops geared towards first year freshmen and academic

readiness • Assist the staff in supporting critical reading, thinking and writing skills, addressing academic insecurities, test-taking

strategies, time management and other academic readiness skills • Meet with students one-on-one for academic counseling meetings, including maintaining outreach and

communication with the students through e-mail and other electronic communication • Maintain reports, perform research and track data of student progress, student interaction and attendance • Maintain a team attitude and complete any and all duties and tasks as assigned • Participate with other fellows in the work of the Academic Success Center as a member of the larger team of

student support personnel, including academic counseling for the monitored program, attending staff meetings, special events

Additional Requirements/Qualifications:

• Interest in college readiness, developmental education, student services and support, and student retention • Excellent communication and public speaking skills; excellent organizational and time management skills • Interest in the developmental psychology of adolescents ages 18-22, specifically freshmen students in transition • Ability to maintain confidentiality and remain non-judgmental when addressing student problems and concerns • Assist in the management of the ASC e-mail and the distribution of critical information to key stakeholders across

campus (i.e. placement exam scores, midterm grades to advisors, “Did Not Register” info, etc.) • Assist in the organization/execution of retention initiatives • Participate in professional development opportunities to strengthen advising skills (i.e. Apple Training, ASC

Workshops, Lunch & Learns, webinars) • Strong computer skills, and experience using Microsoft Excel and Google Apps. Experience with educational

databases is preferred but not required.

MERRIMACK COLLEGE, ACADEMIC SUCCESS CENTER, ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES North Andover, MA

Accessibility Services Graduate Office Advisor and Academic Success Coach

Position Description: The ASO Graduate Office Advisor in the Accessibility Services Office in the Academic Success Center will work closely with Accessibility Services staff, the Academic Success Center staff, and the college community. Over the course of a year-long experience, the ASO Graduate Office Advisor will gain an understanding of college disability services and be involved in the process of accommodations from the initial stage of “Requesting for Services" through ongoing student support. The Accessibility Services Staff and the Graduate Office Advisor will collaborate on projects that are of interest to the Graduate Office Advisor and that benefit the Office. Over the year, the Graduate Office Advisor will be responsible for learning the process for outreach to students, faculty and staff on behalf of the general office workflow and our Testing Center as well as maintaining a caseload of students as an Academic Success Coach. Throughout the year, the Advisor will gain a basic understanding of the FERPA and ADA laws that govern college-level accommodations and communication with students and families. The Advisor will begin to have a deeper understanding and working knowledge of the ADA and other legislation to interpret how accommodations are translated into the college environment. Should there be any special career interests for the Advisor, there will be opportunities to work with the supervisor on exploring these goals, such as gaining supervisory experience, specialized groups/programs, and/or participation in other accommodation areas/trainings/presentations.

Estimated percentage of work that involves in-person contact with students: 75-85%

Position Responsibilities: • Advise/coach students who are registered with the Accessibility Services Office (25%) • Maintain the Testing Center process including: working with students and faculty, and maintaining tracking (25%) • Responsible for the office email triage process and email responses (20%) • Administrative tasks that include updating and maintaining the Accessibility Services student roster, helping

MERRIMACK COLLEGE, ACADEMIC SUCCESS CENTER, ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES North Andover, MA

Activate Graduate Office Advisor and Academic Success Coach

Position Description: The Activate Program is a voluntary program for students who self-identify as neurodiverse (i.e., who identify as having Autism, Asperger’s, Social Communication, or possess characteristics that align with the autism spectrum). It provides opportunities for neurodiverse students to connect with each other through social events, receive coaching support from dedicated staff and mentors, and participate in professional development and career readiness programming. The Mentors (Activate upper-class students) are hired to work for the program and trained to provide supplemental coaching and other support in the transition of the first year Activate students to the college environment.

This Advisor will play a key role in outreach efforts to prospective and presently participating Activate students while assuming many responsibilities in the planning and implementation of meetings and professional development programming of Activate Mentors. As the position is housed within the Accessibility Services Office (ASO), the Activate Program Graduate Office Advisor and Academic Success Coach will gain a concrete understanding of numerous aspects of disability services, ranging from documentation review and determination of reasonable accommodations and ongoing student support, to learning about FERPA, the ADA, and other related laws that govern college-level accommodations.

Estimated percentage of work that involves in-person contact with students: 85%

Position Responsibilities: • Coach first year and sophomore students participating in the Activate Program on issues such as social skills, time

management, and organization (25%) • Coordinate numerous responsibilities of Activate Mentors including, but not limited to: maintain the Activate

Mentor Google Calendar for weekly meetings, events, and program requirements; develop mentorship skills and program preparation; design learning activities; and maintain attendance tracking (25%)

• Manage the Activate Program delegated email triage process and email responses, including communication concerning weekly social events and programming opportunities (20%)

• Update and maintain the Activate student roster and track student engagement in the Merrimack Connect Database, help with student assistive technology needs, and student follow-up/outreach (including Activate website and newsletter) (10%)

MERRIMACK COLLEGE, ACADEMIC SUCCESS CENTER North Andover, MA

Academic Support & Advising Graduate Associate (up to 2 positions)

Position Description:

The Office of Academic Support & Advising (AS&A) serves Merrimack College students across all majors and GPAs by providing academic support for building, strengthening, and maintaining the academic skills needed to perform at the college level. We offer this support through various programs, such as the Phoenix Program for our students on academic probation. The Phoenix Program offers a one-credit, one-hour-per-week, Foundations of Academic Development course for students on academic probation instructed by our Advisors and co-instructed by our Graduate Associates and Phoenix Peer Mentors and weekly one-to-one academic coaching appointments. The AS&A also offers Student Athlete Study Hours two evenings per week and is hosted by a pair of our Advisors and Graduate Associates. The Academic Support & Advising Office also offers one-to-one coaching, tutoring, workshops, events, and other programming throughout the year accessible to all students across campus. As one of the nine units of the Academic Success Center, AS&A works closely with colleagues and faculty, in conjunction with families, in efforts to promote the academic and personal development of all Merrimack College students.

The AS&A Graduate Associate will be involved in a variety of advising initiatives designed to educate and support students in succeeding academically. Through one-to-one coaching meetings, workshop development, co-instruction of Foundations of Academic Development, and acting as a role model in and outside of class, the AS&A Graduate Associate will guide students toward the development of good decision making and self-advocacy. In addition to being a contributing member of a fast-paced, high-touch team with direct contact and impact on students, AS&A Graduate Associates should be flexible and adaptable within this high-stakes work environment and must exhibit excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Position Responsibilities:

• Serve as a one-to-one academic counselor for a caseload of students, especially those on academic probation • Maintain reports and data tracking of student progress, interaction, and attendance • Participate in the design, teaching, and assessment of the PHX1050 course for students on academic probation • Assist the Director and/or Academic Advisor & Success Coaches in the creation, organization, development,

for professional development supervision • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with various constituencies outside the Center in order to promote the

Academic Coach, Compass Program (Freshmen Transition Program) Position Description: Compass was created for first year students who demonstrate promise, but who, for whatever reason, have not had the degree of academic success that aligns with their potential. Compass seeks to foster college readiness through a program of transformational learning experiences including small, specialized cohort courses, academic coaching, coordinated support services and gradually increasing self-reliance that will support the students’ educational goals. The graduate fellow for Compass will be responsible for assisting the Compass team in supporting entering freshmen whose histories suggest promise, but are in need of academic and social support to meet the demands of higher education. The projected student acceptance into Compass for Fall 2021 is 80 incoming freshmen; the graduate fellow will be responsible for providing academic coaching to a caseload of about 16. The Compass Fellow will receive training to help students transition between high school and college and develop skills such as critical thinking and reading, college-level writing, time management strategies, goal setting and self-discipline through one-on-one academic coaching meetings, team-led workshops, and general study time. Position Description:

The Drive Program provides intentional support to identified first year students at the college including first generation, low income, and other factors that indicate that proactive support and community involvement would be beneficial for the students’ success. The Drive Team works with students through individual academic success coaching and a tailored First Year Experience (FYE) course as they transition to college. The Drive Academic Success Coach is a go-to resource for college transition, academic strategies, and overall student success.

Drive expects to welcome 100 first-year students for the 2020-2021 academic year. The Drive Graduate fellow will be the one-on-one Academic Success Coach for 40-50 students. Fellows will work towards the larger programmatic goal of supporting students as they make the academic and personal transition to and through their first year at the college. The fellow will provide referrals to other campus resources, including counseling, career development, student involvement, and financial aid.

The fellow will be offered the opportunity to further their curriculum design and implementation skills by facilitating academic skill-building workshops and programs. Additionally, the fellow will manage the Drive Peer Leader team through ongoing training programs and supervision. Other opportunities may include social media and marketing efforts, supporting a section of a one-credit leadership course offered in the spring semester, collecting and analyzing reporting data at a college, and contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

The Drive Graduate Fellow will be supervised and mentored by the Assistant Director of the Drive Program. Initial training will be offered both through Drive and the larger Academic Success Center (ASC) in August. The fellow will continue to receive training and access to professional development opportunities throughout the year. First Year Experience Fellow (up to 2 positions) Position Description: The First Year Experience Fellow, with the staff of the First Year Experience Office, will support the organization and execution of the “First Year Experience”. The First Year Experience (FYE) consists of two major elements:

• A mandatory FYE course for all first year students, which is co-taught by an FYE Instructor (professional faculty/staff member) and an FYE Mentor (upperclassman student leader)

• Targeted initiatives/programs aimed at promoting engagement and retention of first year students

The First Year Experience Fellow’s main responsibility will be to coordinate the second element, the targeted initiatives/programs of the Office. The Fellow will spearhead the office’s signature programs (such as FYE BINGO, FYE Success Series workshops, etc.). The Fellow will also develop and establish new, creative targeted initiatives/programs.

The First Year Experience Fellow will support the FYE course by serving as a point-person for a caseload of FYE Mentors. As such, the First Year Experience Fellow will be the first point of professional contact for their caseload in terms of training and support. The First Year Experience Fellow will lead bi-weekly trainings for their Mentors, as well as meet individually with each FYE Mentor on their caseload at least twice throughout the semester.

In addition, as a member of the larger Academic Success Center team, the First Year Experience Fellow will work as an Academic Success Coach, meeting with individual at-risk, first year students. The fellow will be responsible for outreach to these students and triaging any concerns they bring up. The fellow will help the students develop skills such as critical thinking, reading, writing, time management, goal setting, and discipline through one-on-one meetings.

Holistic Success Coaching focuses on a proactive approach to first year student engagement and success. Every entering first year student is matched to a Holistic Success Coach. Coaches participate from a variety of student-facing offices across campus. Coaches proactively reach out to students and are available to discuss academics, student life, and the transition to college. The goal of the program is to help students foster a network of support for college transition and navigate Merrimack's student resources, contributing to a more equitable and inclusive campus. Staff participating in the program attend regular Success Coach trainings to inform and strengthen their work as coaches. Our Cross Training provides a community for coaches and covers topics such as academic support, wellness, mental health, student development and career development.

The graduate fellow for the Holistic Cross Training and Success Coaching Program will develop a variety of skills in a range of areas including supporting first year students, developing training and communications for Success Coaches, and assisting the Holistic Cross Training and Success Coaching team in developing reports for offices across the college via our Connect Database. The graduate fellow will also take part in Merrimack's campus-wide Holistic Success Coaching program and have a caseload of transitioning first year students to coach throughout the year. Promise Program Graduate Fellow & Success Coach (up to 2 positions) Position Description: Promise is a college transition program for a select number of first year students who are identified through the admissions process as those who would benefit from structured support. Students selected for Promise are expected to participate, and we anticipate 160 first year students will join us in Fall 2021. Each Fellow will contribute to the program’s goal of supporting the academic and personal transition of these students from high school through college. The Fellow will help students develop academic skills including time management, organization, and goal setting through one-on-one meetings. The Fellow will provide referrals to other campus services, including counseling, career development, and student involvement as appropriate. Each fellow will work directly with a caseload of first year students, learn the process of outreach to students, faculty and staff, and have the opportunity to co-teach credit-bearing course offerings through Promise. Additionally, Fellows will focus on one of the two Promise Leadership projects (listed below) and supervise 1-3 upperclass students connected to these projects.

1. Promise Student Advisory Board (PSAB) is a volunteer group of student leaders who are committed to supporting students in creating a sense of belonging. PSAB provides support with the social events, social media, and the sharing of feedback and ideas with the Promise staff on behalf of the Promise student body. The fellow will supervise the executive board, develop and implement training, and support the overall function of PSAB.

2. Peer Leaders are upper-class students selected to provide mentorship and supplementary academic support to students. The fellow will integrate the Peer Leader training curriculum into their supervisory meetings, co-facilitate and develop weekly training for the Peer Leaders, and provide project management support and development.

Transfer Admission Associate (up to 2 positions)

Position Description: The graduate fellow in Transfer Admission will be responsible for assisting Undergraduate (Day) Transfer Admission staff members with all aspects of the effective recruitment and enrollment of prospective Transfer students. As an Admission Associate, the graduate fellow(s) will interact daily with prospective students and families, as well as current students, faculty and staff members across campus, and should thus be an energetic, customer-service oriented self-starter who is comfortable communicating to diverse audiences. International Student Support Graduate Fellow Position Description: There are approximately 100 undergraduate and graduate international students at Merrimack College. Representing some 33 countries, our international students have to adjust and transition to the American culture and classroom. International Student Support (ISS) offers a customized orientation for international students and supports them with visa and immigration services, as well as programs to optimize the academic, professional, social, personal, and cultural transition to college and the United States. There are 2 professional staff in the office who work with students on immigration and compliance issues, help answer immigration questions, and help students successfully maintain their F1 visa status. In addition, there are 4 student mentors who run the Mentorship program, organize programs and events, run the social media platforms, and coordinate marketing efforts. Overall, the ISS office is international students’ “home away from home,” and they are welcome and encouraged to come in to socialize, as well as to address any issues that they may be facing inside and outside of the classroom. The International Student Support Graduate Fellow serves as an additional point of contact for international students studying at Merrimack College. The Fellow works closely with the student mentors and helps oversee the Mentorship program, answers any questions that may come from mentors or mentees, and resolves any issues that may arise. The Fellow plays an integral role in managing the student workers’ planning processes and execution of cultural events, as well as orientation, and other programming efforts. The fellow assists the International Student Support Specialist with reporting and academic success projects throughout the year. In addition, the fellow may collaborate with other units on campus (such as the Library, Hamel Health, or O’Brien Center for Career Development) to help ensure successful academic, personal, and professional development of international students on campus. The fellow will coordinate specific projects and initiatives to assist undergraduate students in their career exploration, and develop and deliver classroom presentations. Graduate Resident Director, (up to 5 two-year positions)

Position Description: The Graduate Resident Director (GRD) reports directly to the Area Coordinator (AC) in their assigned area. The GRD co- supervises a Resident Advisor (RA) staff. In conjunction with their supervisor, they are responsible for the overall administration and daily operation of the assigned area. Graduate Resident Directors in the 2-year position have the opportunity to take on additional leadership and mentorship opportunities in their second year. In addition, the successful candidate will be required to live in on-campus housing provided by the Office of Residence Life. This position requires a start date in early July.

Position Responsibilities:

• Be available and visible to the residential population, and engage residents on a regular basis. • Supervise the RA staff in conjunction with the AC • Serve as part of the on-call duty rotation; GRDs are considered emergency personnel during campus emergencies and

Affinity Student Engagement Graduate Fellow

Position Description: The Affinity Student Engagement Fellow reports directly to the Assistant Director of Housing Operations and Off-Campus Residential Services and the Assistant Dean of Students. The Fellow oversees programmatic and support efforts for student affinity groups, including commuter, graduate, first-generation, veteran, and transfer students. The Fellow assists in the supervision of the Commuter Advisor (CA) staff making sure they are meeting the needs of their students while offering a variety of programs and overseeing the commuter student lounge, creating a welcoming space for commuters. The Fellow will assist with a variety of programming, as well as student organizations including those for graduate, commuter, and veteran students. This position may require a start date one week prior to the official start date of the program. Position Responsibilities:

• Be available and visible to the student population, and engage students on a regular basis • Supervise the Commuter Advisor staff alongside the Assistant Director of Housing Operations and Off-Campus

Placement, Advising, and Student Support Graduate Fellow Position Description: The Placement, Advising, and Student Support (PASS) office within the Winston School of Education & Social Policy (WSESP) is a one-stop location for students to receive both academic and career advising. The Fellow will support students’ acclimation and transition, focusing primarily on first-year and transfer Education and Human Development & Human Services majors, but also assisting with other students as needed. The Fellow does not need to have prior knowledge or experience with an education academic program, but simply a desire to gain hands-on experience in advising and take an active role in working with students. The Fellow will have the opportunity to work with representatives from the O’Brien Career Center, the Academic Success Center, and the Merrimack Institute for New Teacher Support.

In addition to responsibilities within the PASS office, the Fellow will participate in administrative activities related to the WSESP. There may also be opportunities in other categories based on the needs of the WSESP, as well as the interests and career objectives of the Fellow.

Freshman Academic Advisor - Graduate Fellow

Position Description: The Freshmen Academic Advisor for business students will be primarily responsible for providing holistic advising and support services for Freshman students in the Girard School of Business (GSB). The Fellow will be an integral part of the Lucey Center for Business Advising, which integrates both academic and career advising in one centralized location, allowing a seamless approach to students’ success. The Freshman Academic Advisor will work primarily with the freshman class, and a small case load of Business minors and/or undeclared business sophomores. In addition, this role may be responsible to overseeing and supervising some of the peer advisors integrated within the center. The Fellow will take part in Merrimack's campus-wide Holistic Success Coaching program and as such have a small caseload of transitioning first year students to coach throughout the year. Duties include providing outreach and support to students, attending professional development trainings, and tracking student engagement in the Merrimack Connect Database. The Freshmen Academic Advisor will act as the primary advisor(s) for roughly 125-150 students, meeting and advising students in several formats (one-on-one, small group, and large group) to assist with course registration, mapping/tracking academic progress, updating individual advising trackers, declaring Business Administration majors/minors, addressing student questions, and other academic-related issues. Freshmen Academic Advisor will gain first-hand experience in a full range of activities involved in advising students. The Freshmen Advisor will work closely with other departments on campus, such as the Office of Student Success and the Office of International Programs. They will be a part of the GSB Dean’s administrative staff, interacting with the Assistant Deans, Lucey Center for Business Advising career and academic advisors, student workers, and faculty from each department/concentration. In addition, the Freshmen Academic Advisor(s) will gain experience working with multiple student populations, such as international, Compass, Honors, and athletes. The SHS puts a large emphasis on both academic and career advising and has continued to invest in a new Center for Academic and Career Advising whose goal is to provide students with comprehensive planning and advising to meet their academic and professional aspirations. The center focuses on individual advising so students gain the necessary didactic, experiential education, and professional development opportunities. The Academic Advising Graduate Fellow contributes to the program’s goal of supporting the academic advising needs of the students and center operations. The Fellow will help students determine what major may best help them meet their future career goals, map out semester schedules, operate MyMack, facilitate academic advising programming and more. Academic Advisor and Retention Specialist, Graduate Fellow

Position Description: The School of Liberal Arts has been working closely with the Academic Success Center on retention efforts. These efforts include: a) advising undeclared students in the Discover Program, b) major and career exploration/academic coaching, c) working with on-campus organizations to promote programs and support to students and d) working with the Retention Initiatives Team (RIT) on outreach to at-risk students.

Every year, approximately 150 first-year students are Liberal Arts Undeclared majors. Undeclared students experience anxiety about not having a major and often doubt whether they should be in college. Academic advising is a major tool for retention of undeclared students. Discover students often need specialized guidance toward areas of academic interest, careers, professional development, and how one discovers a major that is the right fit and require individually-focused advising. Advising with the Discover Team enables students to meet with their assigned Discover academic advisors with a preliminary schedule already filled out, thus creating time for deeper conversations. Throughout the year, this retention specialist also works closely with the RIT on identifying and reaching out to Liberal Arts students at risk of dropping out of college or transferring.

Position Responsibilities: Graduate Fellows in the School of Liberal Arts (SLA) will work closely, on a daily basis, with the Discover Coordinator and the Associate Dean of Liberal Arts. This work includes:

• One-on-one pre-advising with Discover students in the fall and spring terms. This includes academic advising training. Graduate Fellows must have excellent communication and organizational skills and be familiar with Core Requirements, as well as major requirements.

• Organizing and hosting welcome and information sessions for undeclared SLA students, including a large session for all Discover students, Open Houses, and study sessions during midterms and finals in both semesters

• Coordinating advising sessions and student folders with Discover Faculty Advisor, Director of the Discover Program, and appropriate Academic Success Advisor

• Collaborating with the O’Brien Center for Student Success, Honors Program, Compass Program, Phoenix Program, Drive Program, Austin Scholars, and advising specialists from the other schools
