The X-roll® brand characterizes the productfamily of the Hot Rolling Mills and ColdRolling Mills Division. It symbolizes plantsand technical equipment for the economi-cal and flexible production of hot and coldstrip.

PROVEN ACTUATORS

for influencing the roll gap

The increase in demand in the automobileindustry for high-quality cold-rolled striphas triggered a high rate of innovation anddevelopment in the recent past. Conse-quently, more than half of the steel gradesused in automobile construction have beenfurther developed or modified. These newmaterials, such as dual-phase, IF and TRIPsteels, require new and optimized tech-nologies for cold rolling.

According to this development, our plantsallow a considerable expansion of the set-ting range for influencing the roll gap. Forthis purpose, we have further developedour proven actuators CVC® plus, EDC® andESS. CVC® is used for continuous crowncontrol (Continuously Variable Crown),EDC® controls the edge drop (Edge DropControl) and ESS is an Enhanced ShiftingSystem for the rolls.

Further support is provided by our processmodel T-roll®. For optimizing the roll gaplubrication (tribology), exact preliminary cal-culations are possible with regard to tem-perature, rolling force, lubrication behaviorand surface roughness.

We offer our customers state-of-the-artplant technology for cost-efficient produc-tion of high-quality rolling products. Theterm "high-tech rolling" includes all coldrolling technologies where there is a goodbalance between the technical and eco-nomic advantages. The high developmentstatus of our cold rolling mills is only pos-sible because of the close cooperationand partnership with our customers.

CONTINUOUS TANDEM

COLD MILL for fine strip of

In the first construction stage, the tan-dem cold mill produces 2 million tonnesof fine strip made of carbon steel and ofstainless steel grades. The capacity canbe increased to 4,4 million tonnes of carbon steel in the second constructionstage. The rolling width extends to 2,057 mm, in the case of stainless steelto 1,676 mm. The minimum final gaugeis currently 0.3 mm. Provision has beenmade for the option of reducing thisvalue to 0.2 mm in the future.

This is the first plant of its kind world-wide, on which strips of carbon steelsand stainless steel grades are rolled. An outstanding feature of the plant is the high standard of quality of the stripsproduced with variable rolling schedules.Furthermore, the mill stands are fittedwith the most advanced equipment forstrip gauge and flatness control. At favor-able production costs, the plant offershigh flexibility in order to meet the fluc -tuations in demand with regard to mate -rials.

An important highlight is the speed effi-ciency software of SMS Siemag whichensures optimum process control duringcontinuous operation.

SMS Siemag supplied the main produc-tion facilities for the Dongbu, Asan Bayworks. These are: a continuous picklingline/tan-dem cold mill with five millstands of six-high design, one continuoushot-dip galvanizing line as well as onetwo-stand DCR cold rolling mill (DCR =Double Cold Reduction).

The combined pickling line/tandem coldmill is a prime example of the newlydeveloped high-tech mills and isdesigned as endless mill for an annualcapacity of 1.34 million tons. It is able to produce cold strip with a minimumthickness of 0.12 mm.

Hyundai Hysco has been operating a com-bined pickling line/ tandem cold mill whichwas built by us in the former works ofHanbo Steel in Asan Bay, South Korea. As leader of a European consortium, weerected this line ready for operation in1997. As a result of the economic crisis inAsia, however, this plant had not beencommissioned at that time. At the begin-ning of 2006, the plant was overhauledand commissioned by us in co-operationwith Hyundai Hysco.

Nowadays, the plant has an annual pro-duction capacity of 1.55 million t of steelstrip. The range of grades comprises CQ,DQ, DDQ,EDDQ, HSS and HSLA steels.

The minimum strip thickness is 0.25 mm,the maximum strip width is 1,890 mm.The mill is equipped with four four-highstands and one six-high stand, each con-taining CVC® plus.

The mills stands are provided with widthand thickness control systems corre-sponding to the state of the art. Anotherunique feature of the plant is the inlinestrip inspection, facilitating direct qualitycontrol of the rolled stock. The picklingline which is installed upstream isequipped with our approved turbulence-pickling technology, permitting an opti-mum control of the hydrochloric-acid concentration and of the strip tempera -ture during strip treatment.

A NEW PRODUCER

OF COLD STRIP

We have built a new rolling mill on aturnkey basis for VEGA do Sul S.A., acompany managed by the Arcelor Group,in São Francisco do Sul in the South ofBrazil. VEGA is located near the Atlanticharbor of São Francisco. The VEGA complex has been in operation sinceOctober 2003. Since 2008 it operates under the name of ArcelorMittal Vega.The cold rolling mill, we erected as gen-eral contractor, produces sophisticated,high-quality products.

In the first construction stage ArcelorMittal Vega produced 800,000 t/year ofcold strip. In 2009 SMS Siemag was con-tracted with the extension of the picklingline/tandem cold mill. The intentionbehind was a changeover to fully contin-uous operation. For this purpose a drumshear with corresponding pich roll units,a second tension reel as well as theneeded stripleading- and transportationfacilities, including the second coil trans-portation system, was installed in theexit section.

In addition the drive power in the firstmillstand was increased and the mediasystems were modified. By these mea-sures the annual capacity of the mill wasboosted up to 1.4 m tonnes.

Because of the excellent establishmentand market position, ArcelorMittal is plan-ning a further increase of the cold rollingcapacities up to about 2.1 m t/a for theAM Vega facility.

In September 2005 the first cold rollingmill was put into permanent operation at Handan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., HebeiProvince, China. We had received theorder for the combined pickling line/tan-dem cold mill and a skin-pass mill inOctober 2002 in our capacity as consor-tium leader.

The rolling mill is designed for an annualproduction of 1.4 million t of cold strip ofthe most varying material grades. In addi-tion to low-carbon steels (CQ, DQ andDDQ), high-strength steels (HSLA) andsilicon steels can also be processed intofinished products.

The plant consists of a turbulence pick-ling line of the latest generation and afive-stand tandem cold mill with CVC®

plus technology. Also included in thescope of supply are the single-stand high-performance four-high skin-pass mill withthe double expanding head pay-off reelgroup for shortest coil sequence times, a skinpass mill as well as hydraulic sys-tems and the coil conveying system.

A two-strand CSP® facility supplies thehot strip for the new cold rolling mill.The numerous actuators at the five-standtandem cold mill as well as the axiallyshiftable intermediate rolls for CVC® pluscontrol and positive and negative work-roll and intermediate-roll bending make it possible for the owner to attain a highdegree of flexibility and to manufactureproducts of the best quality. Handan thussucceeds in meeting the continuouslygrowing market demands for top cold-strip quality. This combined picklingline/tandem cold mill is one of the mostmodern facilities which we have com-pleted in China in recent times.

Acceptance of the COUPLED

PICKLING LINE/TANDEM

COLD MILL after less than

26 months

On 25 August 2005, the first cold rollingmill was put into permanent operation atBaotou Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., Inner Mon-golia, China. The plant consists of a tur-bulence pickling line of the latest genera-tion coupled with a five-stand tandemcold mill with CVC® plus technology. Thecold rolling mill is designed for an annualcapacity of 1.4 million t of high-gradesteel strips.

It is able to produce strips with minimumthicknesses of 0.25 up to 3.0 mm andwidths up to 1,540 mm. The hot strip forthe new cold rolling mill is produced by aCSP® facility, which was also supplied byus and which was already commissionedin August 2001.

All guarantee values for thickness toler-ances, flatness and off-gauge lengthswere already fulfilled during the produc-tion tests on the tandem cold mill at thebeginning of August 2005 and the guar-anteed production capacity was consid -erably exceeded.

With this investment, Baotou had expand-ed its spectrum of products. By meansof the continuous process chain estab-lished here - from the CSP® plant to thesurface finishing facilities with innovativetechnologies from SMS Siemag - Baotouis able to maintain its market position in the face of the increasing productrequirements of the future.

Expansion of the new

COLD ROLLING COMPLEX

In order to expand its cold strip produc-tion, Wuhan Iron & Steel Group Corpora-tion (Wisco) in Wuhan, Hubei Province,China, placed an order with us in Sep-tember 2003 for the supply of a picklingline combined with a tandem cold mill.

The plants are part of a new cold rollingcomplex which is arranged downstreamof hot strip mill No. 2 also built by us.The first strip was produced in 2005. Thenew complex is designed for the produc-tion of cold-rolled and refined strips ofthe highest quality for the automotiveindustry, for applications in the electricalengineering sector and for the construc-tion industry.

With a rated annual capacity of 2.3 mil-lion t, the pickling line/tandem cold millranks among the most powerful plants ofits type worldwide. Strips widths of 800to 2,080 mm are produced with the bestsurface quality and best flatness.

Severstal Columbus (formerly SeverCorr),USA, had placed a major order with us in the autumn of 2005 for the supply of all production facilities for an integratedworks, ranging from steel production tohot strip, from cold rolling to strip refining.The cold rolling mill consisted of the com-bined five-stand pickling line/tandem coldmill as well as an offline skinpass mill anda hot-dip galvanizing line with an inlineskinpass mill.

In the first expansion stage, the rolling mill was designed for an annual capacityof around 1.2 million t of cold strip. Of this amount, around 0.8 million t wereprocessed further in downstream lines in the cold rolling mill. In the second construction stage, this capacity wasincreased to around 1.8 million t of coldstrip. The tandem cold mill was preparedfrom the very beginning for the expansion.The maximum strip width was 1,830 mm,the minimum thickness 0.3 mm.

The pickling line/tandem cold mill isequipped with our proven turbulence pick-ling technology and five four-high stands.The plant has an inline inspection line toenable the final product to be controlled

during the production process. Theinspection facilities of the “Rotary Inspect”design make it possible to inspect bothsides of the strip easily and in a reliablemanner. The investment costs are low asno additional equipment is required.

In autumn 2005 Baoshan Iron & Steel Co.Ltd., based in the Chinese province ofShanghai, awarded us a contract for thesupply of the combined pickling line/tan-dem cold mill. The new plant was readyfor operation as early as three monthsbefore the agreed date. It has enabledBaosteel to considerably increase its coldstrip production. Commissioning of thefive-stand combined pickling line/tandemcold mill took place in March 2008. This isalready the third pickling line/tandem coldmill which we have supplied to this cus-tomer.

The plant is part of the new cold rollingcomplex No. 5. Its range of productsincludes cold-rolled and refined strip of thehighest quality for the automotive industry,for applications in the electrical engineer-ing sector and for the construction indus-try. The annual capacity is approx. 1.7 mil-lion t of cold strip.

All five stands of the tandem cold millhave the CVC® plus technology. To facili-tate the installation and maintenance ofthe utilities supply systems, the modularcomponents have been put together onone platform. Best possible strip flatnessis achieved through a multi-zone coolingsystem in the last stand, while the patent-ed dry strip system in the exit sectionensures clean and drip-free strip surfaces.

The Tianjin Tiantie Metallurgical GroupCo. Ltd., was founded in 1995. The firmevolved from the Tianjin Steel Factory,which has been in existence since 1969.In spring 2006, Tiantie awarded us a con-tract for the supply of a combined pick-ling line/tandem cold mill.

The plant consists of a turbulence pick-ling line of the latest generation com-bined with a five-stand tandem cold millwith six-high stands in CVC® plus tech-nology as well as numerous otherrenowned high-tech modules fromSMS Siemag.

Our scope of supply included the con-ceptual design as well as the supply ofthe mechanical equipment for the overallplant, manufacturing supervision of localmanufacture as well as supervision oferection and commissioning and the co-ordination of all supplies and servicesof the consortium partners.

The annual production is 1.6 million t of strip made of low-carbon steels, IFsteels and high-strength steels. The stripwidths are between 700 and 1,600 mmand the final thicknesses between 0.25and 2.0 mm.

In order to be able to satisfy future mar-ket requirements, the plant can be addi-tionally equipped with an EDC® systemfor strip-edge-oriented mode of opera-tion, if required. Production was startedin May 2008. In addition to the mainorder, Tiantie awarded us the contract for the supply of an offline skin-pass millin April 2008.

In June 2005 the Shougang Group inWest Beijing, China, placed an order withus as consortium leader for the supply ofa combined high-performance picklingline/tandem cold mill. The annual capacityof the plant is 1.8 million t of cold strip.

Strips of high quality and strength aremanufactured from DP, BH and TRIPsteels, for example for the production ofhigh-grade automotive outer body parts.The pickling line/tandem cold mill wascommissioned in November 2007.

The five-stand tandem cold rolling mill hassix-high mill stands and is equipped withstate-of-the-art technology. It is also pro-vided with our CVC® plus system and ourEdge Drop Control system (EDC®).

The strips are wound with a carrouselreel. Highly powerful suction and filtersystems ensure environmentally friendlyoperation.

The turbulence pickling line of the latestgeneration is also equipped with our triedand tested stretch-bending levelers and anASC trimming shear. With this invest-ment, Shougang intends to expand theproduct range and increase the valueadded. This is a sure sign of progress,consolidating Shougang's market positionin view of the growing future require-ments for various products.

From Posco we have received an orderfor the supply of a fully continuous tan-dem cold mill for stainless steel. The millis intended for the production of coldstrip of the grades ASTM 200, 300 and400. It is designed for an annual produc-tion capacity of 500,000 t. The five-standhigh-performance plant will be the firstfully continuous tandem cold mill world-wide to be exclusively used for rollingstainless steel strip. At the end of 2009the plant went into operation.

In the mill, pickled hot strip with entrythicknesses between 1.8 and 4.0 mm isrolled down to finished cold strip withthicknesses ranging from 0.4 to 2.0 mm.The strip width is 600 to 1,350 mm, themaximum coil weight is 40 t.

HIGH PASS REDUCTIONS.

The core components of the high-techtandem mill are the four roll stands in 18-HS design. Owing to the small work-roll diameters, the mill is able to achieveextremely high pass reductions whichguarantees highly economical productionof 500,000 t of special-steel strip peryear. The slim work rolls are laterally sup-ported to accommodate the high horizon-tal forces. Drive is accomplished via theaxially shiftable intermediate rolls.

OPTIMIZED THROUGH

T-ROLL®.

We used our T-roll® process model todesign the plant and ascertain the opti-mal temperature control of the rollingstock. In this way, suitable cooling andlubricating strategies could be deter-mined ensuring maximum pass reduc-tions at stable roll-gap conditions and limitation of the coiling temperature tomaximum 100 °C.

ENTRY- AND EXIT-END

EQUIPMENT.

The entry area of the continuous tandemmill comprises a payoff reel, a weldingmachine and a horizontal strip accumula-tor. Our supply package for the exit sec-tion included two tension reels with con-tinuous paper feed, a drum-type shearand our inline “Rotary Inspect” stripinspection facility. The carrousel-typepaper dispenser safeguards continuousoperation including automatic paper-coilchanging.

To ensure optimum strip control, the exit section is provided with a patented“Rotary Inspect” inspection line.

In January 2008, the Handan Iron & SteelGroup Han-Bao Company Ltd placed anorder with us as consortium leader for thesupply of a combined pickling line/tandemcold mill. The Handan & Baosteel jointventure is setting up this new cold rollingmill complex on the premises of Handan.

The rolling mill is designed for an annualproduction of 2.1 million t of cold strip ofthe most varying material grades. In addi-tion to low-carbon steels (CQ, DQ andDDQ), high-strength steels (HSS4) canalso be processed into finished products.

The plant consists of a turbulence picklingline of the latest generation and a five-stand tandem cold mill with CVC® plussix-high technology. The numerous actua-tors at the five-stand tandem cold mill aswell as the axially shiftable intermediaterolls for CVC® plus control and positiveand negative work-roll and intermediate-roll bending make it possible for theowner to attain a high degree of flexibilityand to manufacture products of the bestquality.

With the pickling line/tandem cold millsupplied by us, Handan has succeeded inmeeting the continuously growing marketdemands for top-quality cold strip. Thiscombined pickling line/tandem cold mill is one of the most modern facilities whichis being built in China at present.

In April 2008, Shougang Jingtang UnitedIron & Steel Co., Ltd., Caofeidian, HebeiProvince, China, placed an order withSMS Siemag AG as consortium leader forthe supply of a new pickling line/tandemcold mill for an annual production ofapprox. 2.2 million t of cold strip. Oneimportant feature is the production ofhigh-quality grades for the automotiveindustry.

Our scope of supply for this cold rollingmill with a combined pickling line/tandemcold mill comprises the design, supplyand the supervision of commissioning ofthe plant.

- Turbulence pickling line of the latestgeneration with stretch-bending level-er, ASC trimming shear and couplingsection.

FOR HOT AND COLD STRIP

ThyssenKrupp Steel (TKS) regards thesetup of a new works complex for hotand cold strip in the US federal state ofAlabama as a milestone in the develop-ment of the American market. For thispurpose, TKS placed an order with us forthe supply of the hot strip mill, a picklingline/tandem cold mill and numerousprocess lines for strip refining.

With an annual capacity of 2.5 milliontons, the combined pickling line/tandemcold mill (PL-TCM) currently boasts theworld's largest production in this field.The coils arriving from the hot coil storepass through a double payoff reel groupin the entry section of the continuouspickling line/tandem cold mill.

The 800 to 1,870 mm wide strips arethen joined together into an endless strip in a laser welding machine fromSMS Siemag, with this strip being con -tinuously pickled in the turbulence pick-ling line at a process speed of max.270m/min. The turbulence pickling sec-tion with length of 3 x 35 m is controlledby a process model for the most exact-ing surface requirements as well as for easily picklable strips and strips that aredifficult to pickle.

The pickled strip is then reduced on the coupled five-stand four-high tandemcold mill to final gauges of 0.3 to 3 mm.The tandem cold mill is equipped withthe CVC® plus technology and a multi-zone cooling and DS system in the laststand. In the exit section, two coilerswind up the strips. Quality control cantake place during the actual productionprocess thanks to the inline inspectionline “Rotary Inspect”.

Furthermore, we supply auxiliary facilitiessuch as coil conveying equipment, thehydraulic systems, the emulsion systemsand various exhaust systems for main-taining high environmental standards.

The Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Combine(MMK) in Russia has ordered a cold stripcomplex with a combined pickling line/tandem cold mill and facilities for striprefining. This new order includes the sup-ply of all mechanical components and theX-Pact® electrical and automation system.The plants are scheduled to go into oper-ation in 2010.

MMK is one of Russia's leading steelproducers and, by means of this invest-ment, is expanding its production of cold-rolled and galvanized strip to a highstandard of quality. This strip is intendedabove all for the manufacture of automo-tive sheets and motor-car internal partsas well as for the domestic appliance and construction industries.

The cold-rolling stage consists of a com-bined pickling line/tandem cold mill withan annual capacity of approx. 2.1 milliontons. It is equipped with the proven tur-bulence pickling line technology and pos-sesses five four-high stands. The plant is the world’s most powerful combinedpickling line/tandem cold mill, with itshigh drive power ratings of 8 MW and aroll force of 35 MN per stand.

All the stands use the CVC® plus technol-ogy. At the last stand, a multi-zone cool-ing system and the dry-strip system fordrying the strip are additionally installed.The facility is equipped with the “RotaryInspect” inline inspection line to enablequality control to take place during theactual production process.

The entire automation system will be setup in our test facilities beforehand andtested according to the Plug & Work con-cept. Plug & Work simulates the produc-tion sequence and allows the automationfunctions to be tested and optimizedunder realistic conditions prior to instal -lation in the works.

At the beginning of February 2011 JSWSteel Limited issued an order to us forthe supply of a pickling line/tandem coldmill, to be erected at the ToranagalluVidyanagar (Bellary) location in India. The customer was impressed above allby the low drive costs and maintenancecosts of our plant concept.

On the new pickling line/tandem coldmill, JSW Steel Limited will be producingstrips in high-quality steel grades as from2013 and supplying these to the automo-tive industry.

The comprehensive supply scopeincludes the entry section, equipped with two payoff reel groups and with aSMS Siemag laser welder and a tensionleveller. The turbulence-pickling technolo-gy allows optimum descaling with lowconsumption of energy and acid as wellas reduced maintenance and operatingcosts. In addition, an integrated trimmingshear sets the desired strip width andstraightens the strip edges. Altogether,three horizontal strip accumulators areintegrated into the line and ensure con-tinuous strip travel.

All five millstands of the tandem cold millare of six-high design and are equippedwith the new combined CVC® plus / ESStechnology (Enhanced Shifting System).Furthermore, the millstands have beenprepared for Edge Drop Control (EDC®) tobe used later on. EDC® can be retrofittedand ensures a constant strip thickness asfar as the strip edges, enabling the side

trimmings to be minimized and the plantyield enhanced. Perfect flatness makesmulti-zone cooling possible in the finalmillstand. For strip drying a Dry Strip System is installed.

The carrousel reel present in the exitsection of the tandem cold mill allowscontinuous coiling of the strip, which hasbeen rolled down to a minimum finalgauge of 0.3 mm.

We also supply JSW Steel with the auxiliary facilities, comprising coil con -veyor system, coil banding machine,exhaust systems, utility system and aseparate inspection line for monitoringthe strip quality. The carrousel reel hasbeen “set lower”, which provides thecustomer with the option of installing aninline inspection line at a later point inthe future.
