The United Sates Department of State and other authorities have established standards

for rating physical security barriers based on their performance, usually in live crash tests.

For a bollard to be “K-rated” or “M-rated” it must meet the stringent independent testing

standards as set forth by the Department of State and Department of Defense (standard

SD-STD-02.01) or of ASTM-2656, respectively. This rating system determines the ability of

a security barrier to stop a vehicle of a certain weight traveling at a specific rate of speed.

A certified barrier receives one of three K-level ratings: K4 / M30, K8 / M40, or K12 / M50.

To ensure that your perimeter is highly secured, K-rated / ASTM-rated barriers should be

installed to protect against vehicular threats.

THE REDESIGN AND REBIRTH OF TIMES SQUARE PLAZA

Two unique conditions:

1) Because underground utilities and infrastructure prevented the use of conventional installation and engineering methods, shallow footings had to be designed and tested.

2) The perimeter had to allow for access by emergency vehicles, utility and service crews, and special events.

In 2010, the City of New York began the redevelopment of Times Square,

one of the busiest pedestrian areas in the world. The city’s goal was to

improve traffic conditions, control vehicle access, and increase pedestrian

safety. Calpipe Security Bollards (CSB) was tasked to design, engineer

and manufacture fixed and removable bollards to prevent vehicular

terrorist attacks and accidental vehicle incursions.

Just months after the Times Square bollard installation was complete, a

driver intentionally mounted a sidewalk outside the perimeter and struck

several pedestrians as he approached Times Square Plaza. The vehicle

was immediately stopped when it struck the protective bollards, abruptly

putting an end to the rampage. It was a terrible tragedy for New York City,

and local officials credited the bollards with preventing further damage

and injuries.

“We’re very proud that our product stood up to the test, and did what it was designed to do,” said Carlos Gonzalez, CSB’s Department Manager, in an interview with NBC News.
