VladimirVladimirovichPutinwasborninSt.Petersburg,Russia,onOctober7,1952.Hegrewupattendinglocalschoolsandwasinterestedinsports.Heearnedalawdegreein1975andworkedasaKGBintelligenceofficeruntil1990.TheKGBwasthemainsecurityagencyfortheSovietUnionuntil1991.(TheKGBissimilartotheCIAintheUnitedStates.)

In1991,theSovietUnionsplinteredintoseveralEasternEuropeancountries,includingRussia.After,Putinspentafewyearsworkinginlocalpolitics.In1998,hemovedtoMoscowtoworkfornewRussianPresidentBorisYeltsin.Putinwasinchargeofthegovernment'srelationswithitsregionalgovernments.Afterashorttime,Putinbecameheadofthenewsecurityagency,whichwassimilartotheoldKGB.InAugust1999,Yeltsindismissedhiscabinetalongwithhisprimeminister.Putinbecametheprimeminister,whoistheleaderofthecabinet.PresidentOfRussia:1stAnd2ndTerms

InDecember1999,YeltsinresignedaspresidentofRussia.HeappointedPutintoactaspresidentuntilofficialelectionswereheldinMarch2000.Putinwaselectedtohisfirsttermwith53percentofthevote.Hepromisedbothpoliticalandeconomicchanges,andsetaboutrestructuringthegovernmentandlaunchingcriminalinvestigations.

InresponsetotheSeptember2001terroristattacks,PutinannouncedRussia'ssupportfortheUnitedStatesinitsanti-terrorefforts.But,whentheU.S.waronterrorshifteditsfocustoremovingIraqileaderSaddamHussein,Putin,aswellastheGermanandFrenchleaders,opposedtheplan.In2004,Putinwasre-electedtothepresidency.Hecouldnotrunagainin2008becauseoftermlimits.But,Putin'sreplacement,DmitryMedvedev,appointedPutinasRussia'sprimeminister.ThisallowedPutintomaintainapowerfulpositionforfourmoreyears.

OnMarch4,2012,Putinwasre-electedtohisthirdtermaspresident,thoughtherewerewidespreadprotestsandallegationsoffraud.HetookofficeanywayandappointedMedvedevashisprimeminister.

PutinmademorecontroversialchangestoRussia'sdomestic(homecountryissues)affairsandforeignpolicy.InDecember2012,PutinsignedintoalawabanontheU.S.adoptionofRussianchildren,sayingthiswouldmakeiteasierforRussianstoadopttheorphans.However,theadoptionbanspurredinternationalcontroversy.

PutinfurtherstrainedrelationswiththeUnitedStatesthefollowingyearwhenheofferedAmericanEdwardSnowdenprotectioninRussia.SnowdeniswantedbytheUnitedStatesforleakingsecretinformation.RussiaallowedSnowdentoremaininitscountryratherthanfacecriminalchargesintheUnitedStates.

AmidwidespreadpoliticalunrestintheUkrainein2014,PutinsentRussiantroopsintoCrimea,apeninsulainthecountry'snortheastcoastoftheBlackSea.ThepeninsulahadbeenpartofRussiauntil1954.About16,000Russiantroopsinvadedtheterritory.PutindeniedthatRussiawantedtoengageUkraineinwartotakeoverCrimea.AvotewasheldinCrimea,withthemajorityofpeoplevotingtojoinRussiainanelectionmanyfeltwasrigged.Meanwhile,EuropeancountriesandtheUnitedStatesrefusedtoacceptthattheCrimeanpopulationvotedtobeapartofRussia.SyrianAirstrikes
