GARY COMMUNITY SCHOOL CORPORATION SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEES

WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU! The Gary Community School Corporation School Board of Trustees is looking for responsible and committed high school students to represent students’ voices and provide perspective and feedback regarding Board discussions and decisions.

Are you a high school student who is interested in representing the student body at School Board and Committee meetings for the Gary Community School Corporation? If so, being a student representative provides an opportunity for you to be heard!

As a student representative you will be expected to:

1. Attend School Board meeting November, 2014. At minimum you should commit to attending one Board meeting every other month.

2. Attend your assigned Board Committee meeting at minimum once a month. 3. Be prepared for committee and/or school board meetings by reading and studying any required materials. Be

prepared to make at least one (1) presentation of personal experience gained by attending a Board meeting. 4. Inform and/or solicit input from students and be prepared to present information to the Board. 5. Demonstrate leadership skills and scholastic achievements. 6. Know and apply Robert’s Rules of Order. 7. Attend an orientation meeting with parent(s)/guardian on (date to be determined). 8. Complete an application including the following items: (1) a Letter of Interest addressed to the School Board of

Trustees (2) one Letter of Recommendation from principal, teacher or community/church leader and (3) a signed permission slip from parent/guardian.

9. Must have transportation or a commitment from parent(s) to transport you to scheduled meetings. 10. Must have a flexible extra-curricular, work, and social schedule which will permit you to attend meetings.

A total of 14 students will be selected per year as student representatives to the School Board of Trustees. Seven student representatives will be Board members of the Intra-City Student Council and seven students will be selected at-large from area high schools. The student representation calendar ends May 31st of each year.

SCHOOL BOARD COMMITTEES AND MEETING SCHEDULES

Budget/Finance 1st and 3rd Monday at 5:00 p.m. at the Service Center Building/Grounds/Maintenance 1st and 3rd Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. at the Service Center Policy/Legislative Meets quarterly on the 2nd Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at the Service Center Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology 1st and 3rd Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at the Service Center Student and Family Services Meets quarterly on the 4th Thursday at 5:00 p.m. at the Service Center

SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS The School Board meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Gary Career Center. Please Note: A student representative is not a member of the Board, and shall not have voting rights, attend executive sessions, or receive an honorarium.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE APPLICATION Due Wednesday, October 1, 2014 by 3:30 p.m.

Please submit application materials to principal’s office.

Principals are responsible for the submission of all application materials to the Office of Innovation and Improvements. Application should include: § A cover page with first and last name, home address, school name,

grade, principal and date.

§ Letter of Interest (no more than two pages, typed double spaced, 12 point font) addressed to the School Board of Trustees that includes:

a. A summary of your leadership skills, community involvement and scholastic achievements.

b. An explanation of why you would like to serve as a student representative. c. One Letter of Recommendation from your principal, teacher or community/church

leader. d. Signed permission slip from a parent/guardian.

Please note: Student representatives will be selected by the School Board of Trustees based on Letter of Interest and Letter of Recommendation.

OFFICE OF INNOVATION AND IMPROVEMENTS

As stated in Policy 316 “Student Involvement in Decision-Making”, a total of 14 students will be selected per year as Student Representatives to serve on the School Board of Trustees. Seven Student Representatives will be Board members of the Intra-City Student Council and seven students will be selected at-large from area high schools. The Student Board Representatives calendar will begin Fall 2014 (November) through Spring 2015 (May). SCHOOL BOARD REPRESENTATIVE 2014 – 2015 PROCESS

1. In September 2014 information about the application process for serving as a Student Board Representative for the 2014-2015 school year will be sent to high school building Principals, Counselors, and Intra-City Student Council members.

2. Application materials and the due data information for submission will be available in the principal’s office of all high schools.

3. Application materials should be returned to Dr. Albert J. Holmes, Executive Director, Innovation and Improvements/Federal Programs and Grants, from principal’s office on due date.

4. Dr. Holmes will submit applications materials to the School Board of Trustees. 5. School Board members will submit applications materials to the School Board of Trustees. 6. All selected Student Representatives will be notified with a letter from the President of the School Board

of Trustees. 7. Student Representatives will attend an orientation. 8. Student Representatives will receive an Orientation Manual including expectations and school board

committee meeting dates, times, and locations. 9. At the end of the school year, Student Representatives will have a service award recognition.

SCHOOL BOARD STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE EXPECTATIONS

1. Complete an application process by: (A) submitting a Letter of Interest addressed to the School Board of Trustees; (B) provide one Letter of Recommendation from principal, teacher or community/church leader and (C) submit signed permission slip from parent/guardian.

2. Attend an Orientation meeting with parent(s)/guardian. 3. Attend School Board meetings on a rotating basis. 4. Attend selected committee meetings. 5. Be prepared for committee and/or school board meetings by reading and studying any required

materials. 6. Demonstrate leadership skills and scholastic achievement. 7. Inform and/or solicit input from students.
