A meSSAGe from tHe PreSiDentDear McDevitt Family,In the summer of 2019, I wrote to you as the interim President of Bishop McDevitt High School. Honestly, I did not think that I would have the honor of writing to you again in the summer of 2020. Nonetheless, I am blessed to be reaching out to you again, with the purpose of recapping the year, and setting the table for the year to come.

As a beneficiary of a Catholic School upbringing, I have spent the majority of my life in a Catholic school. I remember corporal punishment, and I remember it going away. I remember when there were a few computers in a whole school, now we have a 1:1, student to portable device environment. I remember when Clergy were a large component of our Faculty and Staff. The Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia look much different today than they did when you and I were students. In almost every way, this is a good thing.

Bishop McDevitt is the most diverse school in the Archdiocese. While most schools draw from a handful of neighbor-hoods, McDevitt draws from four separate counties, and two states. Our student body is more reflective of the ‘real world” than any other of our competitors. The traditionally strong academic fabric of our school is indeed emboldened by the social fabric we possess. We offer a plethora of extra curriculars disproportionate to our enrollment. This translates to most students participating in multiple activities, sports, and leadership positions. Every teacher and staff member themselves, serves in at least one additional capacity beyond their “day job,” as a coach, moderator, proctor, or volunteer.

The mission of our academic team is to meet our students where they are and lead them across the finish line. A noble and challenging task indeed. So how did we do this year? Well, 100% of the McDevitt Seniors graduated, and collectively they received over $24,000,000 in college scholarships and awards, shattering last year’s record by $10,000,000. Our formula works, but it is not sustainable in its current format. To grow our campus and student body, we need more resources, funding, teachers, staff, coaches, mentors, volunteers, alumni association members, etc…

Our ability to tackle these challenges is not limited by our resolve; it is not limited by our spirit; and it is not limited by our talent.

Our inability to meet these challenges is limited by the following:

1. Funding

Student tuition does not cover the cost of operation in an academic year at Bishop McDevitt. In this sense our small student population, intimate setting and desirable class sizes, works against us, at least financially.

2. Volunteers Bishop McDevitt’s future is reliant on it’s past. What I mean by this is that besides donations from alumni, we need the tangible assistance of our Alumni. We simply do not have enough staff to grow the campus and the school the way we wish to.

I call upon you to help us sustain and grow this historic institution. In my mind, McDevitt’s future depends on its past. The inspiration, perspiration, and dedication of the McDevitt alumni to come together as Lancers4Life, will be cap-taincy this ship needs to sail for better waters.

I thank you for your time and dedication to your high school. In closing I ask that you find a way of helping, continue to help, or even bring new people into our fold. You are in my daily prayers, and I do humbly ask that you pray for us back on Royal Avenue. Be well, and be safe! Sincerely,
