Herman (Ben) Apple Class of '64 [email protected]

Occupation: Retired Federal Government

Family: Divorced twice. Married to Maureen for 16 years. The third time is a charm.

Interests: Drag racing 65-72 Chevy muscle cars, performing Big Band Jazz, golf & tennis

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Do you know what happens if you didn't attend college in 1965? You got drafted. I started my real world education in the Army. I'm still learning today. I did have a daughter for almost 17 years, but she had a flea problem, as most cats do. When I was not at work, I was pursuing my interest mentioned above. These things were also my therapy. The winter of 1995/1996 finally did me in. I could no longer deal with the SNOW, and I made a vow to move. On the 10th of January, 2004 (6 degrees that early morning) I boarded a plane headed for Arizona. No more snow for me.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Worked as Marketing Coordinator for several notable architectural firms in Northern Virginia. For the past 20 years I have worked for The CNA Corporation, a research organization for the Department of Navy, as Executive Assistant to President and CEO. Jim and I have three grandsons, Nicholas (12), Cameron (6), Brendan (5), and a granddaughter, Caitlin (18 months).

Family: Brother Alan and sister Luanne, both GHS graduates.

Interests: Computers, Amateur Radio, Golf, Plays and Movies, Traveling and Dining out.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: After high school, went to George Mason University for two years. Joined the Air Force and was stationed in Germany for 18 months and Korea for 13 months. After the Air Force, worked at Dow Jones & Company, INC. in Silver Springs, MD. for 9 years, then was transferred to Princeton, NJ for 21 years before retiring. Built a retirement home in Berkeley Springs, WV in 2004 and have lived there ever since with wife Ellen. Worked for 6 years as a reporter for the local newspaper, The Morgan Messenger. Married for 29 years and have one son, Michael, a computer programmer in Oakland, CA.

Family: Married 45 years to Peggy. Son Brian. Daughters Julie, Lisi, Christy.

Interests: Backpacking, kayaking, traveling, leading Sierra Club hikes, work at food bank

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: BA in English from Bucknell Univ; Masters from Arizona State in Ed. Technology. 21 years in the Army. Retired in 1990, then worked in industry in the training business for 16 years. Now fully retired and enjoying the outdoors, travel, and volunteering.

Sarah (Sally) Beavers KariClass of '67 [email protected]

Occupation: Retired in 2010 from NSBA.

Family: Married to Ron Kari Two sons, Jimmy and Michael Coffey. 5 Grandchildren.

Interests: Rescue dogs and cats. Most of the time we keep them.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: First husband Jim Coffey. We lived in Houston, Tx. for 9 years, then got a divorce. The kids and I came to live in Alexandria, VA. Had apt in Belle View and the kids went to Belle View Elementary School, Bryant Intermediate, and Jimmy went to Groveton, before it was closed. The same schools I went to. Worked at National School Boards Association, in Alexandria, VA. 25 Years. Each year went to work the NSBA conference, which was a lot of fun, because I got to travel to cities I would never had the chance to go. Met Ron Kari in Jan. 1990, and we have been together ever since.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Grew up in the same house my entire life until age 22 in the New Alexandria area. Then moved to NC in 1971 and to Florida in 2004. Very hot down here! Miss NC so much!!! Daughter lives in Seattle and miss her. She is an ICU Nero nurse. Proud of her. Hope she moves east before the end of the year. Looking forward to reunion with my sisters!

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: BA Wellesley College, '68, M. Architecture Harvard, '72, Fulbright to Nepal '72-74. Received two National Endowments for the Arts grants to exhibit my Nepal research in LA in '83. Lived, worked, studied, traveled in Asia '70-76. Worked in DC area '76-80. Lived in Los Angeles '81-85; Now live in Ann Arbor, Mi Segued from architecture practice to free lance writing on architecture in '83; became a newspaper columnist for Washington Post, writing about home building in '94; column still runs in Post Real Estate Section. Married at 34 & had 3 daughters relatively late in life. No grandkids yet!

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: After marriage, lived in Davidson, MD & Vienna, VA. Moved back to Groveton in 2004 to live in house I grew up in. Retired from the federal government after 36 years as a IT branch chief. Most of career was spent working for the Army. Adopted a retired racing greyhound and was involved with greyhound rescue for a while and now have 3 little dogs. Enjoy outdoor activities & local history tours. Mostly enjoy being retired and having time to do what I want.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Blessed to be loving life with my high school sweetheart all these years. Love having all my kids and grand kids living nearby in No. VA and spending time with them. Also love traveling to warmer temps in the winter and seeing the world. One of our most memorable trips was touring Israel -- walking in Jesus' footsteps - for 2 1/2 weeks in 2008. It included singing in various venues, chapels, etc. with the National Christian Choir while visiting Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Galilee, Nazareth, Bethlehem, the Dead Sea, and more. Phenomenal experience!

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: United Air Lines Reservationist and Flight Attendant way back in the Old Days before computers!!! (My claim to fame).Married & Divorced Mac Page, GHS '63. Married Tony Bicknell '03, Widowed 2/17/14. Still not over that!Tony and I moved to the Jacksonville area in '07 and it was great. Can't afford to move back to the DC area, and the traffic, the cold weather and the politics! So I guess I just have to put up with the Florida sunshine and perfectly warm weather and very mild winters!

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Followed my Dad's trail of flying. 42+ yr. career. I flew most everything from taildragger Twin Beeches and DC-3's to Boeing 747's. Majority of time with Non-Sched Carriers that flew for all agencies of govt. (yes, including CIA) 71 missions in Desert Storm won a couple of Air Medals for some of it. Married a beautiful German former flight attendant with Pan Am. She is a CPA and we now run a full accounting firm in Vero Beach, FL.

Charlotte (Charlie) Brown Class of '67 [email protected]

Family: Parents built out home on Collard St and I have one younger sister, Bonnie.

Interests: Genealogy and history.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Lived on Collard Street in Groveton since 1952. Attended the 3rd Groveton school on West Oak St (now Memorial), Bryant Intermediate on Quander Rd (now West Potomac High School), and of course Groveton High School on Popkins Lane. Worked for the U.S. Army in the IT field and retired from the Securities and Exchange Commission as IT manager/supervisor. Interests continue with family genealogy and our church, St. Mark's Episcopal Church, history. Wrote the history of Groveton entitled "Images of America: Groveton". LOVE LOVE LOVE Retirement.

Christine (Chris) Burney Class of '64 [email protected]

Occupation: retired!

Family: Two sons; three grandchildren. All live in the Phoenix area.

Interests: I volunteer at many artistic places. I also like to hike, do yoga and tai chi.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: After graduating from The College of William and Mary, I was married. My degree was in Elementary Education. I have lived in Boston, Mass; Allentown, Pennsylvania; Niles, Michigan; Memphis, Tenn; and now in Phoenix, AZ. In Phoenix I became single again. My two sons and I have been in Arizona for 36 years. Not in my wildest dreams did I think I would live in the west. I have taught 1st and 2nd grade; then after the children were older, I moved up to middle school and taught advanced math courses. I have now retired from teaching. I got adopted and changed my last name to BLUNT.

Family: Married. "We" (linda and I) have 4 children and 8 grandchildren ages 16 to 4.

Interests: Mostly sports; primarily golf (the old age sport)

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: US Marine Corps (Buddies with Bob Lisicki). U. of MD - BS; U of Northern CO - grad (No degree). Married Barb Ernst - divorced in 1974 - two Daughters. Worked on Capital Hill for Congressman (compliments of Peter Stephens dad!). Real Estate for Feds in DC, Colorado, San Francisco. Opened my real estate development firm in 1984. Developments in Western US (Built a small Casino/Micro-Brewery in Las Vegas!) Moved from San Francisco to Napa in 1997. Enjoying life in a nice place - part owner of Luna Winery and Stonehouse Olive Oil Co. Still competing in some golf events. BS alot.

Family: I don't have children of my own but I have a step son and step daughter

Interests: I enjoy playing Golf, Bridge and Gardening

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: I have been a boater and RV'er. I live on the water in Aquia Harbour in Stafford. I'm a snow bird and spend my winters in Port St. Lucie FL. I am a widow but have many friends that keep me busy.My Mom is still alive at the age of 96 and I am with her several times a week in the Mt Vernon area not far from Popkins Lane.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Graduated from James Madison University in 1972. Majored in Biology. Worked as. Lab tech at Woodard Research, 72-74. Worked at WSSC 74-86 as lab tech., Microbiologist and Chemist. Worked for Prince George's County Government as a Stormwater Planner, Section Head, and later as an Associate Director for Waste Management, 1987-2013. Have stayed in touch with Sharon Vaughn Torres, Nancy Moran Gill, and Janet McConnaughey. Lost Diane DiMartino in 2006.

Family: Three children, 1 son & 2 daughters, and 7 grandchildren

Interests: My grandchildren, ranging in age from 10 months to 15 years old.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: I have been a stay-at-home mother, an aerobics instructor and retired two years ago from Rolls-Royce. I volunteer for Wolf Trap, Ford's Theatre and Meals-on-Wheels. Currently I work part-time for Saab Aircraft which gives me the flexibility and money to travel frequently.

Interests: ATV Riding / Trap & Clay shooting. Traveling. Grandkids.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Married to Margie 49 wonderful years. One son & two Grandkids. I was suppose to graduate in 1962, but I quit school and got a job. Went to night school while working so I could graduate with Margie.

Family: 2 beautiful daughters, Kathy and Debbie and 4 wonderful grandkids.

Interests: Traveling, watching sports, most of all being with family and friends.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Retired after 28 years with Department of Interior 3 years ago and have enjoyed cruising to northern Europe and also the Mediterranean. I have lived most of my life in Northern Va but have lived in Florida, WVa, Colorado and Minnesota.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Married Paul in 1970 and had Christopher in 1975 and Dan in 1978. I have lived in Sturbridge, MA since 1973. We had sailboats and a Grand Banks trawler and spent a lot of time cruising the New Eng. Islands and seacoast before Paul's death in 1994. We were active in the community and with the boys and grandkid's sports. It has been a very happy life.

Family: Married since Feb 1967. Have a son, a daughter, 1 grandson & 1 granddaughter

Interests: My family, reading, studying ancestory & enjoying retirement.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: I worked for the Army and then started working in the school system when my children started school. My husband transferred to a FL engineering company in 1993 and I started working in the computer department of the Broward County FL Public Schools. After retirement we took a 3 week vacation to Alaska & visited my son in Maui.

Joanne (Jo Jo) Goodspeed EndresClass of '66 [email protected]

Family: Mel (spouse), Turk (dog), Arlene Lantz, Sharon Hammang & Laura Walker (sisters)

Interests: Good books, dancing, boating/kayaking, our koi pond, and traveling in our RV.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: I went to Washington School for Secretaries, and subsequently held secretarial and administrative assistant positions thru 1996. I freelanced in desk top publishing thru 2009 and then quit working. Mel and I have been married for 44 years. We never had any kids ~ only dogs ~ 'cause we're both big kids. We've skydived, scuba dived, flown paraplanes, parasailed, motorcycled, white-water rafted, and ridden the most outrageous roller coasters; we both have private pilot licenses; and we built our own home.

Interests: Florida GATORS athletics; living in Gainesvillle; playing bridge; my church.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Married Joe Benedik, Sr. 1964, Divorced 1979=2 wonderful children, 4 athletic and bright grandchildren. Began nursing-Patuxant River Naval Air Station 1983; Moved to Gainesville, FL 1985 to continue nursing; Retired on disability in 1998. Am very happy in my house with my yard and plants and flowers.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Graduated Duke in 1968. Three years in Army. Graduated GW Law School in 1975. Clerked on US Tax Court 1975-1977. Joined Baker & McKenzie law firm and elected partner in 1984. Left firm to set up sole tax practice in 1996. Specialty is nonprofit organizations including colleges and universities. Published The Tax Law of Colleges and Universities in 1996 and currently in 5th edition. Recently moved office to home and loving it.

Barbara (Barb) Hawkins KempfClass of '66 [email protected]

Occupation: Retired fitness instructor/volunteer

Family: Husband Steve, Daughter Kathy, granddaughter Katie

Interests: Travel, reading, Zumba and just having fun.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: I had the honor of being an Army wife which led to many opportunities for travel and meeting and making life long friends. We are now retired and living in Leavenworth, KS. Daughter and granddaughter live close by which is wonderful. We continue to travel and enjoy life.

Family: Divorced, 3 kids (1 lawyer 2 with Their Masters). Girlfriend Diane.

Interests: We go to a lot of live music. Small venues mostly. Travel in western states.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Left Groveton after 10th grade for Ohio, drafted then graduated from Ohio State. Taught school for 2 years then to Aspen for 2 more as a ski bum. Then to Seattle, Boeing and marriage. 26 years of both and retired. Worked 6 years selling industrial chemicals. Kids in Wa, NC & Ireland all doing well. Work had me travel the world including lots the Alexandria area where I found a couple of you. Hoping to see more.

Janise Hardy HawkinsClass of '64 [email protected]

Occupation: showroom manager Next Day Blinds

Family: I have two sons, one grandson, and two grandaughters

Interests: I enjoy reading, crafts, simple gardening, and spectator sports.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: After Groveton, I graduated from William and Mary. I married a few years later and lived in Cleveland, San Diego, Key West, and Manassas, Va. I have 2 sons. The older one lives in Charlotte, N.C. with his wife and nearly 5 year old daughter. The younger one lives in Gainesville, Va. with his wife, 5 year old son, and 2 1/2 year old daughter. I have a chance to spend a good bit of time with those two since they are closer. I moved to Strasburg, Va. about 8 years ago when my job location changed to Winchester. It changed again to Leesburg but I am still here.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Retired from a Bell System company. Operated an Interconnect telephone company and sold to BellAtlanticom. Operated a Consulting company until 2001 and sold to retire permanently.

Gordon Horwitz Class of '64 [email protected]

Occupation: Accountant now retired

Family: I have been married to my first wife for 45+ years.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: I became neither rich nor famous, but I survived the free-love 60’s, lived through the inflationary 70's, the Reagan 80’s, the Clinton prosperity of the 90’s, and Bush’s war and recessions, to retirement. Life is now all sweetness and honey.

Jane Henderson JonesClass of '68 [email protected]

Occupation: Educational and Fitness Blogger

Family: I have a married daughter, Katie Kraig, CPA and am care- giver to my mom.

Interests: Fitness and education research and blogging about best practices.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Loved being an educator for 37 years in multiple grade levels and subjects. Adjunct professor for ODU at Fort Belvoir program "Troops to Teachers". Happy to find ways to fight the diseases of aging with exercise and to be able to blog about it. No more osteoporosis for me at all and I've set up web site for charity donations to major health organizations with research about fitness program, www.jjcombosize.com - it's a work in progress.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: After graduation went to work as a Public Health Sanitarian for State of Virginia in Fairfax County Health Department. Retired in 2006 from the position of Director of Environmental Health for Fairfax County. Since retiring we have developed interest in camping (really glamping) and in working with Therapy Dogs. We have Toby our registered Therapy Dog and visit many facilities in Greenville South Carolina, where we now reside. I am a tester observer for Therapy Dogs Inc. Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Most 1964 Groveton classmates will not remember Susie Jones; there's not even a freshman class photo of her in the 1961 Tigerama. Leaving Groveton High School after my freshman year was a traumatic experience, and I distinctly remember crying all the way from Virginia to Ohio (perhaps not so fond a memory, but a memorable life experience just the same). Upon graduation, received a BS in Elementary Education from Ohio University in 1967. After raising a family, I received a Masters Degree in Reading Education in 2004 and a Doctoral Degree in Reading and Language Arts in 2007.

My absolute joy is spending time with my grandchildren, Alexis, 17, Ally, 14, Conor, 11, and Thomas, 7. Love taking trips with friends for stitching retreats (one being Carol Walkup (Lassiter), and leisure travel. Best trip ever was to Alaska. I came home in late 67, somehow convinced Jennifer Simons (class of 66) to marry me and became the father of two daughters. Aside from short moves to Florida and Ohio, we have stayed local and enjoy the Alexandria area. I graduated from GWU and pursued a financial career with Marriott and Thrifty Car Rental as a CFO. Running numerous road races, 8 marathons and a 50 mile race caught up to me and I had a double hip replacement one day. Was up and walking the next day (with help).

Belong to two Red Hat chapters, five MeetUp groups, and local gym where I take yoga classes and swim. One of my favorite things to do is go out to the airport and join a group that is welcoming home a soldier/hero from deployment. It's the least I can do for their service to our country.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: I always thought the boys in the class of '64 were cute, but I never thought I would marry one. Pete Lafley and I began our adventure in1969 and are still going strong through all of life's uncertainties. We have two daughters and one granddaughter that we dote on. I worked in media and communications and had the fortunate opportunity to be a reporter for the local paper, work the press desk at Cape Canaveral and the sad duty of working at the media tent at the Pentagon after 9-11. I retired two months ago, and went to our little place in northern Vermont to shake off the workaday world.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: I have lived in San Diego, CA since Aug 1986 and have worked for the U.S. Marshals Service as the Administrative Officer. I live in Poway which is 23 miles north of San Diego and have a beautiful home with one acre on top of a hill overlooking the City of Poway. I have 2 gorgeous dogs, Scooby-Doo, a mixed yellow lab/great dane, and Rex, a mixed german short hair pointer/greyhound. The dogs weigh 110 lbs each. I am still single.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Work Career: 39 years at the Pentagon, worked hard saw it all ! Loving the freedom of retirement, daughter Colette expecting third baby girl at Thanksgiving. Currently have apartment in Old Town Alexandria and house in the Outer Banks.

Occupation: Retired from US Postal Service

Family: Married with 2 children.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Served in the USAF for six years and then did four years with the Texas Air National Guard full time. Having married a military man we lived in California, Alaska, Arizona, Texas, Germany and Maryland. Retired in 2012 with over 34 years of Government service.

Occupation: Surgical Scheduler

Interests: I like to read & watch old westerns on TV shows.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: I retired from Alexandria Hospital after a 36 year career there. I stayed retired 6 months and am now in my second career this time with Kaiser. I still live in Alexandria. At least once a year Nancy Moran Gill & Beverly Coley Warfield get together for a girls weekend! The best thing that has happened to me in the last three years is the birth of my grandson Larson (3) & granddaughter Piper (21 months).

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Worked in Silicon Valley as a Electro-Mech engineer and came back to the East Coast to retire where my family is now. I am a Realtor on the Eastern Shore of MD. Working on older cars is my hobbie.

Douglas (Doug) Varner Class of '64 [email protected]

Family: Married 12 1/2 years to Diamond, the jewel of my life.

Interests: Hiking, bike riding, travel, hunting, wildlife conservation, music, reading.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: I went on to Frederick College and graduated from JMU in 1969. Work experience includes fields as diverse as advertising, import auto repair, and a 30 career with Xerox Corp, from which I retired in 2008. I was associated with the Boxwood Theater in Alexandria, and still play my flute, mostly in church. I was privileged to go on hunting safaris in Zimbabwe in 1999 and 2000. We visited Korea in 2003, Diamond's first return to her home country in eighteen years. I love high school and college reunions.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Own Metro Sealant and Waterproofing Supply, Inc. - headquartered in Springfield, VA with branches in Baltimore and Richmond. Memorable Experiences: Climbed Everest twice (never sumitted but reached base camp and beyond). Sumitted Kilimanjaro. Cycled across Iowa in the RAGBRAI. Bicycling tours in Red Rock Canyon, White Rock Canyon and Alaska.

Virginia (Ginnie) Wallace Class of '64 [email protected]

Family: brother Howard, sister Val (both went to Groveton), mother Adelita

Interests: art and architecture, music -especially jazz, latin, and opera, birding

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: University of Michigan, BA in Art History '68. I worked at the National Gallery of Art in education and in the press office until '72. Then my sister and I traveled cross country, visiting parks and working odd jobs, arriving in San Diego in '73. I continued traveling in the West, then went back to school, and worked at several graphics jobs until 2010. At that time, I retired and moved back to Virginia to live in our family home with my mom.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: After graduation went into the Marine Corps - 65-67, and then worked for the Washington Gas Company. In 71, I moved to California with fellow classmate Eugene Janeli. In 1980 I moved to Durango, CO and now live in Cortez. I have crossed the country hundreds of times and have ridden my motorcycle in most of the states as well. I like traveling and keeping up with former classmates when I am on the road.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: Member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. I spent 45 years as a physical therapist, primarily in critical care, and was given the opportunity to instruct PT students in the care of cardiopulmonary patients. At home, I have been blessed with a wonderful family, including a wonderful son-in-law and grandchildren. I was blessed in my career by the opportunity to work with the first intensivist in Ohio, who wanted physical therapy active in critical care.

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: BA (Music), American University. Career was real estate related -- rehab of old houses & employment in the commercial sector (leasing, later working for developers). Last employment was in the Silicon Valley w/the subsidiary of a Japanese high tech company. Memorable now is being retired & spending more time w/my Boston & DC grandkids & their parents. (BTW, since marriage in 1967, I've been known as Lori Coile, but I remember being Lorraine White.)

Occupation: Retired Navy Pilot

Family: Married for 45 years. Two children, five grandchildren in Minneapolis area.

Interests: Aviation, Tennis, RVing, Volunteering

Biography / Memorable Life Experiences: College in Texas. Married in 1969. Wife (Sherry) is a nurse. Entered the Navy's flight program and became a Naval Aviator in 1971- deployed on several aircraft carriers. After the Navy worked mostly sales and marketing positions in several technical businesses. Retired in 2006 and moved to Englewood, FL but spend summers in Minneapolis to see kids and grandkids.
