Susquehanna University’s Choral Institute is a unique
summer performance experience for high school students.
This week-long residential program focuses on improving
students’ musicianship, vocal technique and choral
performance skills.

• Sing in the institute choir conducted by Dr. Julia Thorn and Dr. Jason Vodicka.
• Take classes in music theory, conducting, diction and voice science.
• Receive group vocal instruction from Susquehanna University voice faculty.
• Hear performances by Susquehanna students and faculty.
• Participate in the closing concert in Stretansky Concert Hall.
• Experience a week in the life of a Susquehanna music student.
WHO MAY APPLY
High school students entering grades 9–12 in the fall of 2015 are invited to apply. Selection is based on a letter of recommendation from your choral director, voice teacher, pastor or counselor.
COMPREHENSIVE fEES
$560 If online application is completed on or before May 1.
$660 If online application is completed after May 1.
A limited number of scholarships are available. Students must apply by May 1 to receive consideration for these discounts.

Judy White Adjunct Professor of Voice
Jason D. Vodicka, D.M.A. Institute Director Jason Vodicka is coordinator of music education and director of the University Chorale at Susquehanna University. He is also music director of the Harrisburg Choral Society, a community ensemble in existence since 1895.Prior to his appointment at Susquehanna, Dr. Vodicka conducted the UGA Women’s Glee Club and the UGA Opera Ensemble while studying at the University of Georgia. His research on empowerment and engagement in the choral rehearsal has been presented at Westminster Choir College, Florida International University, The
University of Georgia, and the Lund (Sweden) International Choral Festival.For nine years, Dr. Vodicka was one of three choral directors at Pennsbury High School in Bucks County, Pa. During his tenure, the Pennsbury choirs sang in such venues as Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in New York City, traveled internationally on five occasions, and received invitations to perform at both the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association In-Service Conference and at the American Choral Directors Association Eastern Division Conference.Dr. Vodicka is in increasing demand as a clinician. This season he will conduct the PMEA District 11 Chorus, the Central Dauphin High School Honor Choir and the Dauphin County Music Educators Association Middle School Chorus.
Julia Brasher Thorn, D.M.A. Director of Choral Activities Julia Thorn is a multifaceted musician with choral conducting, voice and music education as areas of specialization. She has trained under the batons of many of the world’s finest conductors, including Robert Shaw, Brock McElheran and Eugene Ormandy. In 2004, she was selected to conduct with Helmuth Rilling at the internationally acclaimed Oregon Bach Festival.While pursuing her doctorate under the direction of Sandra Willetts, Thorn taught in the choral and music education departments at the University of Alabama and served as director of choral activities at the University of
West Alabama. As choral director and elementary music specialist in Dekalb County Schools, Decatur, Ga., her choirs consistently received superior festival ratings. Dr. Thorn comes to Susquehanna after 15 years as professor of music at Centenary College where she was honored as the Outstanding Teacher of the 2008–09 academic year. Thorn performs frequently as a guest conductor and is an active clinician and adjudicator. Choral ensembles under her direction have given critically acclaimed performances at national, divisional and state conferences of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the National Association for Music Education and the National Collegiate Chorus Organization.
